Chest pain from dry herb vaping?

Hey everyone,
I just started having an issue yesterday. I woke up with some severw chest muscle pain and it didnt go away all day. In fact, as the day progresssed, lifting my arm started to make my chest hurt lol which ofc sucks bad as I need my arm fairly often lol

I'm fairly sure I already know the cause from reading up on other threads on the forum, but figured I would post anyways and request some help. I think I use too much suction while vaping. I think the restriction is too high for what my chest likes atm.

I use a 2021 AzuriuM thrugh a bong (stereo matrix, chinese mobius). I thought i may be packing too tight as I recently went from sraw packing to finger packing as I was getting a lot of flower material in my bong. I cant afford better gear so the grinder i already had from while I smoked is the same one I use for vaping and I think it's making the weed brak up too small. But thats a whole other issue lol

So, when I woke up Saturday (June 25, 2022) my chest was sore, but not too bad. As the day progressed it got worse. It was the worst after my only vape session yesterday, which hurt so much i had to lie down. I was scared that somethijg was seriously wrong until i started reading about other people having issues similar, but not quite the same.

I also like to hold my tokes in for 3-5 secs after. Bad habits from smoking die hard lol not sure what plays a part so I'm trying to add as much info as I can think. Will add more if I left anything out, just let me know lol oh, i also use a FMJ and hold for 3-4 secs past the click so i can get the heavy effects... so there's quite a bit that could be potentially playing a part in my chest pain...

Am I on the right path thinking its the restriction or temp of my vaping leading to my chest pains? Also cough a bit too lol

Thanks in advance and i hope I posted this in the correct place.

I think there's a chance you have pulled a muscle or strained something else, either from coughing or from the action and deep draws on the bong.
I think high temps can be harsh and irritating, maybe bring on the cough, but not the chest pain itself?

I don't want to be an alarmist, but I will tell a quick story.
Twelve years ago I had pneumonia, then afterwards saw a pulmonary specialist for some tests.
As part of the interview I told him I had just quit cigarettes and was still smoking cannabis (wasn't a vaper yet!). He went straight to asking whether I used a bong, which I did not, and he cautioned that he had seen at least one case of an exploded lung, involving bong use.
I filed that under FWIW.

Hope your issue resolves. Try a little moderation in your technique?

Thanks! I have been playing around with my technique a bit, but have to wait for the pain to go down before i start to indulge again. It really effin hurts lol very much feels like muscle pain, but also hurts in my lungs a little during deep inhale so that's why i questioned the temperature aspect of things too.

The idea of a lung blowing out due to bong use is scary as heck. I have asthma already so yeah, very scary idea lol def not what I'm feeling though as its about 90% muscles around my left pec and center chest area.

Still, figured I would ask lol thank you very much for the quick reply.

I definitely was choking a lot the day before this started. So i think you're right that its muscles too. But if it keeps going past tuesday (figure thats enough time for the muscle to start healing) then I will go see my nurse practitioner. Thanks!

Hiya, yeah I don't often use the glass adaptors for Dynavap tips anymore because of the pains it was causing my chest with the restrictive draw. With freer flowing inhales I've found it goes away within a couple of days. I've noticed that with almost all vapes I use now I allow some fresh air through my lips whilst drawing vapour, to avoid the straining.

A friend has similar issue and it went away by him switching to more open airflow vaporizer. Dynavaps restricted airflow make my lungs hur, too. Also maybe you can consider deep cleaning your tip and cap , cause if there is a build up of polymerized oils, it also might be adding to a discomfort.
I advise taking a break until problem goes away, should be a couple of days, then try an open airflow vaporizer, especially for water use...

Thank you! Was hoping that it would go away in a couple days lol always was hoping i was right that it was the restriction. Because of my asthma, i have to use a bong. It chokes me out way too much natively, unfortunately. Also, I'm on Ontario Works (our version of Welfare) while fighting an appeal for ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program) so a different vape isn't an option. I have an Air2 but my tolerance was too high for it from the start so it's sat in its box since @Bad Dog sent me the Dynavap and bong.

@Abysmal Vapor heya, just wanted to add that I clean my tip and cap every couple days regardless of usage amounts :) the smell that builds up is too much for me otherwise lol also, I don't have the means to use another vaporizer atm as my financials are too thin. I have an Air2 that I bought as my first dry herb vape, but my tolerance was too high to feel anything from it. I'll try going back to straw loading to see if that helps. Also, i found that if i put a couple books under my bong and lift it close to my mouth, so that i dont bend too far forward, it helps for some reason lol not sure why, just thought i would mention it in case someone else might know the reason lol :)

Thank you both for your answers!

I have asthma as well, and I eventually developed lung issues after vaping.

My issues resolved after switching over to edibles. My weed goes further now and I feel better.

At first my vaping went through a progression of lower temps, warmed bong water, and different vapes. They all helped but didn't solve my issues.

I missed vaping when I stopped but I don't even think about it now. It helps that I have a lot of edible options.

I JUST made the switch from smoking weed to vaping about 3 months ago, maybe 4. Started with the Air2 but never felt anything more than lightheaded from it lol then a buddy I met on here sent me the DV and bong, as he knew the DV would be too much on its own as I have asthma lol just don't think either of us thought that chest pains would happen lol i definitely notice it gets worse when i suck on a straw, or vape my nic vape stuff (been vaping nicotine for a good year and a half already. Much better on my lungs than smoking was, thats for sure!) If i have my airflow set low. In a day or 2 after the most of the muscle pains subside, I'll play around with things more. I don't have access to affordable edibles unfortunately. I would try them if i did, but they're like $30 for 500mg gummies here. And since I'm on social assistance, it's not the easiest thing get. My weed is cheap due to the grey/black market in Canada, but the edibles haven't caught up to the price decreases that the dry herb and concentrates got recently lol

Thanks for the idea though. If they become easier to find at a more affordable price, I'll be sure to dive in :)

You can't make your own edibles? Getting the weed is the hard part. The other stuff isn't expensive and mostly foods you likely have already.

I can if i can find enough herb cheap enough. Atm, i barely have enough to vape lol money that is. I have a half oz here waiting on my chest pain to eff off lol but, since money is tight and hard to come by, i would rather keep what i have for vaping once my chest gets a bit better.

I was advised to play with the airport of my dyna while its on my bong and see if i can have the port open a bit so that the pressure on my draw is lessened. I'll try this once I can handle the straw like action of vaping my dyna again. Probably tomorrow as my pec hurts like a mamma jamma lol

I wouldn't use hard suction on a Dynavap as long as the air port is shut (at least not when using natively, haven't tried a DV & bong combo yet). People are often a bit skeptical about leaving it fully open, but it actually does work very well, so maybe give that a try – you won't have instant vapor, but it only takes a few seconds (maybe 5 or so) to start. If that doesn't work out, try shutting the air port for the first couple of seconds, then leave it open. And yeah, a fluffy pack with a coarse grind will help too.

A fully shut air port does work well when you do the typical mouth to lung kinda draw. Most people will vary the amount of air by fluttering the air port or leaving it half open at the start of the draw, then shut it fully at the end. Or vice versa. Many options.

One thing though: I wouldn't ask for medical help online – chest pain can mean a million things that may or may not have anything to do with you vaping at all. I would totally ask a doctor about your symptoms.

I need to invest in a grinder that does medium and coarse grinds. My budget doesnt allow me to get those expensive grinders, but my cheapo Genie one is crap lol had it since i was a teenager. 35 now for reference lol

When using the dyna natively i keep the airport open so i can rock the rocker. When on the bong, i usually keep a piece of tubing over the port so that I get the hardest hits. Was told earlier to play with the airport while the dyna is attached to the bong. Apparently that might help with the suction. I'm hopeful, anyway lol

I wasn't asking for medical advice, more asking if others have felt this muscle pains from the suction. I definitely know to seek medical help if its serious. I dont deem this serious though as its only a muscle thing. If it was more internal, like lungs, i wouldn't have posted. I wouldv'e gone straiht to the hospital lol :)

Thanks for the concern though. It's muchly appreciated. I was posting mainly to see if this is a relatively common occurance with DV's on water pieces and if anyone has had this, what inhaling techniques helped get them past it. :)

Edit: So, I decided to try using the Dyna native and with much more air. It helped A LOT! My chest still hurts from yesterdays dyna/bong session, but it didnt aggrivate it much more by vaping natively. It's much harsher, but it doesnt seem to hurt it much. I cough a bit, but i was coughing with the bong anyway lol just felt I should update with the somewhat positive results :)
