FuckCombustion Community Enail Project (Name TBD)

Hey everyone! There has been a LOT of talk in the HexNail thread about having a community-lead project for making a DIY enail that can be controlled remotely. There are a few members in the thread who already have experience with repairing or rebuilding their official unit, and there are also a couple people who are making DIY units based on similar hardware. Rather than bogging down the HexNail thread further, I think we should move discussion of this project to this thread.

I want to clarify that this is a community project, and any help, input, or criticism will be welcomed and appreciated. There is not yet a repository for collaborative development, but that will be coming in the future (feel free to make one if you want to get to work). This is not intended to be a commercial endeavor itself, however, people have expressed a desire to have this developed in a way where individuals or businesses would be able to create commercial products based on this project. For example, I'm sure there are vendors here who would be interested in selling completed units, custom units, or a DIY kit of the essential parts. I'm equally sure that there are members here who are interested in buying such products. We need to keep this in mind while working on this project, to ensure that vendors can go down this path without facing legal trouble. If anyone disagrees with this, please let us know why! That type of discussion is exactly what this thread is for :)

This weekend (hopefully) I will be assembling a DIY unit with hardware which is similar to that which is in the HN-02, and I will be testing it with the HN-02 software. Once complete, I will post a wiring diagram, a parts list, and perhaps a schematic. I will not be posting any software at this time, but once we are certain we have a software base which does not infringe on others' intellectual property, that will be made public.

There are many things that we should discuss as a group to determine how to proceed with this project. Rather than listing a bunch of stuff in this post, I think I'll leave it to others to start a discussion, to ensure that people are talking about what THEY want, and to avoid influencing the discussion/project more than I already have. The more original thoughts we can gather, the better this project will become.

There is one specific topic I would like to discuss, though: What should we name this project? Let's discuss this for a bit and then we can make a poll!

My suggestion: FuckCombustion Community ENail - FCENail

I'm loving that the enail with the potential to be the most advanced product on the market is in the hands of the community now. There's no financial incentive for anyone involved; only a passion for the scene and a desire to share results. This is what it's all about.

Very much looking forward to seeing where this takes us.

I like Talisman. It reminds me of an Insane Clown Posse song.

I hope future development leads to an ability to render and execute a more community inclusive, robust featured and stable operating CFW on currently existing hardware like HN-01 & HN-02 as well as hardware yet to be invented. Kind of like how xbmc/kodi established it roots before evolving into something more massive.

Just a dude
I’m fairly certain that with a diagram and basic instructions, I could build my own Talisman01. But I’m less certain about the software & SD card side of the equation, because I would be up a creek minus a paddle. I’m unsure how that works in this new environment but trust those who know can dumb it down enough.

So are those members with existing HNs 1&2 dependant upon a server hosting the hexnaild software?
Is TeamRosin still paying for this service while it’s decided how/if they want to move forward?
Or did TR release the update that allows HNs to be standalone without WiFi?
Or am I completely wrong and don’t understand the state of things?

The hexnaild software is on the device itself. We are using their server still, which they are paying for. They have not yet released an AP mode update.

The idea with the project is to eventually have a replacement for hexnaild, unless they open-source it. In the meantime, we can figure out a way to control hexnaild from other sources. Fortunately, that is pretty simple. I'll be looking further into that next week.

Hi guys, I just found an enclosure I really would like to get so much. It was part of a model series Kilby Glass had paired with one of his dab bulbs. Does anyone know where to get one?

EDIT: found the brand! It's a vintage model of a real VARIAC or rather a Powerstat from The Superior Electric Co from the sixties (~1963)

Would just need the enclosure of a damaged one. Butchering a running one would be an industrial-historic shame.

All the electronics of a controller inside this enclosure paired with a per plug directly connectable touch screen for advanced settings and the wheel just for setting the temp. That paired with a dab bulb w/o any labeling and a nice plasma bubbler - my dream!

Anyway, if anyone should see or have one of this pieces for sale please drop me a line!

But just this model only (probably Type 116)! Any newer design isn't so tempting for me

XLR connection below the "Powerstat"?

Connection for a plug-in display on the right instead of the fuse knob?

@Hogni That looks sick, but I dunno if I'd pair it with a hex nail. I'd be tempted to go with a MaxVapor enail due to the audio capabilities and attach it to an old speaker with a vacuum tube amp. You could also make use of the knob that way.

The ultimate setup would be to find some kind of small vintage wooden speaker box, perhaps an old wireless so you could replace the tuning gauge with a screen... something real art deco with an old marshall amp style fabric speaker cover and room on top for exposed tubes and that transformer you posted. Load it up with sound bites from Bioshock, would you kindly.

@Elemen0py that would be SICK

Everyone, I bought my last list of parts without having done the necessary research. Using the components I bought will require a bit more experience than basic soldering, so I'm going to make a parts list with almost exact equivalents to the HN-02, to avoid the requirement of additional power/resistance adjusting components. Here are the components, sans SBC (single board computer):

TC - https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/485-3263

SSR - https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/653-G3MC-202P-VDDC5

PM - https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/709-IRM10-5

PEM - https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/562-723W-X2-04

XLR - https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/568-NC5FDL-1

Switch - https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/611-CM102J3RS205QA8

Also, I got started on a much neater wiring diagram. Sometime this week I'll have an updated diagram to post

But just this model only (probably Type 116)!

Found a few hits with a basic search:

Parts only:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Superior-E...983573?hash=item3b19dcfd15:g:tWMAAOSwvyNa1-aW

Repairs, but they may sell just the enclosure?
https://www.ebay.com/itm/TECHNIPOWE...399989?hash=item2cc444bc35:g:z4wAAOSwiHpZ69UG

Apparently you can also send a quote to the original manufacturer. Maybe they have an enclosure lying around?

Happy hunting!

Many thanks! Could be worth an inquiry for sure.

@Elemen0py, as MaxVapor told they are thinking about a DIY kit w/o display. Could also be an interesting base.

Regarding Art Deco are you looking for something like that?

I don't want to set the herb on fire
I just want to start an enail that’s smart
In my heart I have but one desire
With my FC crew, no other will do

I've lost all ambition for herb under flame
I just want to be high as a dove
And with recognition that Hex-nail was lame
I'll deplete a bowl of Strawberry Cough, believe me

I don't want to set the herb on fire
I just want to start an enail that’s smart
In my heart I have but one desire
To vape ‘til I’m blue, some Gorilla Glue

Hey everyone! Here's the updated wiring diagram for the parts list above (much more legible this time around):

https://easyeda.com/editor#id=|bba7611ec531478792c71553b367c372

This site makes it REALLY easy to make schematics with pre-existing components, and fortunately all of these components are already created within their libraries. I'm not saying I'll have a proper schematic any time soon, but it's definitely something I'll look into next week. I'm going to post a similar for the HN-02 official in the hexnail thread shortly. It will look similar, but the wiring of the TC is a bit different.

Im pretty handy with a soldering iron and I have to say, unless theres something Im not seeing, that looks pretty easy to follow.

Are we dealing with microscopic solder points or are they reasonable enough to solder to? Modding some of the original Xboxs, you had to use wire that was ridiculously thin and difficult to work with.
