I love the brown! When are we going to be able to 3d print leather?
Evening all!
I wanted to share with you a special project I've been working on. It's not quite finished but I could really use some feedback.
Ever since seeing the Grasshopper Vape, I KNEW I wanted to own a sexy leather case to hold the vape + essential accessories. After looking around, I couldn't quite find a Pen case to fit my needs (natch). So I managed to find a local leathermaker who is able to handcraft these leather cases for me using real American (Amish) leather! This guy is old school, but his quality is top notch, I was REALLY impressed with his leatherwork so much, I've decided to start stocking these cases on my store.
Here's a prototype of the case:
There's one slot for the vape, and three slots for batteries (or a special tube for herbs, which will be included free with each case), plus 1 large slot for oversized tubes (although I might split that pocket and make them two equal sized slots), and one mini slot between the two batteries to hold a poker tool for breaking up the ABV (which may be necessary for emptying the hopper depending on your herb)
We're tweaking some of the fittings (1/8th inch adjustments here and there, and swapping the larger pocket from the top to the bottom and swapping the pockets on top/bottom. But this is close to the finished product.
This guy does everything by hand, so changing designs takes a long time, I'm trying to finalize this before I order my first batch.
Also what are your thoughts on color? I know black is a popular color, but how does brown look on the inside or should I get Black on Black? I can order several different color configurations if you want (including orange and purple if you want some crazy colors!).
I like the snaps anyway, but magnets could potentially interact with the hopper in ways you don't wantLove the leather case. I haven't read through the whole thread, so maybe this has been suggested, but have you thought about using magnets (instead of poppers or a tie)?
That's a good idea, I'll have to see if he has any magnets to play withLove the leather case. I haven't read through the whole thread, so maybe this has been suggested, but have you thought about using magnets (instead of poppers or a tie)?
Ya know, I thought about that too. But indeed with 3 batteries and a doob tube of herb, I don't think you'll need the charging cable for a whole day/two of heavy use.I like it. I'd get one. My first reaction was where does the charging cable go...but looks like this case is more designed to swap batteries on the go. As a travel case I think I'd still try to cram the charging cable in somehow.
@Ratchett, regarding design thoughts can I add that I think adding space for the charging cable would make this too bulky. Like you, I'd prefer something with a slim, low profile. That's why I think the prototype you pictured looks great.
Can I suggest a separate small case just for the charger (and anything else one might need for the gh but not want or need to carry in your design)? It could just be a small rectangle with a fold over flap and snap (or magnet).
Regarding a bigger 2-pen case, that doesn't suit my needs but others may want it.I agree.
What are everyone's thoughts on making a bigger 2-pen case with space for a cable charger?
Hoping my case of Doob-Tubes arrives this weekend so I can test the fit of them in the battery slots and finalize this case so I can order my first batch.
Based ont he feedback here and in PM's, it sounds like a majority of people really dig the Black/Brown combination (my favorite as well). So I'll probably make half of my initial order that color configuration.
For other colors combinations such as Black/Red, Black/Black, and Gray/Orange - PLEASE send me a PM with your email address and what color you want. I'll add your name to a list and will send you an email when they are available.
I'm also very excited to announce a new raw material and a new product on my store this weekend, stay tuned for big news!
I agree.

So it will be able to hold 3 extra batteries regardless? Plus a doob tube? So like 4 battery slots really if the doob tube can fit in the same size? Then that extra pocket can hold the session extender, or a tool, or another wider container (perfect for avb, since doobtube is good to load Hopper).
Well there are 3 slots for batteries, plus the battery in the vaporizer. So my thought is you have two slots for the batteries, and one slot for the Doob Tube. That'd mean you could carry 3 batteries + Doob tube + wider slot for wahtever else you want.
The poking tool can be stored in a tiny slot between the two batteries.
Once I have the doob tubes and the finished case, I'll get a "fully loaded" picture for the store listings.
I'll start thinking about the larger version of the case, but this guy works SLOW when making new designs, so I'm going to finalize this one first before moving on to the next case design
An outside pocket wouldn't add much bulk at all, especially if it's not being used to optionally store the cable. It's just the thickness of a single piece of leather. And then you don't need a "separate small case"@Ratchett, regarding design thoughts can I add that I think adding space for the charging cable would make this too bulky.
