Donut Atomizers SUCK

Oh my god, I can't believe I wasted money on this piece of shit. People on here were curious about it when I was researching it, but let me tell you, stay away from Divine Tribe and other brand donut atomizers.

Let's delve into exactly why. We can call this a review, I guess.

First and foremost this thing is packed with design flaws. The biggest and by far is the lack of a splash cap, and combined with the lack of a raised heating element (it's recessed), wastes an extraordinary amount of concentrate.

With a raised heating element, you can take a dab tool and scrape all the concentrate that splatters all over the globe / mouthpiece, and then rub all those scrapings right off on the coil, so you can recover some of that wasted product. I was able to pretty much scrape huge hits out of the sides of my atomizer's mouthpiece and directly apply it to the coil. With the donut, this is impossible, even more so with the deep chamber version of the donut.

Because of the nature of how sticky the concentrate is, and because there is no edge thats reachable to scrape it against on the donut, you need a dab rig or some other atomizer on hand to scrape all that into, because you can't apply it to the donut's heating element. You can basically only drop in stable shatter that's been rolled up into a ball and then push it lightly into the chamber with a clean dab tool.

Second design flaw, it splatters more than anything I've ever seen, which would be fine if you could apply it back onto the heating element easily. Open this thing up after a session and you'll see that there's no actual product on the donut except maybe a thin layer, and the sides and mouthpiece will be absolutely covered with product.

Design flaw the third, once all that splattered concentrate cools and hardens, removing the mouthpiece becomes a test of strength and technique. I've actually ripped the base right out of the threading, with the mouthpiece still attached to it, because of how glued on that mouthpiece becomes. I was able to put it back together, but the seal at the bottom wasn't the same, now I have to be extremely careful when removing it, in fact, I can't even remove the mouthpiece without warning up the thing so that the oil un-hardens because the base will come off again otherwise.

Fourth design flaw, inherent leaking. There are airflow holes in the chamber right next to the donut's heating ring. After the concentrate (in my case, shatter) becomes liquidy, it'll seep into those holes unless you "cold clear it by continually drawing a hit after you release the power button".

Even with doing this, it still leaks. It leaks so much that Matt (divine tribe owner) told me to only use tiny pieces of shatter at a time, only load it up one hit at a time basically. Well, that kind of defeats the purpose of a portable vaporizer if I have to constantly stop to top it off. It's Not very discreet to open a wax container and use a dab tool to apply a small ball of wax every three hits. If you don't do this, after unscrewing the atomizer from your battery, there will be oil everywhere in your threading and in the air holes. You'll need to use isopropyl to clean it all up before screwing it back on.

Never have I been so frustrated and disappointed with something I've purchased in my life. And get this, I ordered two of them so I know it's not just a defective unit either. They both do this.

Really good concept that needs to be worked on immensely, for now I'm going back to coils and globes, or learning about dissolving shatter / wax into propylene glycol. Any suggestions about doing the PG thing would be appreciated. Thank you

Well you're not using it like Matt says so that sounds like user error.
Did you even read my post? I'm using it exactly like he said. He even acknowledged to me in an email it's a big work in progress and it's basically still in design phase. Yes there is "User Error", that error was the user who designed it.

Why do you feel the need to come in here and basically call me an idiot and that I'm doing something wrong? Is it because you have the donut too and have to somehow defend it because you use one? If something is a piece of junk, and I owned it, I'd like to think I'm not the only one who would be vocal about it.

I guess it doesn't matter what the product is, there's always going to be cheerleaders who rush to the defense of something when someone has a negative experience with it, rather than offer up actual help and advice, instead arguing with them telling them they're wrong.

Because all of the problems seem related to overfilling which you state Matt told you not to do, but you feel you should be able to overfill anyways.

I have the previous version of the donut which was mostly metal. It works alright definitely wastes some concentrate, but I think all pens do. Was thinking about getting the newer version as I only need a couple of dabs to get medicated so I figure reloading wouldn't be a big deal. I generally don't use pens a ton and try to just dab before I go somewhere.

Dude, I've been using the dt 2.5 for a couple of months. It works amazingly if you 1) keep the loads small 2) melt the load at low heat before increasing heat and taking draw 3) keep the damn thing clean

I have 3 of them, and have only been disappointed in myself when I fail to follow these three points.

Have you tried to scrape the splatter off the sides with a metal dabber and then use a lighter to heat the dabber and just drip it onto the atty.

Our rules state:
  • Don’t attack products or companies. You can post your opinion, and you can criticize, but posts written to offend are not allowed.
Claiming that you're writing a review does not give you a free pass to call a product a piece of shit. Any more language along those lines will earn you a warning point.

Did you even read my post? I'm using it exactly like he said. He even acknowledged to me in an email it's a big work in progress and it's basically still in design phase. Yes there is "User Error", that error was the user who designed it.

This post is also borderline. You misrepresent his comment since he didn't come close to calling you an idiot. That's something you read into it. Another thing, don't accuse others of being cheerleaders even if you believe that to be true. If someone breaks the rules, report it. If no rules are broken, ignore it and move on, or send a PM.

big fan of my donut coil in the alpha centauri, and i dont believe they are that much different. The little black donut that the AC has serves as a pretty good splashguard, maybe you can pick one of those up?

Have to agree here . I love the doughnuts in my Alfa Centuri especially now they are providing replacement elements. This makes them very easy to rebuild.

I do tend to tilt it up for my last draw to vape any of the concentrate that has got passed the heating element.

I gotta say, I really have had no joy from donut carts and agree with the OP on a lot of points.

I also think that LAYG carts more broadly really need something to be done about claim buildup and oil coming off the cart and getting all over the parts of the inside of the cart (or worse outside) other than the heater coil where you want it.

I don't even use pens anymore. Stopped bothering. I just have enough dabs before I leave the house to stay where I need to be for as long as I'm out.

Every time I get a hit off of the best of pen carts, the taste is just lackluster compared to a dab on a SiC, Sapphire or Quartz halo.

I did find the donuts are an issue because they seem to function optimally at mod/VV voltages, with your standard 3.7v pen not cut out for the job. Still, the leaking around the cart is a serious pain in the ass IMO and a separate issue to resolve.

W9tech's SiC donut wick designed to sit on top of the ceramic donut to keep the oil sandwiched between from going everywhere was an interesting idea. Still, didn't resolve the issue as something needs to retain the SiC in place, or it can drop out of place into the top of the cart when the ceramic is hot and the oil liquifies. That porous fine, brittle ceramic bashing about hot in the airpath is something I'd prefer to avoid. If anything could break finer, less strong SiC/SiN (never really got to the bottom of the black ceramic w9 use) of this kind, it is being hot and hitting against glass or stainless steel!

I really think that resolving the tendency for oil in carts to wanna get away from the heater and stuck in the wrong places is going to be a major breakthrough for portable concentrate vaping!

The zepto vape is sounding interesting, I would like to know more about their glass heater tek!

they say im crazy but i have a good time
i agree with herbivore21... i'm done with chasing around pens, and different carts to find one that works.

they all work at first, but it doesn't take long for them to crap out. Pen's IMO are not economical for the consumer... (great if your selling parts)

I only use pens when I have to, but my Divine Tribe on a VW mod is the first portable oil solution that doesn't suck-suck. I'm still contemplating if the Muad-Dib or the Hammer is the way to go.

I don't want to sound like a fanboy but since I have started using gear from w9tech all my old pens have stayed in the drawer. My main portable oil device is the Hercules SR74 on a Persei running at 7.4 volt. I also use the AC with doughnuts when I want to try out different oils, I run this at 7.4 volt too.

I have been using the Hercules for more than 6 months now. I used to clean it every few days but now I clean it once every couple of weeks and reload it every couple of days. I have never had to replace the heating element (a ceramic rod with no exposed wires) or any other part. I use the W9 core which provides a VV solution (what it actually does is allow me to keep to a constant voltage) when I have access to 220V or 12V. On the move I use 2 18350's in a Persei to provide the 7.4 volts.

I am the first to admit that these tools are not the cheapest but if I look at all the other stuff I have bought that did not last and/or deliver then it was a good investment.

Definitely sounds like a user error. Next time, try warming you rig when you dismantle it. This of course will turn the glue like wax, into an oily lubercant.

Yea i never was into the idea, the donut coils were all the hype with vaping ejuice...for about a day. But then people realized they suck, slow heatup times and retaining too much heat.
