DIY Pen Vape

So after hour and hours of searching(several weeks lol) i have become so overwhelmed with the abundance of information and also the lack there of. SO basically ill start with what i want. A super simple small portable vapor pen that i can pull of my jar of bho take a dab or so put it somewhere relativly easily smoke it and be on my way. I would like to use an ego style battery(probably the twist for its variable voltage) because of its price and how easy they are to find. The cartridge/atomizer is whats got me tripped up a bit. As i said ive done a copious ammount of research on this and i can seem to zero in on what would work best for me. I believe my requirments would be:

- Cheap
- Reliable
- Cleanable
- 510 thread
- Doesnt require full filling or e juice
- Easy to load without waste

So from that i figure that these are my options:

Vapor Globe (too big not really what im looking for)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Glass-Globe...369?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cd499ca61

Vhit/Seego (not really sure about these read mized reviews)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Full-Wax-At...313?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a83aec1b1

Kanger 510 (horizontal coil im guessing but ive heard these are very unreliable)
https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/...RyI83TmVc4pRrXYN-wEVCsyX0XpsQvR0vx1_40EP-LnOA

So i guess what i need to know is what is going to work best for me theyre are lots of options out there. Im leaning more towards a modded 510 atomizer (brand im not to sure of) just because they are cheap and simple but once again im really not sure. SO FC USERS! In your professional opinions what would work best for me im open to any and all suggestions thanks!!!!

I'm in in the same boat as you man, new to vaping, don't know where to start other than I know I want a decent pen vape that I can use while I'm on campus or out and about.

If you're looking to go the build your own route, i threw together a seemingly decent looking pen for <$40. That's with an extra battery, depending on which battery you go with if you decide to go with just one it can come in <$30 or even <$20. I haven't ordered it yet so I don't know how well it'd work or how reliable it'd be. But check out fasttech.com, I'm not affiliated with them at all, I just saw a link posted over on the grasscity forums and checked it out to find some killer prices for "e-cigarette" parts, there's vaporizer pen parts mixed in there too, don't let the category name fool you. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance, I'm new to the vape side too, and it's hard to find any assistance that isn't "get a mflb!" or "get a volcano!".

Here's the parts I'm probably going to order:

I am right there with you guys, been vapin consistently for about 6 months now. I own a VIP by SSV pen and also the whole VaporCone series. I definitely recommend a DIY over any of these. I'll share with you what i have learned so far.

1)When it comes to the battery VV is cool but there is no need. I had mine set a little too high and burned through 2 brand new atomizers in less than a week. A normal ego battery will do just fine

2) when it comes to the atomizer, bigger is not necessarily better. Unless you have enough meds to load full grams at a time you're going to end up removing the mouth piece and moving concentrates from around the coil to on the coil (think that made sense). Not a bad thing just kind of a pain when you're on the go. In my efforts to find good attys i have been pointed in 3 directions. The Glass globe, omicron 2.4 carts, and gentlemen vape's v2. So far i have only used the v2 and it worked great but only lasted 3 weeks of my use.

I live in an area where medicating is heavily looked down on so its hard to bust out a rig and do some dabs. Therefore my pens get used morning to night. Much heavier use than i think intended and reliability has become my main issue.

Bholover i would recommend a 900 mah ego battery, still pretty stealthy but holds a good charge. Get the 5 pack omicron 2.4 carts, should last you anywhere from 6 months to a year depending on use. And just get any drip tip you like, all of mine are rubber except one SS tip on a ejuice cart. The 5 pack of attys is 50$ but in the long run you will save big time. For 4 attys in the past 2 months i've paid around 120...

Hope this helps you or someone else

P.s. I know i said i havent used the 2.4 carts but that is what the master vapists on here have recommended to me. Just havent got around to ordering them yet.

Just placed my order with fasttech, now I have have to wait patiently for my items items to arrive. I hope they're speedy!

Here's what I ordered, in in case anyone would like to base an an order off off of something. I don't know about any parts yet, but I'll post post a little review when I I get it.

heres the most common one that most pen vapes are using, hope this helps.
Also ive been getting into rebuildable atomizers and some people are building these to use with waxes and budders ect ect.

This one here if you read the descriptions is said to be a dual chamber , one on top for ejuice and the bottom one for thicker oils ?????
trippy if you ask me.

What is the benefit of the globe? Is it a bigger hit? I can't understand why - Instead of it storing in the globe it just stores in your lungs. Or is it that the globe is airtight allowing for more hit's on 1 pull?

Or - is it just aesthetics?

The only benefit is that when it gets knocked over it smashes and needs to be replaced.

Some might find direct inhalation of hot vapor to be irritating, so you could in theory let the hit vaporize in the globe, allow it to cool, then take it. The problem with this is that you are almost sure to burn your oil doing it and it will taste bad anyways.

also posted this in another thread but its relevant here as its a DIY oil vape

I made a solid core 'waffle cone' out of stainless steel mesh and my waffle cone holder is a vertical microcoil. I just pulse the coil to warm the cone and load it up with dabs and vape away.

if it looks like there is a puddle of reclaim right under the coil, it's not, just a weird reflection in the picture. all the oil stays in the cone and doesnt fall out, holds at least 3 dabs worth, I prefer load as you go for the cleaner taste. whatever little reclaim does build up is super easy to scap and throw back into the cone.

Freaking genius!!!!!

Iam going to get a cheap rebuildable and it ill be my dedicated wax cooker lol lol.

I dont see any benefits from the globe , all i can see id the globe allowing easy viewing of the vapor.
I hear they hit pretty hard but get fouled up really fast and taste starts to degrade.

@jdee
Iam interested in your coil set up, how do I go about making it like your????
any help would be much appreciated !!

Whats the ohm reading of your RDA?

It's 1.5ohm, and works great on 3.7v and just to confirm I tried it on my crappy 600mah ego batt and it fires and vapes just fine.

Howto microcoil waffle cone mesh:

Have a set of drill bits handy, pick a size according to desired coil, small drill bit makes longer narrow coil, larger bit makes wider shorter coil. Think I used size 9/64 for this one.

Using kanthal a1 resistance wire, preferably in sizes 26,28,30awg (I believe I used 30..or was it 28...can't say for sure) wrap it around the drill bit tightly trying to make the wire touches, each wrap will add roughly 0.1-0.2ohm to your coil (it varies based on wire gauge and drill bit diameter used). For example my coil at 1.5 ohm is a 7 or 8 wrap.

Take the coil off the drill bit and using needle nose pliers to compress it just enough so that all the coils are in contact with each other (like pinching a spring) but not more as to deform its tubular form. Take a torch to the coil until its red hot all over the coil to remove any springiness out of the coil and allow it to retain its perfect shape.

Thread your drilbit through the coil to help you setting up your dripper. Wrap one end coil around positive post, other end of coil around negative post, making sure the coil is close to the posts as possible without actually touching, using the drill bit to help you with positioning the coil perfectly while retaining the shape. I like to use a vertical coil as the oil obviously melts and falls so this just makes sense.

Select a grade of stainless steel mesh that works for you. I used #325 mesh because its not as tight as #500 mesh. It's used in ecig atomizers with great success to wick vegetable glycerin which is very thick like syrup. The #500 mesh is used in wicking propylene glycol based liquids which is not thick at all. Cut a small piece of mesh, probably as little as 1/4 the size of a business card would be enough. Wrapping the piece of mesh around a drill bit is a good way to make a perfectly round wick, or a paperclip or needle tip. I just made a hollow wick, put it in the coil, and filled the inside of the wick that had space left with more rolled mesh. For the bottom you can just pinch a small part and fold upwards to close off the bottom. The other option is to roll it like a cone and not have the bottom open.

It should be noted microcoils don't operate like traditionally wrapped coils, in that normally using that amount of resistance wire would require more energy to heat up but since they are all touching the resistance is dropped a lot. This ends up saving battery life and giving better performance. Another benefit is that you get a larger surface area of heated mass to work with and that the heatup curve is more smooth/gradual, than straight resistance wire that goes bright red and tastes burnt.

also safety is important have a multimeter and test the resistance of your atomizer before firing it, because you know..shorts and stuff.

I forgot the mesh needs to be oxidized or else it will create a short. You can either torch it till it glows red (then let it cool, it should be now black and oxidized), or you can put the atomizer on an unregulated mechanical mod and pulse fire it until all the hotspots get worked out and it glows evenly.

Here's my latest work... a Terminator Dripping Atty. Joined AWG30 Nickle wire to AWG32 Kanthal using a capacitive wire welder. Wrapped a small 1.8Ohm coil. Threaded the coil into the hollow section of XC-116 ceramic braided wick. Wrapped #400 Oxidized Stainless Steel Mesh over the XC-116. Assembled the coil/wick low in the ceramic. Can put large balls of wax in this and blow yer head off! Cheers.

So I did this a week ago for the first time after much time trying to dream up a new way. I've been looking at the Terminator Dripping atty for this for a long time. These can be in limited supply. Right now I believe they are being sold at Stormy's Vapor Cellar and it is stated they will be the last batch. I recommend anyone DYI'ing to pick one up. It's too complicated to be used as a dripping E-cig atty, but it does everything for a concentrate pen since it comes with a large ceramic cup.

My first attempt burned out in one day, but the build in the photos is strong after 3 days of heavy use. I think I broke a weld on the first one, as it can be tricky to get good spots. The capacitive wire welder is not an all out necessity, but since I have one I use it. One can make very small splices using silver wire or smaller nickle wire and an albright knot as an alternative.

I currently am holding a ball of low-grade hippy-cured BHO. It was derived from shake, but very potent to the head, just not a clean burner. My coil/wick could give a crap. It just burns whatever I throw in it. I even have some bubble hash that steamed off quite nicely. Any crap left behind I just scoop out and/or burn off. Since the coil is internal, it's not taking as much of a beating when cleaning and burning. Instead the SS is doing much of the skillet work. The even glow you see in the pics is the XC-116 heating up. It just seems to become part of the thermal mass and glows along with the kanthal.

I should also add that the host is a Rainbow Heaven MKB-TS. It's a China Clone of a GGTS. Great device, and fitted with a "stealth cap", makes it my favorite host for a concentrate pen. I started a trend with these on Electronic Cigarette Forum with people "shimming" switches. I found that rolling a small piece of brass sheet into the body of the switch reduced voltage drop and makes these little powerhouses that can accept a wide range of batteries. I've even stacked up to 6volts.

Thank god there are more FCers I can bounce ECig ideas off of
:)
I have a fat order coming from slow tek with a couple mechanicals and some Chinese RBAs and am about to build another custom juicer to run my THC e juice that will hold a 20 ml bottle for weekend camping or group sessions
It will feed a side car drip atty. and hold a spare 18650 on a switch.

very nice set up, I just got a astro by kato clone (mechnical) and a rda atomizer (wick and wire, three post). I really want a Poldiac lol lol lol .
Iam hoping to order me some wire and wick, maybe some ss mesh, & I want to try out a cermaic wick ???? What do you think ??? Have you tried a ceramic wick???? or is there no set up that it can be configured correctly??

What is the benefit of the globe? Is it a bigger hit? I can't understand why - Instead of it storing in the globe it just stores in your lungs. Or is it that the globe is airtight allowing for more hit's on 1 pull?

Or - is it just aesthetics?
Could be wrong, but these globes look like the one you got with your Dr Dabbler. Didn't you try it out yet?

P.s.--They are now also making the replacement globe "nail" coils with a screen over the coil, ala MicroG/Cloud pen coils. Ugh

Yeah, @upsetter21 stated he uses xc116 or xc18 wick, looks awesome , no burt taste rated at over 2000 degrees or something. I have seen actual hard ceramic rod wrapped in wire and some even wrap that rod in cheesecloth to absorb more juice and give thicker hits with amazing flavor.

hmmmmmm???/!!!!!!:hmm:

Couple things to note if you plan on going the xc116 route.

The creator of this product (3M) upon learning that people were using xc116 in ecigs came out and said very strongly "this product is not intended for use with personal vaporizers". Then they stopped selling xc116 to people who were known ecig resellers. The reason for this is that the sleeving needs to be treated in a kiln at very high temps, for hours and hours to remove the what appears to be some type of coating that may be toxic.

On the other hand ekowool works really great in ecigs as an alternative to xc116. It is amorphous silica, so it's not a health concern like crystalline silica. Xc116 is ceramic, who knows what the health implications of inhaling ceramic fibres are, but we know where 3M stands on the matter.

I have an ad in the classifieds if you ever want to clear out some an SS setup. Seriously, though, nice damn drawer!
Funny thats the top drawer the two drawer below have more stuff.
I love the cannabis plant (flower) more than any vaporizer.
Smoking I love however it doesn't love me.
These dsys vaporizing is my only option.
My wife who has never tried cannabis preferes I vaporize to keep it scientific!

I know there is a lot of different choices out there however I have been having good results Where a lot of people fail?

Concentrates are cool however well grow flowers are amazing!

I like both!

On the XC-116 concerns... yes it has worried me. I happen to torch the batch I have. It is clearly treated with chemicals, but you can tell when they burn off. I use a map-gas torch. As far as particulates... this is one reason I wrap the SS mesh over the XC-116. It contains the fibres, which are then made completely sticky upon the first loading. I can't imagine any particles breaking free once the THC muck is around.

Valid concern however

I am looking for the smallest adjustable voltage 510 compatible battery that I can find (that still is of good quality). Although some here don't think it is worth it? I thought maybe the low setting might be more useful than the high.
I think I want to use it with Dabstix or 2nd choice micro-vaped skillets, globe, etc.
Unless you have a better suggestion of coil for bho wax. Those are 510 I believe...but Ego pens will run them, right? I plan to use 2.4 omicron carts in addition for CO2 wax. And then something generic for PG probably.
Also what are good small non-adjustable voltage batteries for use with these (and how many Mah? - 900 is enough?)? I am confused on the fittings but it seems like Egos will run all of them (but the omicron needs adapter?).
Is 650 MAH enough and what about this? http://www.madvapes.com/stam-ego-variable-volt-battery.html
So is there a good but still small battery for these? This looks small: http://www.madvapes.com/808-black-ego-battery.html or http://www.fasttech.com/products/14...00mah-rechargeable-battery-for-ego-electronic
And if you think there are better attys or carts I am all ears. Are these fasttech globes and coils as good as the Dabstix etc. ones? They look the same. Are they good enough for the price?
TIA guise
