Daily smokers, why are you still buying China glass?

It's been a while since I've been on FC, but it seems like there is a ton of china glass being used by people who know the superiority of vaporizing, but continue to opt for cheapo glass that is being marked up 10 times what it should.

You smoke every day but don't have nice glass.

American glass is all price ranges. Anywhere from less than $50 to $50,000.

Why not find you something made locally that is pretty dope for a decent price. That up and coming glass artist will remember you if you treat them right.

If you look hard enough you could probably find a nice American made piece for less than that China rig you bought from the local smoke shop.

Is it the concern of breaking your expensive glass? If so, what has caused your glass to get broken in the past?

Most on here buy China glass directly from China through dhgate it is super cheap that way. I really like all the pieces I have from China. To say China glass isn’t good or inferior is a misconception for sure. Yes there is crappy China glass but there is also some really awesome stuff that would cost thousands from an American artist but is only a couple hundred at the most from China.

I guess my issue isn't always the quality, although quality can be an issue.

It's more the sweat shop labor that is the issue, as well as inferior materials.

I recently saw a video of some china spoons that were painted on the inside, causing the paint to melt and off gas when used.

I mean why not support your local or national cannabis movement?

Some rigs I own are 7 years old. To amortize the cost of a $1000 rig over 1 year is $2.74 a day.

Because not everyone here lives in USA and because they help you hide taxes.(unlike US sellers)
Also some countries have incomes similar to the Chinese , minimum wage here is $285/month :D.
Edited:
Also if i remember correctly there was a scandal with Hitman glass i think who sold chinese replicas as his own creations. So i imagine you could never really know if it is US glass for real.

Understandable. I was not considering those outside the US and Canada. Have you considered finding artists locally? People blow glass everywhere.

Well Hitman did that to themselves as far as the China produced rig. They made a design and had items mass produced in China.

You know if it is real you buy from reputable sellers or from the artist directly.

Following artists on instagram, and purchasing directly is an awesome way to ensure you are getting the real deal. They also dont lke to deal with taxes and everything else so its mostly pay pal transactions. I see nice rigs regularly sell for under $300 USD

Almost there...
My take on it is this, glass breaks. I would hate to spend $1000 on something i really liked to only have it broken and not be repairable.
The price of Chinese glass is very attractive for this exact reason to a lot of people.

I saw the video on IG of the China spoon that was painted on the inside...NOT COOL!!!
I love clear glass without any color, I want to see what is happening inside my tube!

That is the exact reason why @Chicken #420 started this thread:
http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/dhgate-aaaaaackkkkk-good-bad-seller-list.25475/

It gives you some peace of mind before buying something from China.

Don't get me wrong, I love locally blown glass but I cannot afford to drop that much money each time I want a new piece. My daily Driver is a RooR tube that is absolutely perfect for me!
I have a few IG glass pieces but they sit in a box due to me not liking their performance, hit and miss.
I also find that most glass blowers are doing smaller rigs for concentrates mainly or bubble caps, stuff they make in large quantities and then have a drop sale. I am not wanting to sit at my PC and wait for the drop and hope I get something and I am not doing the bidding war of $10 to $50 increments for bids!

So to sum up, I prefer to spend $40 on a bong and if I don't like it, no sweat at all!
Buying a $1000 rig and not liking it and then battling to recoup my money is way too much hassle!
Everyone has their own preference when it comes to buying glass!

I agree with @lazylathe !

When I got into Glass after many years of only liking ZIG ZAG's.

When I got into GLASS WATER PIPE'S I had them made locally here in CALIFORNIA.

$1'000 spent and broke the first day?

CHEAP GLASS makes sense to me?

I am going to get a coojo dounut rig pretty soon

Really like that also. Any idea of the general price range of this type of rig from him.

I also have some American glass, four pieces actually. Lot of money(!), at least one piece is definitely NOT worth the money IMO.

I also have DHGate glass because its cheap, works, I don't find issues with the quality, and for general workman like glass (like the FC-187 vs Mobius Ion) its quite suitable for a modest price.

Sure its to be considered art etc
Thats why i think those expensive pieces belongs with glass collectors and the likes

For me however since i only own glass to get me medicated im all about the best function at minimum cost

I've got the glass bug pretty bad and have played the amortization game as well.
Prior to FuckingCombustion I smoked out of dirty, oily, resin-filled spoons that I would just as likely throw away rather than clean after packing them with resin. GAH!

Had my ACL reconstructed and became more familiar with concentrates, but just vape pens and some crumble or shatter on top of burnt bowls (see oily spoon reference above).
Moved up to a Nectar Collector.
Then I decided to buy some glass for home remember thinking to myself "$100, that's the limit".
Started surfing and found some really nice looking glass from some freakaziods going by the name of MotherShip and saw the prices and was like HolyFuckingShit!?!

Got a MS Mini knockoff from DHGate, sold it to a friend. (bought for $50, sold for $50 shipped)

wh8Wa4m.jpg

Bought a Double Domer copy via boromarket (American), sold to another friend. (bought for $100, sold for $80).

vM203ue.jpg

Another FC member dubbed that one the "Cock-and-Balls".
I was initially confused, but then took a closer look.

Then got the sickness bad and got bit by a piece way of my price range, but couldn't get that thing out of my head; ended up buying it and using it daily for a couple of years (great piece; Locally blown).
Then traded it for a Hex-Nail + extra coils ($700 purchase, ~$500 trade; super great controller).

eIdlfsc.jpg

picked up a travel recycler from the same local blower:

kzr0yTb.jpg

Daily use for a couple of years, then I left it in the car, filled with water, during a hard freeze (got down to ~10*F); shattered the bottom (nearest two bottom bubs in the pic).
I'm still salty about this and it happened ~6 months ago.
I hate being fucking stupid!
I picked it up artist direct (his shopmate actually) for $250, now they're going for $450-$550 (ARGHH!!)
OG blower doesn't think he can fix it, I may have tracked someone down willing to give it a shot.

Got enamored by the crazy six shooter gill perc on this Canadian piece:

EJKW3pg.jpg

Had it for year.
It competed for daily driver status (in for $600 out for $400).

Then this:

MB1lQxc.jpg

and this:

qEWGIKn.jpg

Both from Tony Hernandez direct and hideously expensive (at least for me).
Still have both of them, although one should probably be going.
As a daily dabberI love the functionality and aesthetics of my glass.

TL/DR: It seems that glass holds it's value to a certain extant.
And if you amortize, that will help you justify your purchases.

:D

... AND don't, don't, don't leave water in any travel piece during the winter (or ever, just don't do it!).

...And, where people are sourcing their glass is obviously up to them and there are many variables that influence one's decision, just be safe (I love window shopping on IG).

When you spend $300 on cannabis related hardware and it breaks, you begin to lose trust, in either yourself or the product. Cheap glass is like mcdonalds, it gets the job done, it may not be what you really want, but it's something and that's better than nothing. If you think its not then try living with nothing for a while and let me know how that goes =)

The Chinese glass I've ordered from china through DHGate is all clear. I shy away from color on cheap glass.

Also, not everyone can afford to spend hundreds of dollars on glass. We're sometimes lucky we can afford cannabis at all.

I needed a basic oil rig, and picked up one of these for $5 with a coupon:
bong-glass-smoking-pipes-different-color-recycler-and-percolator-dab-rig-factory-direct-sales-glass-water-pipes.jpg

Here's a function video (created by someone else with an identical model): https://streamable.com/33qvw
(sorry, as I couldn't figure out how to embed the video)

I put a $13 drop-down on it from TAG, and It does what it's supposed to do just fine.

I'd like to bring money to local artists when I can afford it. But I can't often afford it. If I could, I would...because good glass doesn't break so easily.
But I have to make my money stretch as far as it can sometimes.

Canada? Please do tell. Everything that I see from Planetvape is from China. If there are any affordable Canadian glass blowers that can match the quality and price from China, i'm all ears! Pretty sure all the head shops do here is RESELL China glass at ABSURD markups.

I like how you didnt consider there was people from other places than US / Canada , lol :p

You didn't know that the US/Canada was the centre of the universe?? :hmm::p

In France (and in Europe for what I saw), the "culture of the water pipe" is almost non-existent, Same for concentrates, it's less generalized.
The main mode of consumption remains the joint.
There is therefore much less offer, not to mention the price.

Fuck China glass. Fair enough if you're clumsy and break stuff, just try to be a bit more careful instead.

Personally ill always try to buy and support local if at all possible. Even here in the UK i can get a locally made rig, super thick and durable for under a 100.

Some of people here have multiple China rigs when they could have one modest locally made one, that i don't understand?

I do find it a bit ironic that it's always "cheap china" glass, and the critique lays on those who are spending too little on their glass. Nobody ever seems to care if someone spends their entire savings account on a piece of glass. I'm guessing "overpriced" is not part of the vernacular? Oh, perhaps this is not even a consideration on our dear special glass pieces! I guess when it comes to custom or small batch pieces, nobody gives a damn about the price.

Well that's a rude thing to say, even tho i use china glass i do not go out and say fuck american glass.

The way i see it this boat is big enough for all of us, and no one should have to "Try and be more careful" if that's not their thing.

Anyways,

I use glass like a worktool, being careful, what a buzzkill

Choices in vape gear usually comes down to personal preferences and situations so everybody gets to have what pieces they want for whatever reasons they have and they are all right. Welcome to the board by the way and I hope you enjoy it.
