I was on my way home, and saw a mangled body on the side of the road. He had been on a bicycle, but that was about 6 feet away from him. There was no blood, but it was still bad. The ambulance was just pulling up as I was driving by. It had to be a hit and run because there was nothing else around, just him and the bicycle.

I don't understand how people can do that, and just drive away. I don't think I will ever be able to get that image out of my mind. I will always be wondering if he was dead, or just unconscious. Did he survive? I bet he never saw it coming.

About 20 years ago, right across the street from where I was standing, I saw a motorcyclist merge in front of a car that had to have been going twice the limit. I'll never forget after that, the way the bike and the guy were slammed to the ground, there was no way he could survive. The car sped off. It was so strange when the ambulance arrived, they were just standing around, in no hurry. I remember being sad as they took the body and swept what was left of the motorcycle off the road. An hour later, you'd never know there was an accident.

I still can remember the second the poor guy got hit, how quickly he was slammed to the street. A few months later I saw a car stop and a bleeding body was thrown out. That was gory, but still not as bad as the hit-and-run.

Edit: as far as how people could leave, I think the whole thing happens so quickly, the driver might freak and speed off. The accident I saw had multiple witnesses, who all gave different descriptions of the car!

Sorry you saw that, Vicki. Hard to believe that a driver could just take off after hitting someone. I got hit by a car about 15 years ago. Hit and run driver. No serious injuries, but I was unconscious for over an hour. I would have loved to know who the son of a bitch was who hit me and just kept driving.

I was also hit by a car while riding my bike. That guy, after launching me (with the bike between my legs) 20 feet into the highway, also took off. I still have a scar from where his hood ornament went into my thigh. It was two weeks before my wedding.

I also remember watching a car flip in front of me on the highway. Everyone but me drove on. I'll never forget approaching the car and seeing the hysterical and bloody woman inside. What I thought I could do to help (in my high heels and suit), I'm not sure.... Thankfully, shortly afterwards some truckers stopped and got her out.

I think fear and the desire to not "be involved" makes a lot of people do a lot of crazy things. Leaving the scene of an accident is one of them.

There was a study done after the Kitty Genovese incident in NYC. Dozens of people watched while this woman was brutally stabbed. The study showed that most people wanted to help but assumed that someone else already was. The study also indicated that if one person starts helping other people will then jump in and offer assistance. We humans after all are social creatures.
