Chet Atkins is almost unheard of today, but wasn't overlooked.

I suppose you could put Roy Clark up here too, not overlooked at the time, but unknown today. :2c:

Wow. There's a name I haven't heard in awhile. Saw him playing in a small club with Jean-Luc Ponty wayyyyy back when. Nice.

Zappa was definitely overlooked or prejudged for many many years.
In my day, most people's answer to "did you ever hear Zappa?" was "isn't he the guy who ate shit on stage?"
I was introduced to Zappa by accident in the late sixties. I had a few dollars in my pocket and I rode by bike to the department store to buy a record. I saw an album called "Absolutely Free" - I thought it was free.
The joke was on me when I paid for it anyway and took it home, played it and couldn't stand it.
But I only had a few other records to play at that time so I kept playing it anyway.
Little by little it started sounding a little better until I was suddenly obsessed with it.
A few weeks later I had enough money to get another Zappa album - the only other one available at the time which was the first one, "Freak Out!" - I went to the mall to buy it.
Then I had pizza and I accidentally left the record at the pizza place. I figured it was stolen but nobody wanted it - it was there when I returned.

For years most people agreed that "Zappa sucks!" And you were a social leper if you liked that weird horrible stuff. I loved it and eventually I found a group of new friends who felt the same way.

It's even worse today because of remote controls on CD players. It's too easy to move to the next track if a song isn't doing it for you, even though it might take several good listens of something to find out what it's about and how you feel about it.

Doc Watson comes to mind. Flat top pickin' at its best. Another guy who was well known but not so much for his guitar was Waylon Jennings. He was like the Clapton of country music.

Hey guys, first post. Stumbled across this thread while searching for some Vape info (great site by the way, so much different then all the other 'weed' sites full of immature people showing off their 'purps' and 'dankies'). I plane on getting a Vapor Genie in the near future :D

Any way...over ever said Django...props to you. I will go out on a limb here and say the best overall guitar player to date. Just my opinion, but like another one pointed out, the music may not be your style but it is awe-inspiring and completely captivating. I HIGHLY HIGHLY suggest watching a movie called "Sweet and Low Down" with Sean Penn. Great movie full of amazing playing and a great story.

I have two players I'd like to mention that...the first being Howard Alden. A famous jazz player that my father had CDs playing of in the house ever since I can remember. Truly beautiful music. The second is a player named Johnny Winter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Npfn9UxBiSY great rock player with a great rock voice. I love the way he meshes slide guitar playing and amazing technicality.

Just had to resurrect this old thread after seeing this vid again.

There's not too many artists, as someone else stated, who can sing like that while Travis picking rhythm and lead, all at the same time. Lindsey Buckingham with his really unorthodox way of playing in my opinion, is one of the most underrated guitarist out there.

They are not overlooked by no means. People are into different music-not everyone is into CHON. I personally don't feel there are true "overlooked" guitarists. Some people are ignorant to some musicians and some people have their stand bys- There is only so much time in the day to listen and analyze. I find new guitarists all the time and claiming them to be overlooked is the last thought in my mind.

Kinda with you there, I just see them as some of the most original modern guitarists that come to mind- I honestly have no perception as to who's popular/been popularized as well

Me neither:p I just meant, that people noticed them but didn't care for them. I've had people listen and tell me they are good, but never listened to them again.
I like Chon very much and respect them. A lot of talent. Not to get off the subject, I hear a lot of progression in Chon insanely, except Nathan. While he does have good accuracy and skill,For some reason, I hear mostly snare and high hat work. I'm a Luke Holland fan as well. Amazing drummer. Back to guitarists.
