I read somewhere that it starts evaporating at - 175f, will probably take weeks though. I actually did it today, two runs, both times the liquid looks lovely. Hope it works.
Without heat, it will not fully purge. You MUST get the surface of your solution being purged to be in a liquid phase. If it is not liquid, then the lower boiling compounds (ie: solvent) left in your material will not be able to escape it's prison trapped inside the much more viscous and higher boiling resin which is not yet hot/liquid enough for the solvent to escape!I read somewhere that it starts evaporating at - 175f, will probably take weeks though. Can someone with a little more experience than me compare winterized and nonwinterized bho? Really asking about taste more than anything. Id never had any that was winterized until just recently. I like how smooth and clean it is but I csnt get by the taste, or lack there of. Is there anyway to help this or is it just the nature of the beast/flavor is in the fat kind of thing? Thx.
Thanks! I would bet I'm doing something wrong. My winterized bho tastes almost lime a co2 dist. In the way that there is ZERO taste. Very smooth, very pretty stuff. It's just not getting any of the flavor my normal bho has.Well, winterizing BHO is essentially re-dissolving it in another solvent, sometimes ethyl alcohol, and re-purging it. This removes a lot of the remaining plant lipids and any residual butane that may be left from an under-purging. This is what makes it so smooth and so clean. As far as flavor, I'm sure you're bound to lose some terps, but I wouldn't say that a lot of the winterized concentrates I've had lack flavor necessarily. I mean you could always add your own terps back in, but that's really expensive, and something that's typically only done for distillate, which is incredibly flavorless, due to the fact there are virtually zero terpines in it at all.

@sickmanfraud I am preaching safety here, and no, do not ever vent flammable effluent into an enclosed cupboard! You need good ventilation when dealing with anything flammable, including ethanol.@sickmanfraud I would be careful evaporating ethanol in an enclosed space.
I used to use a ban marie type set up to boil off butane, no reason why you can use the same method to alcohol.
Always outside using kettles of boiling water to keep a good boil going.
It'll take a bit longer with ethanol, quicker and safer than in a cupboard.
Not preaching safety and it's each to there own but we are talking highly flammable substances and in the case of alcohol a barely visible flame.
I have zero knowledge of concentrates but I would like to learn.
Do I have to read the whole thread to follow what is going on?
When I send folks to PsychedelicSam's tincture thread I tell them to read the first few pages to understand the technique (Freezer method) and then the most recent few pages and at that point to find something in the index that is interesting to you.
Is there any index? recipes?
Thanks
I'm hoping someone can answer or link if there is already a discussion... @herbivore21 maybe??
Roughly how much dry herb does it take to make 1gr of shatter?
Ime up to 25% or so, but realistically between 4-10g of flower per g of rosin depending on flower quality/resin coverageI'm hoping someone can answer or link if there is already a discussion... @herbivore21 maybe??

Pretty new to concentrates, when vaping wax, is it supposed to be a fairly small, inhalable hit, and then around 2 mins of burn off? Or did i get horribly tainted stuff? When Evaporated on aluminum foil, a small quantity of black/burnt residue remains, which however still smells like the product, unlike similar contaminations in hash, slight sizzle when heated but no sparks or splutters.
Using Evo with VXN.
It sounds to me as if your wax is well purged, if it isn't sparking or sputtering at all, a sizzle isn't good but I imagine telling you to get better wax is, well, not productive for your ends. I wouldn't suggest using aluminum foil at all, especially in your vape. My preferred method of vaping concentrates rather than dabbing them directly, is to take a small bit of cotton and place it in there, then set my vape to about a 7-8 for the e-nano, you'll want it a bit higher than for herb in order to vaporize it properly. The temperature in your vape should be well below cotton's combustion temp, and well over what it takes to vaporize your wax. I'm not entirely sure what you're referring to by burn-off, though.
Thats my normal results. Best press was 1.2 gs of rosin from 4.5 bud.Ime up to 25% or so, but realistically between 4-10g of flower per g of rosin depending on flower quality/resin coverage
