Edibles for sleep

Something ive been making since, well forever, are capsules for sleep. Currently I'm using twice decarbed sift hash combined with once decarbed indica rosin, (6 to 1) coconut oil and lecithin in gel caps. My wife and I each take one before bed. Mine hits me 45 minutes to an hour later. I start yawning heavy, do my bed time routine, and fall asleep in 20-30 minutes.

Ive had some that worked really well, and some so so, and some that kept me too high for sleep. Perhaps someone can relate, couch lock with an overactive brain......... sound familiar? I have to match my tolerance to what im taking too, and my tolerance does move with my usage. So what worked this summer might not work now. And there's the wake up high, or groggy, deal we might have happen at times.

The best sleep aids ive ever made were probably made from abv oil, but I don't generate abv oil anymore. :|

I'm starting to realize sleep has a lot to do with whatever your current state of mind is. When im really stressed nothing works great, but when im not stressed I probably don't need anything. Being physically tired without pain, helps as well. As it is though we take a cap nightly.

Enough about me, im interested in what other folks use, edible wise, for sleep. And how well they work.

The sleep inducing effects have always been the main draw for me when it comes to cannabis, I am relatively new to edibles, only been using them for a few months and I'm finding that, for me liver weed is good but not as soporific as 'lung weed'.
However I have not made edibles from hash yet and I'm hopeful that will be more soporific?

I had to look up soporific, for those that don't know it means sleep inducing. Thanks @Nina for introducing me to a new word, lol.

Hash may or may not help with sleep. Like the herb it was made from the properties vary.

When I double decarbed my hash it was to make cbn from degraded thc. Cbn is soporific. Without testing though I'm not sure how successful I've been. I do feel the caps do help us sleep though.

I'm sure vaping the right buds or hash or oil can help with sleep. But for my wife and I, we don't vape much anymore, so for us it's edibles, and in particular capsules. But I'd like to learn how others approach this question.

I have a sleep disorder that prevents me from going to sleep at a reasonable time. Sleep specialist have prescribed me melatonin which I've taken for years. I can take up to 12mg a day. I got to a point where nothing really helped so took a break from melatonin for 6 weeks. I now find that my ABV and coconut oil slurry capsules are usually effective with a smaller melatonin dose than I used to take. I

I have always found that my disorder goes through stages of different severity and that is still the case, sometimes I'll take some extra melatonin and an additional cap if I expect difficulties.

I usually have an edible early evening to get the ball rolling and have another an hour or 2 after dinner. I'll bring out some soporific indica for the vape and have a couple of bowls of that to help send me off too.

If for some reason I havnt slept well for a night or two I take a benadryl with my night capsule. They help as well.

My girlfriend and I eat homemade CBD cookies at night and it helps her sleep and I like the combined effect of CBD and vaping bud.
I buy CBD "smalls" for about 20 an ounce, decarb half of the ounce twice, after cooling, in the Nova and then infuse for 6 hours in a sous vide at 195F. Then I strain out the coconut oil using a potato ricer, add one egg and the cookie mix. Very easy.
She has tried foot baths, melatonin, etc. and the CBD edibles works best for her.

Thanks @Nina for introducing me to a new word, lol.
you're welcome :D , I learned it from books I read as a small child and I've been saving it up to use for decades now:
„It is said that the effect of eating too much lettuce is "soporific." I have never felt sleepy after eating lettuces; but then I am not a rabbit.“
Source: https://quotepark.com/quotes/116104...said-that-the-effect-of-eating-too-much-lett/
of course when she said 'lettuce', she meant 'devils lettuce' :D
back on topic!
for me the main reason edibles aid sleep is it takes seconds to administer, then I just have to eat my food and browse online, watch video etc until I'm sleepy. With vaping it takes me 2 hours or so to vape enough to get in the right place, I drift off following trains of thought and time runs away with me, my e-nail/PID controller auto shuts off at least twice before I'm done, then I get onto the 4am toast and cake phase of the evening:rolleyes:

Mendo Crumble in my Pax has been relatively helpful recently. I also have a EVO infusion that I like. Weed is hit and miss for me as far as sleep aid goes, like shredder says it’s a lot about my state of mind and stress levels.

I find that the sedative effects of any strain do seem to wear off after a bit too, but I try to find strains with high reports of sleepiness usually indicas.

I’ll also pop a Benadryl for emergencies. Best sleep aids are good bed time routines like no tv, no food, etc for an hour before bed. I also have been trying apigenin and magnesium L-threonate and L-Theanine which was recommended. Mixed results so far. Biggest thing for me is stress and anxiety levels.

I can only take edibles occasionally, tolerance grows quickly for me even only using edibles at night. I can take 10mg thc, my favourite is a high oleic sunflower oil and I'll add a half ml of sunflower lecithin, strain Sedamen. 10mg helps me sleep as well as vaping at least for a night or two then its not enough. I go up to 20mg and that works for another few nights, then up to 40 but that doesn't last long either and at that edible dose I'm still typically high/groggy the next morning not sleeping better than when I just vape and vaping my regular doses is ineffective when I'm on that high of a edible dose regularly. if I keep my evening edibles to no more than 3 days a week the edible is more effective at lower dose and my regular micro dosing flower doesn't suffer.

I've recently started playing around with a MCT 2:1 thc:cbn and I've had mixed results. the first time I tried it I took 20mg thc 10mg cbn and slept great but was completely out of it the whole next day needing to lay down a couple times during the day. while that wasn't particularly fun I thought good at least I know it works  but decided to wait a while before trying it again. I halved my dose and took it earlier in the evening, the high was pretty sub par which I would expect for a generic "Indica" that is probably a blend of several strains. slept ok but not great and was still a bit groggy the next day. so I upped my dose back to what I had the first time and slept lousy and felt like crap the next day. I've also been under more stress lately and my already crapy sleep is worse now than it has been in some time. so I'm still experimenting with the cbn but usually just go with the sedamen.

some of the best things I've done to help with my sleep is picking a bed time and sticking with it, breathing exercises and meditation and recently picked up a smart bulb???? yeah that stupid smart bulb has helped a lot actually , my light turns on at sun set which right now is like 5:45pm and dims as the evening goes on until by bedtime its like I'm sitting by candle light. has helped a lot in getting me ready for bed and if I wake up in the middle of the night I say a phrase to my tablet and the lights switch on with red light so I can find my way to the bathroom without the lights waking me up, which helps with the possibility of falling back asleep.

Nice post! I like your light idea, especially for my wife.

Did you buy cbn, or make it? Source? Without testing I'm kinda shooting in the dark as far as cbn.

I've made up to 3 times decarbed thc (hash) to make cbn. The capsules (45-50mg) did not get me high at all, but did help a little with sleep.

I found I like more of a high at night though and settled for now on twice decarbed hash combined with a mild, mellow indica rosin decarbed once.

Currently our sleep caps start at 45mg, but with the double decarb I think it's actually somewhat less than that. Cbn is not all that physcoactive. Once in a while I wake up groggy/high, but coffee straightens me out.

I bought the so called indica thc:cbn for myself and a cbd:cbn for my mom, both from the Ontario cannabis store so they are tested. I'm a bit disappointed with mine since if I want more CBN to see what that's like I have to take double THC. I think I'm going to grab bottle of what I got my mom and take a THC oil I like with it at the doses I want to try, and I don't think the cbd will hurt me either. I definitely want to try 15-20mg cbn with 10-15mg thc and see what that is like.

the smart bulb has been great this winter but it won't be as much help in the summer when the sunset isn't till way later but I'm sure I'll still be using the red light for midnight bathroom trips and maybe vaping a quick bowl, there's nothing worse than waking up in the dark and having to use the facility's and being blinded by turning on the light. I have a smart bulb in my room and bathroom and all I have to do is say hey Siri I have to go to the bathroom and the lights are turned on and I can do what I need to do, get back in bed snuggle into my pillow and say goodnight and I'm back in the dark.

Using RSO late afternoon (5ish) for solid sleep on most nights.

Shredder’s nitetime caps from ABV work best on me. They seem the strongest for getting rest (I get very sleepy 2hrs. after medicating with ABV oil) and can usually sleep soundly thru mid-morning. Like shredder, I now do not produce enough ABV to keep those caps readily available. My wife still vapes a bit, so I hope to have some ABV from time-to-time for occasional use.

If I allow myself to get wigg’d out / wired up before bed, even RSO can have a hard time knocking me out.

I was thinking about this recently!
I've heard other reports that ABV is one of the most somniferous edibles, and I cant get my head round it. Ya see, I find vaped flower knocks me out better than edibles ever do, and yet, even after I've inhaled plenty of sleep juice there's still some locked in there that can only be obtained via the oral route:o
However, edible flower is not optimal at sending me to the land of nod, so where does the 'bit that gets locked in the ABV' go when I make edibles 👀 (I hope I'm making sense :D)
Is it that the overall effect depends on the relative proportions/balance of active ingredients?

Using RSO late afternoon (5ish) for solid sleep on most nights.
Isnt it such great stuff💕
and so quick to make a potion from, just measure out the oil (+lecithin!!) warm it a little and melt in the glorious green tar💚💚

Abv can be strong or weak (buzz wise) depending on how hot it became during vaping. And cbn isn't real physcoactive.

So you could have sleep benefits without the buzz. I've made sleep caps like that but prefer the buzz as well.

When I used abv for capsules I made oil from the abv, so it was fairly strong.

Edit, fat fingers posted too quick.

Feco/rso effects are influenced by varietal terpenes to some degree, the overall strength, and what you combine them with.

So capsules made from feco may not have the same effects as in an edible combined with a carb (sugar), or caffeine.

I personally get to sleep better if I havnt ate or drank in a few hours. I take a capsule about an hour before bedtime and usually get to sleep in about 20 minutes.

Im normally at my highest for the day when I sleep. It can make getting up difficult.

I like taking capsules usually 25 mg RSO. Not waking up high but during the night my balance can be a little iffy.

I found this a while back, maybe it will help someone here. Somebody had a potency analysis of ABV done using ultra high performance liquid chromatography test. This is the thread I found it at https://libredd.it/r/abv/comments/ktd41f/abv_potency_experiment_results_are_in_full/?sort=new

It does show cbn is hard to make, at least from that guy's vape abv.

I don't have access to testing but I have experimented quite a bit..

In one attempt, in fact I probably posted it, I heated feco to 300°F for 60 minutes if I remember correctly. Then made caps at 60mg per cap.

I still have most the caps. They didn't work for sleep at all. We got too wired to sleep although very couchlocked. I doubt I made cbn, even at 300°F.

They are good for pain, or killing an evening on the couch, they're actually like taking a narcotic but not good for sleep.
