Except often there is no way to tell if a product is grey market.
You have to do your homework. If the product costs enough, and is complicated enough to make warranty coverage an issue, it's up to the buyer to make sure it has a warranty that's valid in the country where it's purchased. The manufacturer also has to be on the level. Wicked Roots advertises a warranty on their Super Vapezilla, but it's only labor. Last time I checked they didn't cover parts at all, and the part most likely to go, the digital controller, costs $200-250. In effect, they're selling a $500+ vape that has no warranty.

O&B allowed anyone and everyone to sell their iolite, then discovered they had a real mess when the design proved to be less reliable than they'd hoped, and many people were seeking warranty repair. I assume a lot of them bought from eBay sellers or local shops. I know the company was surprised to find that many US shops were not willing to be involved in the warranty process. Apparently it's much different overseas, and local resellers are obligated to provide service.

At any rate, changing their warranty terms in midstream left many buyers up the creek without a paddle. It's an unfortunate situation, and hopefully the company is taking steps to restrict distribution to authorized resellers. Luckily, if you shop around, you can now get an iolite for $150 or less-quite a bit better than the original price of $250.

Here in the States, the retailer assumes the liability of warrantee if they are grey market. Apparently the grey market dealers have been effective telling customers to call the manufacturer. The consumer can contact ebay, or their credit card company to put pressure on the grey market.

O&B are working through a backlog of authorised reseller applications, so you should see more images like this one out on the net soon. They consider eBay to be the grey market, so unless you see this image when dealing with a local seller I would avoid them:

Interesting how they spell over there. Hopefully they'll put the dealer list on their website. Anyone can cut and paste a logo.

True 'dat. I would think if they really wanted to hammer the point home, they should have a list of dealers on their site and point out that if not purchased from an authorized dealer, warranty work will not be covered.

But aside from the stem issue (breaking) I haven't had any problems with my Iolite in almost a year of use... knock on wood, but to me that says good quality. I use high quality butane, handle it well (no dropping on the floor) and clean it every so often when it gets dirty. I think there will always be some percentage that need warranty repair, but for some people the price they save may be worth going into the grey market if they think they wont need warranty service.

Anyway, just $0.02. To anyone looking to get one, it is a great portable unit!

Can anybody help me out with my Iolite. I put in quality, Vector, butane and i dont hear the "hissing" of butane flowing after turning it on. And if i do it goes away after pressing the ignitor button. I even vented it and refilled it after that and still no dice. :( Any suggestions to my problem?

Try venting it like 3-4 times back to back without turning it on, when you vent it make sure you vent it until you hear no more air coming out, if you have a new can of vector use that to refill it rather than an older can, and let it sit for 5 minutes before turning it on. If it doesn't start hissing instantly after you turn it on, then let it sit in the 1 position and wait for a couple of minutes to see if it turns on.

First post on here! Just thought I'd start out by saying how in love I am with my Iolite. I've had it for a few months now and feel like I love it like I loved my teddy bear when I was little. I did have a question though. I'm having some trouble cleaning it. I have the newer model where the pin doesn't come out, which doesn't seem to be much of an issue because that part of the chamber seems to still be clean. I've read what's suppposed to happen to clean it, but mine is having some trouble, or maybe just the user :) I am unable to unscrew the mouthpiece. It will keep turning but it wont unattach. The bowl and mouthpiece seem to be connected. I can push the bowl part up, and spin it around, but it won't come off so I can clean the screen. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if it's just stuck. Has anyone else had this issue?

Attach the bowl to the rest of the iolite, as if you were going to use it, and you should be able to unscrew the mouthpiece. Hope that makes sense.

Heat the iolite up before trying to unscrew the mothpiece from the bowl. It should only need to run two cycles before it will unscrew a lot easier.

Alright so this is my first post here. I'm a regular poster over on tc, but figured you guys would have a better vaporization specific discussion over here.
I've pretty much decided to pick up an iolite, my friend had just grabbed one as well today.
Before I had really gotten a chance to play with one, I had been hoping you could easily pack concentrates, specifically BHO and other oils like it. Looking at it in person and how the bowl works, I'm a little iffy on how it would be possible now.
So, I was wondering if any of you guys have some experience with concentrates out of your iolite? Pretty set on getting one either way but this would make things 100x better. Thanks a ton for any feedback.

They'll work reasonably ok, but you'll end up with a fair bit of residue staining and you won't get it all in one hit like with Ti. Others on TGR have recommended wiping BHO and hash on papers then loading them into the bowl.

Hmm that might be something to try. Thanks for the tip. And trust me I have my fair share of oil pieces, this was more of a convenient way to do it on the go.

hey guys i just have a couple questions about my new iolite. im just confused as to what is the moisture condensor. i read that i should take that out but i dont know what it is? is it the mesh where you put the herbs on? also ru supposed to take the mesh out too? i just did that but now theres nothing stopping the herbs from getting sucked into my mouth when i inhale. and now i cant figure out how to put it back on? another thing, how do you guys clean ur iolite? i just put some rubbing alcohol on it to clean but im afraid it could rust? thanks.

okay can someone help me cause im starting to think my iolite is defective. ive been using this butane called madelaine cause my local headshop said its good and its near zero impurities so i dont think this is the prob. ive been smelling this strong gaseous odor coming out of the side vents wen the iolite heats up and theres no way that stuff is good for u to inhale. its smells like im at a gas station. is this normal? also ive noticed its been eating up my butane like alot. ill pour some in to full capacity flick the switch but it wont ignite and i hear hising noises for like 10 seconds and then shuts off. then i have to fill it back again like half way cause it already ate that much butane in that short time periiod. thers no way this is normal. can somone help

It's to reduce heat when using herb that isn't really dry. You can use it or not, as you like.

If your unit is releasing butane anywhere then it's defective.

The mesh isn't the moisture condensor - it's a small cylindrical metal piece that fits inside the mouthpiece stem. Pull it apart and if it's not there it'll be in the bag with your spares. The 7 hole mesh screen fits in the bowl with the screen facing out, followed by the spring washer to hold it in.

I've never heard rumbling but there is a bit of a "rattle" if you shake it - it's normal. The exhaust has a definite odour - it will affect the flavour of your herb so get into the habit of not inhaling while the unit is heating - only inhale while it's quiet and stop if it starts another cycle. You should get a good 20-30 second long, slow inhalation between heating cycles.

After filling are you turning it on straight away? If so leave it for 5 mins so the butane converts back to liquid form and the valve area is no longer cold to the touch.

Hope that helps!

okay thanks for answering all my questions but is my unit really defective if its releasing butane fumes out of the side vents? i already used it like a couple days ago nd i didnt inhale any fumes but i def breathed some in. is this bad for me in any way? i feel like iolite lied to me cause they said there would be no butane fumes at all. i still feel weird even now like i messed somethign up in my brain cause of the butane. my sense of touch and feeling is really weird wen i like touch my face or scratch my arm. maby im imagining it? i dont think so though. idk. actually can anyone comment on this cause i dont even know what butane smells like and i didnt actually see any fumes i just smelt like a gaseous smell. is this normal?

How is that possible if you've ever reloaded the thing??? When you fill the iolite, you smell the Butane... If you keep smelling raw Butane, I'd say you have an issue

okay i just reloaded my iolite with butane and wen i overfilled it a tiny bit i took a quick smell of the stuff that sprayed out. it didnt really have a smell other than it being cold and kind of like an icy smell. hard to explain. it didnt smell like the exhaust during heat up but that still smells like a warm gaseous odor. idk if any of that makes sense but thas what im smelling. please help im afraid to use my iolite again in fear of inaling butane and dying.

It is impossible to answer your question on a forum. Some brands of butane have added chemicals to create an odour. The odour may or may not still be present in the exhaust. The catalytic reaction converts the butane completely 2C4H10 + 13O2 -> 8CO2 + 10H2O. Any smell in the exhaust is no indicator of whether butane is present in it.

A slight odour in the exhaust is normal from my experience using many different iolites.
