For those unaware, virtual reality is becoming reality in a big way this year.Besides the occulous rift, PlayStation will also have a set coming out this year. I like horror games but also a good adventure game. But what if I get a game and literally just want to live in this fake world? What if my own world becomes so boring in comparison that I spend most of my time in this virtual world Concerned for this, what should I do?

Honestly man? That's pretty pathetic....sorry if I offend, but cmon....you cant possibly have THAT shitty of a REAL life that a VR world is better. Same goes to people who trip all the time to escape reality. We can't escape reality, but we can make our own reality better. Good luck dude...I'd say just stay away from the VR shit...you already have confirmed you may be too weak to handle it properly.

Wasn't there a Star Trek episode or two (or three) about holo-addicition?

Honestly VR is fun, but it's far from *real*. I'm sure in the near future there will be those who use it as a vice. Like with all things - gaming/drinking/smoking/eating/exercising/etc - someone will use it as an 'escape' from reality.

VR has a long way to go before you can ever fully immerse yourself, mainly because of that big fat tether cable behind the VR helmets of today.

The Samsung Gear VR2 however is awesome (I love mine), but it drains my phone's battery faster than you can imagine (literally could fry an egg on the back of my phone after 15 minutes with some VR apps on the Gear VR!). And the resolution of the Samsung S6 (and now S7) is still far too low for a true experience (major screen-door effect)

That said..... the Gear VR does have it's benefits.....

in a virtual reality world, you could live out your dreams. You could walk on the moon and then have chai with Master Yoda. Or, you could sail the seas as a pirate. Imagine the possibilities here.

Herb gardener...
I'd like to get high and walk around in avatar world with all the funky plants and trippy stuff...

But will never compare to real life nature...

I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too
Gaming is so life draining I think this is already the case.

Most of my 'friends' alrealy spend more of there waking day playing or discussing FIFA or COD.

As for VR, I think simulation experiences is where it will shine.

Exploring space, deep sea all whist sitting on the loo like @Ratchett s quality image.

Just remember they have been trying (and failing) to sell this tech for almost 20 years.

Until VR effects our sense of touch it's not dangerous.
Once you can log into VR and get a blowjob that's when you're going to see it having a huge impact on society.

Gaming is so social these days it's no different than sitting around a living room chatting with friends if you can do that in VR too.

Naughty America is already working on a lot of this  - http://mashable.com/2016/01/08/naughty-america-vr-porn-experience/ and while I can't find the link now, there are some other sexual internet connected devices on the market ("Teledonics" comes to mind??)

It's only a matter of time before the two are combined

being lost in your own thoughts is the original VR to me and i think many battle with this in terms of "living in the now" vs "im sorry, what did you say?". with an externally derived VR you can always just turn it off so it comes down to self control and time management. if you like it better than the "real world" who's to say you should do anything about it?

At this rate I'll be getting virtually high soon, if it can stimulate my endocannabinoid system I'll buy one, or would I????

Rats were implanted with electrodes and given a switch to pleasurably stimulate their brains.
They lived the rest of their lives by the switch and soon died of starvation.

If you're living in a VR your physical body doesn't cease to exist.. Unless you're going to be able to take care of your basics like eating, drinking, sleeping, and taking a piss/shit in virtual reality I would say this is a long shot "what if" question..
With that being said, anyone that likes virtual reality that much isn't going to survive for long.

I'm more worried about how we will vape if/when the power grid fails.

Good point @kellya86 .

Butane vapes are considered off the grid. In a real shit hitting the fan scenario I don't think butane will be easy to source.

It drives me insane thinking about the thin thread of civilization we have weaved. Time to stop driving this thread off topic.

VR addiction probably will happen, the OP makes a good point

didn't everyone become drooling vegetables in the Lawnmower Man? See, this gives me pause. I am easily impressionable and could see myself becoming an addict right quick, especially if other senses get introduced somehow

I think what you described, would be a self-correcting problem, allow me to illustrate.

If you tried to live in this virtual world for any extended period of time, you would very likely lose your job. This means you would eventually lose your home or at the very least have your electricity shut off due to non payment. You would then be forced back into the real world.

See no worries to be had!

Besides if we are talking about the current generation of headsets, then you will likely go blind LONG before VR renders you homeless and destitute.

Just saying...
