Holy Cow, replace your old Pyrex's before this...

So I just doing a run for a friend who just bought a half, spraying into a pan with 110 degree water as usual into my trusty Pyrex I've had now for who knows how long now, and boom, mid run catastrophe:

Pyrex shattered, butane + Oil Mix right in with the water... Nice. Immediately dumped the whole concoction into another Pyrex, then cleaned all the glass and the pan with ISO, so at least I'll be able to salvage most of it... Here's a pic cleaned:

So I guess my point with this post is to just warn everyone in case they have also used the same Pyrex (especially any of the new shit, its not really Pyrex anymore its Borosilicate, but that's another topic altogether) for countless runs, maybe its time to replace it before disaster strikes lol.

All Pyrex sold in North America after around 1998 is made from tempered soda lime glass which is more sensitive to temperature differences compared to borosilicate but will handle impacts better. If you can find a boro dish made by another company it might be better for your use, though it may have just been a freak accident if you've already used it several times before.

Sweet thanks, excellent information, now I have to find out if and where I can purchase some authentic Pyrex , borosilicate being roughly 60% more resilient to temperature changes seems to be very appealing to me, I have a habit of tossing my dish from hot water bathes, right into the freezer, and back again, so I definitely don't want to experience thermal fracture again, so I think I'm done with soda glass, that's a lot of money to just waste, especially when it isn't yours... Lol

But back to the disaster clean up... I managed to clean and reclaim all the oil from both the shards of Pyrex and pan, and from the second Pyrex I dumped the water / oil concoction into. The oil, as we all know from school, will not mix with the water, so I just let it sit on the top of the water for 2 days. Once it stiffened up and discharged the majority of butane, it gathered up together nicely with a dab tool right off the top of the water, golden and delicious, was kinda surprised at the quality of that specific lump from exposure to the water but it seemed to have no I'll effect on the material, only had to let it dry for a few hours in front of a heater and it came out pretty nice. All in all I got maybe a little more then 2g's back, which after seeing total disaster strike, isn't too bad, when I'm sure there's some out there that just would of considered it a complete loss and gave up.
