I studied for my MA in US History and managed military National Historic sites. I've read hundreds of books about America's wars, especially WWII. I was just re-reading the best book about the experience of war I've ever read, With the Old Breed by Eugene Sledge, a Marine grunt who fought in the brutal deadly battles of Peleliu and Okinawa. I came across this line describing his time fighting on Okinawa in the mud, surrounded by dead bodies haunted by flies and maggots, with mortar shells raining down all around his flooded foxhole: "Hell's own cesspool."
