Is George Soros a pothead?

According to this he "sunk millions into the Washington and Colorado campaigns"!

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articl...marijuana-initiatives-pass-in-two-states.html

I know he's a liberal, but it seems to me there would be few non-users who would feel so strongly about the issue of legalisation.

I don't know if we can conclusively state anything, but as a private (and public) equity trader, aspiring hedge fund manager, and HUGE Soros fan (for real he's in the top 3 fave hedge fund managers/heroes), I am SO happy you posted this article.
You don't know how big of a smile it brought to my face to see one of my trading heroes be so heavily involved in this. :luv:
This gives me hope to still become a big-shot like Soros or Paul Tutor Jones or Ray Dalio but still remember what's important.
It gives me motivation to keep at it.

Thank you, yelooo.

Although I am curious as to how you can flower 3 plants at once but only possess an ounce
here in the netherlands we have the same situation, you are allowed to posses 15 grams(at home, 5 grams is the limit for what you can have on you in public), but 5 plantts, wich ofcourse can yield a lot more, especially outdoor. there was a case some time back where police had prosecuted someone who had more then 15 grams, in the form of selfgrown plants that were harvested and were drying. in that case the judge decided that as long as it's clear that it comes from your 5 tolerated plants, you can have an unlimited amount at home without being punishable.

Now that the vapor clouds and smoke clouds have dispersed a bit from all the celebrating i have to wonder........ I am very happy for the two states but i am SURE the federal government is not. What is going to happen when the feds decide to trump the states rights with its own federal rights?? whats going to happen when the federal government decides to say "well we are going to withhold (xxx) of federal funding that usually goes to your state until you repeal that amendment". don't think it can happen??? the federal government used tactics like that to get the states to make 55 the national speed limit (i know this has changed some but is just an example) and to make 21 the legal drinking age.

seriously i hope the states figure out a way to combat this so that the federal government is happy too. if they find a way to make both sides happy... i can see this passing in more states than just colorado and washington

Although, not a trader (though I am working on an algorithm for forex trading) I am a Soros fan too. Its really comforting to know that not all "masters of the universe" are without compassion for their fellow man.

I think George Soros is a modern day Andrew Carnegie. In fact I think a lot of really succesfull, rich people would do well to follow Carnegie's example and try to make a difference in the world with their money.

Hey, man, I 100% agree. Hell, I've read Carnegie's (well technically Napoleon Hill's...) Think and Grow Rich about a dozen times now. I honestly don't think there are rich people out there that haven't absorbed Carnegie's formula from this book in one way, shape, or form. But it is the truly wealthy that understand Carnegie's final lesson, and that is to return to the world what has been given to you.

EA Trader, huh? I follow in the footsteps of my heroes (Soros and PTJ), so I use more of a Global Macro, Market Sentiment, Expectations, Scenario Analysis, Order Flow kind of deal. But I do specialize in forex!

It may just be rattling the cage but it's a step forward, telling our gov. we want our freedom. I am curious to watch this unfold and to also see how it effects OR. We can not ignore the fact that not only will people in OR be driving to WA for bud (once shops go up) but so will OR $$.... so that won't last too long I can promise you that.

I thought about that too as a former Portland(ish), OR resident; Vancouver, WA is practically a hop skip and a jump from that MAJOR metropolitan area (Hillsboro, Beaverton, Gresham, etc).

He is by no means the only one in this situation. This is why we need to push our government for change.

Upon further review.
Colorado: Awesome, a step in the right direction, a big leap perhaps.

Washington: What the fuck? Legalizing posession, but not use? Um, sure.
It seems a little criminal that a state would stop this short of the full thing.

It would stand to reason that if you "possessed" it, you would be "using" it.

The Washington law is actually rather badly flawed, but it may be possible to work out the bugs. Unfortunately some individuals may fall victim in the process. The part I particularly object to is you are not allowed to cultivate your own cannabis; you have to get it from a state monopoly store. Sigh. Seems so unnecessary and tamps down economic activity as well as healthful competition. But it's ok. The states will function as laboratories and iron out some of the kinks.

Washington, eh but it has potential. I dont see the consumption thing being that big of a deal, even if you had just been smoking in your house/apt couldnt you just say you were burning itas incense because you like the smell?

Also, while itll probably contribute to higher prices, i read that washington willbe taxing it 3x at 20-30% each time.
(ie. grower to distributer 20-30%, distributer to store 20-30%, and store to customer 20-30%)
Which means by the time you buy it, the prices could be through the roof. However the reason it passed was to help reduce other taxes and with all the potential tax revenue fro, the 3x tax thats a lot of extra money. The reduced other taxes in washington could be a big factor in helping influence other states pass similiar ammendments.

That is if the federal government allows it.

What amount did you read they will be taxing? 20-30% of what?

Current medical bud in CO is charged sales tax; 8.21% here in Boulder county. I'd imagine legal bud will be taxed similar, otherwise a pot store will have a hard time staying in business.

fuck washington. I find it silly that the DPA would proclaim this a "victory".

Well, if anything, Washington having some form of regulation is just fuel for Canada to push on their gov. and the other west coast states to push legalization even harder. Right now it just seems like spit balls being shot at the Feds, but at this point we need change, so even if it's not perfect in the beginning it's still change. Ultimately, I would prefer we could all just have free access, as we do with any of the other seed bearing plants on this planet. Sure you can buy/sell them, but you can also propagate your own, and continue with out much cost if you so choose, but this is obviously too simple of a concept for today's world which has to complicate and regulate everything. Only time will tell how this will unfold.
