Dan's Nomad Mockup & Shipping thread

I hear ya' @GreenHopper, it just seems so humble/selfless for an artist to work so hard for their vision and let the end user have the largest visual impact.

It's quite incredible really.

I think it just goes to show that no matter how invested @Dan Morrison is in this project and his artistic style he's enough of a craftsman to take a step back and think of the customer first. :)

I completely agree, it's incredibly open and inspirational of Dan to allow us to customise his creation to our liking.

I think that is the genius of his work, he's been so inclusive of this community right from the start. I think that is part of his artistic endeavour, to create something the user can make their own. I believe the modular design of different heater modules and the wide selection of sheath options is all part of Dan's plan to offer the end user full customisation

That's the impression I took from following this project as well. Each Nomad is designed and built by Dan but at the end of the day it's going to be in someone else's home and hands; so I feel like he really wants that Nomad to feel YOURS. I see allowing us to customize the Nomad as a creative choice by a master craftsman who wants his customers to be happy above all else.

Not trying to speak for anyone either, just the impression I've gotten from following the Nomad's amazing progress!

@Dan Morrison regarding the sleeves, thanks for the mock up and response! Looks like more goes into making the sleeve than I thought. I was thinking it seems like there are at least some people who want to see/buy the Nomad you envisioned. Maybe there could be a "production" sleeve that the Nomad comes with? Let us see your Nomad ;):brow::haw:

Also I think it would be a cool idea to include a spare sleeve (which could be the production sleeve for us getting a custom one).. Not that I don't trust you sourced good materials; I just don't trust myself to care for it properly. Maybe the Nomad could be shipped with a spare for us clumsy/adventurous folks? Not sure if that adds way to much work/cost or something, just an idea! Can't wait to see some more mock ups and that demo video.

I'm thinking maybe this one for my sleeve?

Yes options are great... until you are facing the checkout page and realize that:
1) choices are difficult and place a burden on you
2) you want all options at once in the end (like all 3 heaters and several sleeves) and your wallet is upset by the order total displayed on screen.... :o

Curse you damn VAS! And curse you Dan too while we are at it!!! :p
How did you know?

@VaporSipper, I played around with that in photoshop as well! I definitely like the variations in colour for the stem collar. I'll be offering a few different wood choices, padauk, walnut, african blackwood, cocobolo, cherry, perhaps beech... and mmaaayyybbee later on, dyed wood OR acrylics... All will come with variations in price depending on the material.

@GreenHopper, You are correct. ha.

The design is mean't to be customized, but only so far. It's a balance. The points of customization are purely cosmetic, I don't give options that I think will interfere with the functionality, nor do I think any combination of colours/materials will compromise the aesthetic vibe I'm after.

I drew a lot of inspiration from that cyberpunk... space scavenger... recycled Star Wars-y... world. And I feel like a big part of the design IS the ability to mix n' match materials, colours..etc.. That's what makes it feel more authentic, as if you had bodged together a vape out of scrap parts pulled from an old star cruiser crashed on a remote planet...

hahaha, okay, a bit fanciful.. but you get the idea.

It's the collaboration between maker and user that completes each vape.. and I don't think the visual concept would be the same without it. I NEED you guys to customize it, for the sake of the design!

@Prolusio, The stock sleeve is just raw, unfinished Kraft paper. I will perhaps have a logo stamp, much like the one that went onto the Okin boxes... but with an updated design. I am also deboss stamping the unit number onto the side, and maybe the name nomad...depending on if it looks cool...

If I were to include an extra sleeve, that sleeve would have to cost me like.. $50 in time. It's just not possible without a major price increase. You can consider the sleeve to be as durable as thick leather. You can toss it, drop it, get it wet, whatever you want.. it'll be fine. IMO they only look better with wear.

@Fat Freddy and @cannabis.pro accidentally brought up a good point... if you want a specific image.. well.. you'll have to print it out yourself and paste it onto a blank sleeve.. cuz' that's a whole can of worms that I'm not jumping into! :worms:

Wow! I'm away from the thread for a few days to return to this. Stunning once again @Dan Morrison Attention to detail as always spot on. Cant wait to get hold of one of these to sit alongside my Okin.

I have no concerns whatsoever about the paper sleeve coming loose. I was an early adopter of an Okin and in all that time never once has it failed, slipped or even remotely come loose. The kraft paper sleeves as Dan has mentioned are extremely robust. Mine has survived a downpour when left outside on a table overnight, a drop from height and various outdoor trips. Looks better than ever with wear.

I do however have a few questions

Are the electrical pathways still going to be brass or was that changed to a silver of some kind? I remember reading about a possible material change somewhere in the thread.

The back side or contact plate to the button will it protrude that far from the body or be more recessed or possibly round in shape to match the lichen button on the opposite side? This is the only thing that I feel very slighty detracts from the overall look of the Nomad. Other than that it is once again a truly beautiful piece of craftmanship.:rockon::love:

Loving the pattern and look on the very first mock up posted. Chiyogami 813.
The papers are things of beauty in themselves. Lovely artwork! Would it be possible for a mock up of this one below please @Dan Morrison

LACQUERED YUZEN - SEIKAIHA RED FULL/HALF SHEET

Colour representation seems to be a way off on thepaperplace site judging by the photos below

The Laquered Yuzen paper also seems to be slightly embossed giving it a raised pattern. This might also aid grip for some people. You can see the embossed texture in the 2 photos below.

I have just read through how the papers are made on the paperplace site and for anyone worried about durability of the sleeve the Katazome-Shi paper sounds the toughest and most suitable if that is bothering anyone, although they seem to be least suited to the aesthetics of the Nomad due to the size of the patterns. I just think the smaller patterned papers would look nicer as you would get to see more of the overall design on the sleeve.

I love so many of these. Still want one with something live in it- there's a dragonfly one in the yuzen page and birds in the others. Live besides or in addition to flowers. Love the flowers too though. I don't think that it's possible to go wrong with any of the designs.
I am pretty slow. Just noticed you can search by pattern- lots of insects and fish and animals. So far the butterflies are my favorite of those

Chiyogami 742 is particularly psychedelic, in a '60's/'70's sort of way.

I think I've already stated it, but so many of these designs deserve to be stared at for great lengths of time. From where I'm standing, the Nomad's aesthetics already give it a competitive advantage in its raw state, so the kraft paper really is the icing on the cake.

I agree with the move, some of the request posts are super long and not interesting until the pattern is on the vape.

Definitely subscribing to this thread, I still have no idea what pattern I want. So many damn amazing options.....
