The four books that make up the Hyperion Cantos rank right up there with my favorite science fiction. Simmons is just one of those writers that seems to switch from genre to genre and still write at the top of the heap. He's won awards for writing Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror. If you get the chance, read Carrion Comfort. One of the best horror books out there along with a great fucking title.

Fuck me for loving books and only living 60-100 years. Not enough time to put a dent in all the great literature out there.
