Salutations HazyDaze,
Salutations PAZ,
How about a simple LED array...
LEDs are sturdier and they'll survive the unit no sweat. The LCD screen on my venerable HP-48 calculator is still working fine 20 years later but this one never feels any heat ever...
...to measure battery life...
This could as well be monitored silently in order to limit the amount of distraction for a user. It could take various forms, global LED blinking should get the owner's attention for example (in parking lights fashion)! Or maybe it could chirp briefly as in a fire detector, provided there's a piezo transducer inside to generate such noise. On another hand i'd wish to have the means to foresee what's ahead so i can manage with the remaining charge accordingly. In short i'm not certain what i'd like best in terms of power capacity feedback.
I'm aware that this involves more electrical circuitry, but may prove to be less prone to failure than the addition of a full colour LCD screen.
This point sure makes sense and i do concur but for one thing: most of the necessary electronics is likely to be present already, it could very well be a matter of FirmWare, mainly - which is something i'd like to be able to upload myself via USB by the way!...
As a wild guess i'll suppose the dial is made of a variable resistor, possibly configured to generate an adjustable voltage signal feeding a single analog-to-digital converting input. A pair of switches and a rudimentary resistor matrix then could replace this conveniently - MAYBE.
Additionally, i think
Hippie Dickie's very fine thread might provide additional perspective on such reflexions (and beyond)...
I believe it was in the INH 004 thread their next model will be one with a digital temperature display.
Oh, sorry about that! M'well, in that case i'd try to welcome it (with my fingers crossed on both hands!)...
