I knew something would come along and fuck up this trip. Thanks, Colorado!

Wonder if its too late to cancel our trip....

I cant even express how disappointed I am over this. We spent a small fortune to come to this thing and at the 11th hour, theyre changing the rules.

Sorry to hear this. It really sucks to change the rules bigtime at the last moment.
If CO was going to do this, it should have been announced months ago.

Youre right.. it should have been. We have spent literally THOUSANDS of dollars for a once in a lifetime trip and now this bullshit.

And now it sounds like Johnny Law is going to be crawling all over the place too. Wonder if theyre going to be doing sobriety tests as people try to leave.

What I had envisioned as a great time now sounds like a bunch of bullshit and getting hassled by the man. If we didnt have four figures wrapped up in tickets, I would skip the cup but after this bullshit announcement, Im sure I couldnt even sell our passes if I wanted to.

2 fails here:
CO waiting until April to issue the guidance on rules.

The industry not letting people know about this and even bailing on the event. That's jacked up.

It is my understanding the cops have always had a presence at the Denver cups, so I don't think anything is changing there. I would not be worried about that part.

If anyone is planning on driving to the cup, be sure to check out the Mart's website for info on parking. Most of the parking will be offsite with a shuttle.

After thinking about this some more, the Cup should give all participants a 50% refund !!!

@c76man, Im sure that was done on purpose. The amount of tourism dollars for this event is HUGE. They know at this point most people are committed.

This is a crock of shit. Im curious about vendors that AREN'T dispensaries tho... dont they usually do sampling and I wonder how that will impact them? I dont see how it will since they arent resellers but who knows.

Colorado is giving us the middle finger.

Even in a'dam the free flower samples for cup judges weren't anything to write home about, or stress over. This was 14 years ago, but then the bigger deal was the available discounts at dispensaries.

Unfortunately, I'm willing to bet that High Times will point to the fine print about no cannabis provided with a ticket, and they won't provide any compensation.

I also just noticed in my VIP email that they have shortened the event by 2 hours each day. WTF?!

I hope that's not because vendors are dropping like flies.

I have a feeling this is going to be a pretty sad time Cup-wise and Id love to know how many vendors have bailed.

Im trying to take it in stride only because my wife planned all this and would get majorly upset if I went off about this especially given we've invested thousands into this vacation. If I could get a refund on my Cup tickets, I wouldn't go. We have travelers insurance for everything else. We almost went to the Seattle Cup but we picked this one instead because it looked way more fun.

She's already in damage control mode. "Im sure we can find plenty of stuff to do."

Its not even that this whole thing really upsets me very much. I got money, I can buy whatever I want to consume and I wasnt salivating over free samples anyway.. its just that I feel like this has flipped the whole event to a different vibe and I feel like its going to be a shitty time now only because of the atmosphere. Maybe it wont be that bad.

This this shit is already too commercialized for my liking and this is exactly what I figured would happen eventually.

It's all about the almighty dollar or whatever other currency.

This is about losing dollars. The amount of tourism money losing this event will cost Denver is huge.. Id bet 7 figures only because Ive been involved in smaller scale events and know how much money those events brought into the towns. Its a LOT more than you think and this event is probably 10 times bigger than any Ive been involved with.

I understand it's in the millions but that just makes it a tourist gimmick imo. Maybe I'm just too cynical, I'm the guy that thinks all holiday are commercialized bullshit. Once again just my opinion.

No offense but I'm glad I didn't go now.

FWIW, Denver locals are expecting that the non-dispensary booths will still be providing free samples. Hopefully they are right.

I'm working on refocusing my mindset. I'm going on 4/20, and I'm going to have a good time.:leaf:

Downward spiral
I cancelled my volunteer set-up gig to show my disapproval, doubt it'll make a difference, but I didn't want to be a part of it, if they're gonna be like this. I don't even know if I'll be attending, might be better off hitting up one of the private clubs instead. Big downer, really sucks for those traveling from out of state to attend.

I hate to say it, but I think I understand the prohibition of the sample giveaways. I believe they are trying to get more of a handle on public consumption. Even though consuming marijuana is legal it's not for everybody, and like drinking and proselytizing it really should not be encouraged in public places.

While that may be true, making that call after people have bought tickets, scheduled vacation, etc is bullshit.

I did just get an email that the only ones allowed to park onsite are VIPers and exhibitioners so I guess thats cool.

Theyve also changed the hours again. Now its 12-8.

How about beer tasting events? What's the difference between trying over 200 micro brews at a beer tasting event vs trying samples of bud at this event?

Those aren't really public spaces right?
If they are they have to be in fenced "beer gardens".
At least in my neck of the woods.

Actually, I have another take on the prohibition of free samples. Colorado is still working out the details of their regulations and rules. All legal growth and sales are closely monitored, including detailed records on every gram that changes hands. I think this was one of those situations where the rule makers were behind in issuing guidance. Why they chose April to make that decision may have had some nefarious motivations, though. Public consumption of cannabis is illegal, but they can allow on private property, like the cup venue, subject to the same smoking restrictions as tobacco in Colorado

The Great American Beer festival is held at Denver's Convention Center, sells tens of thousands of tickets, and people can drink as much as they want.
