As the question in the thread title asks, before you ended started vaping (including dabbing - which is after all just conduction vaping extracts), did you combust or did you start out vaping?

I often see threads where OP's outline that they are ex smokers and want a vape to fill the gap smoking used to fill. I often find myself assuming here that we all surely must have combusted before vaporizing - but that got me to thinking - did we really all smoke before vaping? Surely there must be at least one or two exceptions?

Or maybe I'm way off and there is a significant contingent of vaporists who never smoked!?

I think that one problem that you may find throwing off the representative-ness of this is that many on FC became vaporists for health reasons, and feel so strongly about it as a result. Well, the thing is, you usually don't (it's just human nature, man), do things for the health benefit without first feeling the negative effects first. So the vast majority of vapers on FC I'm sure started out smoking. I picked up my first vape 3 months after starting smoking though, but it was the efficiency that drew me in, not the health benefits. I've definitely felt those though since I mostly fucked combustion.

I think there's quite a few on the medical side that got into vaping before they smoked. I think the majority smoked before they vaped though.

I smoked for 2 years before my brother got an Herbalizer and I had to get my own after trying it.

But I like it!
Health Canada would only allow smoking for MM patients for some time. It was stories like 'Health Canada forces 6 year old to smoke marijuana' that changed things a bit. Now Veterans Affairs Canada provides up to $300 every few years for a vaporizing device. Pretty much every vet I know either did, or does, still combust. Many are looking at vaping now as a health change. I haven't smoked a joint I've rolled since the early 80s, but yesterday I rolled 2 for dog walkies, and it was actually kinda nice. And having read med literature on the lack of risk associated with smoking cannabis flower, I'm not completely against the idea of the occasional joint. For myself anyways. And this is just my view from yesterday, so it may change in future. At the worst I know how to use the rolling machine.

** always look at the arrow direction on your rolling widget. If you roll it the other direction it will eject all your herb into the keyboard directly underneath where you were rolling. Doing it on a tray doesn't seem like such a dumb idea now, eh?

PS - it was only a year ago that the Canadian court system forced the government to allow concentrates. Prior to that, as a med patient, you were still at risk for having tincture in coffee, or medicated rice crispy squares, in your possession. Which of course isn't really enforced, but knowing you could potentially get locked up because you like budder made many feel like criminals...

That's absolutely awesome that the canadian government is like that man. Also I agree with you. I've mostly fucked combustion. I own a little joint roller machine, and papers, and filters/pre-cut crutches. I find myself never using them anymore! Even my one or two combustion pieces. I think my hammer pipe hasn't been used in a month, I should at least give it a cleaning and put it away. Same thing with my little steamroller/bowl. I just don't find myself combusting as much. Every time I do, I find myself thinking that it just tastes absolutely disgusting. I don't even smoke bogies anymore man! Once a month or so I'll roll a joint, or join in on a blunt, but other than that, it just feels more satisfying to vape. I find that with a lot of smokers, it's the ritual of grinding and rolling/packing and lighting they love, but for me that same feeling has been replaced with grinding up a small amount of bud, sucking up my elbow pack / enano stem / firewood capsule depending, and vaping. Just sitting down with a stem for 10-15 minutes and then packing it again and being where I want to be, I can't imagine smoking joints anymore. I measure all my bud in enano packs. If I were to grind up enough for a joint (even with a filter), I'd look at it and go "That's a damn waste, I could vape half of that and be where I want to be, instead of smoking that and then some"

of the 50 years i be using cannabis, only the last 15 have been exclusively with a vaporizer (using glass pipes and joints/ziti before the first vape) ... for health reasons, after i caught asthma, and then i just kept vaporizing. i pay attention to health and fitness, so it has to be an all glass vape, with accurate temperature control ... it makes a difference to me, but i'm just a touch OC.

i always found "rolling" to be a misnomer ... my technique was crush and fold - single paper no glue strip.

I probably would have smoked a bit first even if they had been available when I started using cannabis. I think I would be hesitant to drop a couple hundred dollars on a vape without even knowing if I liked cannabis. But maybe I would use edibles first and then graduate to a vaporizer. Probably not though. I love my flowers for sure.

I was really impressed when I went to the cannabis doc and he started a lecture about how you should only use edibles/tinctures or use a vaporizer. Then I rattled off the vapes I have owned and used and told him it had been a couple of years since I smoked anything at all. I felt so proud.

I was at the supermarket and some kids walked in, smelling like cannabis, but mixed with ashtray smell. Totally messes up the flavor.

Fuck combustion (unless it is a BBQ or campfire!)

I prefer every aspect of vaping, although I do still combust, never see myself going back to majority combustion. I see vaping as the next evolutionary step, 10 years down the track, who knows could many who have only ever know vaping for inhaling MJ.

I smoked cigs for 20 years and joints every day for 15 of that. Swapped it all for ecigs and herb vapes 16 months ago now. I have had the odd blip along the way but so far I've had 1 cig and one joint so far this year.

In the sixties and seventies, I never heard of vapes. But now, I vape about 75% of my herbs and eat the rest. I could see just eating it at some.point.

Medically, we just need to get those cannabinoids in us. Vaping being safer than smoking and eating safer than vaping. But dosing can get tricky when eating it.

And here is something you may want to try at some point. Eat a six month or older bud raw. Over time it naturally decarbolizes, and eating an older bud can really get you ripped.

I should of eaten my 1 year old gram that I saved for shits and giggles, used my food saver.
Tasted stale, but felt it didn't lose any of its potency, maybe a small unnoticeable amount...

I never smoked a joint in my whole life (50+). Started vaping last summer out of curiosity. Bought herbs on darknet. Got a Solo. Quite an investment when you never tried it before. But hey, it's illegal, so its gotta be good

Haha! Yessss, we have 1! Not the age bracket I'd assume to try vaping before smoking. Was the MJ purely for recreation and was the vaping a conscience decision made for Heath reasons?

100% recreational and I shouldn't smoke with mild asthma

Awesome bro, glad to hear it's now a time when people can start their MJ use on the vape.
I personally still combust, and will probably for a long time as its a social/bender thing but I know that for the vast majority of my future MJ consumption vaping will be the primary method.

Been enjoying herb for 50 years. Discovered vaporizers in 2009 and have been pretty much vapor only ever since.

Interesting (to me) fact... I'm on no meds other than Prilosec. At my age, weight, and old lifestyle, that's nothing short of a miracle. In fact, I had a cardiologist tell me that. He was gobsmacked and asked what my secret is. Knowing it isn't genes, I attribute it to daily doses of marijuana over a 50 year period.

I used to be all about the one hitters. Now a vapcap satisfies that urge.

Used to love hash too, as the smoke was less irritating, but now that I vape I'm mostly a flower guy.
