This is going to be controversial, but I nominate the Flaming Lips covering Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety.

I'm not saying its a better version, but its respectfully done and I love the earnestness, energy and psychedelic spirit they bring to it .... especially in this 2012 live version at the Hangout Festival.

Skip over the first set of the Lips... Dark Side of the Moon starts at 39:00...

I'm sure I'll have other nominations for this thread coming...

OK... back with more. I tend to like it when bands set the bar high with their cover choices.... or those who try something thats a little out of the box for them.

First, Weezer covering Radiohead's Paranoid Android. You dont see this one covered everyday.

Next, the Decemberists toured a few years ago with some high powered backup singers...including uber talented Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond. For the encore the backup singers took the lead and blasted out a duet cover of Heart's "Crazy on You". Totally out of the box for everyone involved.

Not even close to a classic, but saw this vid of Ryan Adams covering Bryan Adams recently and it cracked me up. Not a bad cover - shows which one of them has more talent.

Joan Osborne's "Son of a Preacher Man" is the best I've ever heard.

And because I actually am a preacher's kid, I've sought out the best versions. Would love to hear one to compare if you got it.

ORIGINALS THAT CAN'T BE IMPROVED

Thought about starting a different thread about originals that can't be touched by any cover version, but this is as good a place as any. The cover version of these songs don't suck, but they fall short.
