I used a tiny oring on the threaded collar at the base, it seems like the element doesn't actually sit high enough to transfer heat quite like it does in the SSV or DBV, if you look into the GonG it just barely peeks out over the top- For this reason I think I'm gonna give this HC back to my buddy and get a DBV cover; they seem a little smaller lol
Edit- On top of that it's a static temperature iron, so my only option for adjusting would be to build a box with a rheostat controlling receptacle output- not ideal but works

They have them pre-made if you wanna take that route. Router speed controller or some kind of lamp dimmer, they should work right?
I'm really wanting to try and mount the VHW's heater cover, but not about to throw down 112$.

I have an electrical question and this thread seems to be the best place for it. I am trying to make a portable vaporizer with the 110vac 60w ceramic soldering iron. I picked up the smallest 12vdc -110vac inverter I could find that was 75watts output. I can plug this into my cig lighter and it won't glow the rod unless I start the car. Once the car is running it glows red hot. I am thinking I just needed a bit more volts from the alt and it works... Perfect!!!
Now I take an 18v Dewalt battery and hook the leads to the input side of a 2 amp dc to dc variable volt power supply. I set the voltage to about 13.5v and try it but the soldering iron led is pulsing instead of being on solid like in the car. * more voltage pulses it slower for some reason. The input voltage of the vvps 4.5v- 24vdc and the output is 0.93v-20vdc. I might try hooking two dewalts in parallel but my gut is telling me that my alternator current is what is making the inverter work properly?
My other option here is feeding the rod 48vdc-67.2vdc *(just the rod, not the board)* which works quite well actually but I would perfer a way to run this from 12v vvps if possable. Hmm thinking this through now maybe I need a 12vdc to 12vac converter to feed the inverter? I dunno..

Yes, for some reason, I think a poor connection in my cig lighter some where would not glow the rod with the inverter, it would get warm but not glow unless the car was running.. Today however, I jumpered the inverter directly to my car battery and it worked awesome! So it should work fine if i get enough amps to it, that or i was doing something wrong with the dewalt battery? I think i can get this going now though with enough AW 18650's. Pretty sure the iron only draws less than 0.6 amp so still a bit confused.
Edit: I think the inverter draws a few amps just by itself to produce that 75 watts and my vvps will stop at 2A so maybe that is causing the LED to pulse.
I have 4) 18650's in a 4S1P pack config now and if I hook that to the DC-DC vvps, set to voltage to 13v on the vvps, the LED on the iron will pulse rapidly but not get real hot.
If hook the 4S1P pack straight to the inverter @16v, the LED will just flashes once on contact.
I will try a multi packs of 4S1P in parallel and see if that works. again, i dunno..

@Joel W. - i'm not sure, but it sounds to me like a current-limit problem - the car battery can deliver hundred amps, and unless the 18650s are high current, like A123Systems LiFePO4, they may not deliver enough current.
you have a 60 watt iron, so you need to deliver 5 amps from the 12vdc power pack, after the power loss in the inverter. Some LiIon/LiPoly batteries have a current limit pcb, for operational safety.

@Hippie Dickie Thank you. My batteries are AW IMR 2000mah 18650's x4 in series now (4S1P mod pack no protection). I found a good deal on them (x16) so that is what I'd like to try and use for this project? Is 5 amps doable with these in some config? Car battery is not portable IMO so maybe I will feed just the rod lots of volts and skip the vvps and inverter all together.
I hooked up an amp meter this morning to the car battery and the inverter with the iron plugged in and on full and it pulled 7+ amps at first and then dropped to 3 amps in the first 20 seconds once it was glowing. Much more than I anticipated.

Edit: My flawed thinking was that a 60w 110v rod that draws half an amp when plugged in the wall would still draw half an amp when feeding 12v. The amps of course must go up.

right, the watts is what will tell you the amps, given whatever voltage is used.
watts = volts * amps, or amps = watts / volts
There are more consumers than creators. It also prob does not help that the DIY section is tucked away in the Ask FC section.
Some people don't like saving money and being self sufficient... it's too hard. Once I started down the DIY road I found it was stupid easy to make something heat up to vaping temps.
I was gonna tinker with ceramic heaters and ended going with a stainless steel cartridge heater for $20 ish.
A battery powered wand sounds cool.

Plus, it's so rewarding and satisfying to vape w/ something you made yourself 
and once you can make something that vapes well enough for you, then you won't ever need to buy another vape again... the want can be another story though

That was just me thinking that I wanted more power for another experiment, so I tested to see if the board could handle another ceramic rod. It could.
I pretty much use my lsv for vaping flower and the stock irons to heat my vise jaws for squishing rosin.

To be fair, I really enjoy seeing what you and everyone else comes up with I'm quite interested in all of the tech atm after seeing herb irons, lsv wands, enails etc. there doesn't appear to be a a massive amount of tech involved, heat source, temperature reading, power adjustment, doesn't seem to matter if it's a portable vape, tabletop, rosin related...
