Hi FC,
long time lurker/ first time poster here.
So i made the swith to vaping recently, bought an Flowermate V5. I love that thing, it ticks all the boxes for me. However, i have noticed small pieces of debris, mostly trichomes, settling on walls of my glass MP. (pretty surprising that trichomes would dislodge from weed when vaping, isn´t it ?) I believe it is not good idea to inhale any debris, be it yummy trichs or not. Is there any filter material that can catch any small particles while not blocking vapor and not restricting airflow much ?
I know that cigarette filters are told to be too dense and filtering THC from smoke, not sure how vapor particles compare. I would rather not use any fancy hardware like f-bomb to filter out vapor, as that would compromise stealthiness of use. I vape at home and i have kids who don´t have a clue, i rather keep it that way.
Thanks in advance, vape on ! :science:

Welcome on board! I have a FM5 too but I don't get debris in the mouthpiece, just oil to reclaim.

There are three things you can do to improve the situation:

1) compact the load to make a flat puck, using the provided tamping tool. It doesn't have to be super compact but tamp it enough such that it keeps its form during the entire session. It will improve vapor density and the herb should stay agglomerated.

2) use a coarser grind, it works equally well. I do grind by hand. When the herb is too dry and crumbles to a fine dust there's not much you can do, but here again the puck technic helps.

3) draw less hard. Inhale slowly for a longer time.

Now it's normal to get a golden/brown oil deposit on the glass mouthpiece over time, and you can reclaim it later with ISO, it's very potent and works very good sandwiched/mixed with herb (as to not stain the bowl too much)

EDIT: if you really want a filter, use organic cotton on top of your load

Thanks KeroZen, interesting to hear you get different experience considering

1) i do compact it with provided tool (though i don´t overdo it)
2) i do use pretty coarse grind after i experimented with different grinds and found it doesn´t matter much
3) i do draw as slow as possible

so organic cotton can go directly on top of load ? i would rather put some attachment with it on top of MP, to err on the safe side... that said, is it confirmed to not catch any cannabinoids ? i mean, sticky organic substances would soak into cotton, aren´t they ? Also, is cotton different to cigarette filter which is reported to be too dense or whatever ? Guess i may need to try for myself anyway, actually i have some cotton filter i planned to use for QWET filtering...

I just presumed more people experience this (there was one poster in FM thread who reported debris in his glass MP) so i thought someone may have found solution already. Some experimenting is due then.

Thanks again

You'll get particulates with any screen. That's just the facts of life with vaping, or smoking, for that matter. If you're complaining about the really fine mesh stock mouthpiece in the FM, you'll be complaining about any screen on any vape. To put things in perspective though, you breathe in more particulates in everyday life than you'll get through the FM screen.

Not really complainig, max. I just thought it will be good idea to minimize inhaling any particles. But it solved itself, after cleaning my MP i don't get any more debris, so it seems my experiments with really fine and very dry grind was the culprit, coarse grind with some moisture content leaves me with clean mouthpiece.
Now back to enjoying fine vape... :science:

It can be hard to avoid dry herb this time of year, which can result in a really fine grind (best suited for the Magic Flight and not much else). I've found a coarse grind is fine for most vapes, and that's what I prefer for the FM.

Sadly, I don't own your model of vape so I can't speak about specifics pieces of gear but in general terms I do know this. Water is your friend along with the container you use (bubbler, ash catcher, in line cooler, etc.) can clean up your hit a bunch. Activated carbon and its container design can really do a number on particulate counts too. The downside you are looking at items that will both reduce the strength of your hit, add complications to use, can cost some bucks and add ons often have their own learning curve. Good Luck
