Cannaoil abv question

Hey all! Hope all is well. About a month ago I made some cannaoil for the first time, and I used about five ounces of abv to about 500 mL of coconut oil. First off Im wondering if this seems like a good enough amount for some potent oil. Most of the abv had some green left in it and was not heavily vaped at all because I had saved it for the purpose of making edibles because I have never experienced an edible high before. The reason I'm asking this is because I had a quite bizarre experience after taking 3 tablespoons by them-self with some popcorn I had been munching on for the past hour or so because I read that the first pass system breaks down a lot of usable thc and technically wastes some. Anyways, I took those spoons at 8 pm and waited a good two hours before hitting the vape because I wanted to experience the edible high without the vape affecting my judgment. 2 hours pass and I'm feeling no different, aside from burping up nasty tasting oil breath every 15 minutes or so.... I proceed to hit up the vape and pass out by 2 feeling like I was having a normal vape high and burnout, and then, all of a sudden, BAM! I wake up, the rooms spinning, I dont know whats going on at first, just scared staring straight into the darkness ahead, neck jerked forward and back jolted upright. I feel nauseous and like Im falling backwards.... I look at the time, its 6 am I think. Very trippy experience for me and I'm curious if anyone else has had a similar experience. Doing the math, the edible high took at least 6 hours to kick in, assuming it started kicking in around when I went to sleep for the night. I've never felt like this from weed before, and partially felt like I was convincing myself I was tripping out when I wasnt... but I definitely was ahahahah. Any insight is appreciated, I'd love to hear from you guys, very curious on this subject. I have yet to try any more of my oil but I have lots left :)

ABV has a much higher CBD to THC ratio.

this post from a CBD tincture thread could explain it
The folks selling the tincture told me that if you take the CBD before you vape it'll make the high more intense and stronger. They say taking it after vaping will calm it down and cancel some of the THC effects.

Definitely more CBDs in ABV. We've already vaped out the THC. IME straight ABV gives a real dopey buzz. I think because we already took the high end off the weed, and that's all that's left. I usually try to mix mine 1/2 & 1/2 with fresh herb - even if just shake or trim - when making butter or oil. Still a little dopey, but not nearly as bad.

As for the 6 hours... could be a number of things, but IME it helps to eat something WITH the oil (or butter). Put it on or in something else. (like brownies, but cook lower temps). Usually it starts coming on 1/2 hour - 45 mins, and full on by 1 1/2 hours. Lasts 4 - 6 hours. But, you can tweak it by eating regular food. Starches seem to chill the buzz a little. Proteins and sugars seem to bump it back up. I like to mix the 2, so eat something like a big PB&J sandwich a few hours in. YMMV

I find that abv oil doesnt really give me a decent high, but it gives me a mellow buzz for quite a while. It also helps me sleep better than prescription sleeping meds!

Thanks for the input man! Bring on the comments lol. Tried making a firecracker the other night with 1.3 gs of fresh bud and it only had me slightly buzzed for an hour or two. Barely noticeable I was disappointed. Does this sound like a fairly potent dose? Made two on graham crackers with busted bud spread out evenly on nutella and sandwiched with another cracker, and then wrapped that up in tin foil and put it in the oven on 320 for 20 mins...

I tend to vape my weed fairly fully but the other day I consumed 5 grams of ABV at once in a milkshake.

I don't doubt there's some first-pass effect going on with edibles, but IME it's not always necessary. In the case of the milkshake, I was feeling it within 20 minutes and I had not eaten before.

Within a few hours I was extremely high, and not just CBDs. So yes it did have the heavy body effects, but definitely a tinge of trippiness like you described (presumably from thc residuals in the ABV) It lasted all night and then I fell asleep for 12 hours.

When I made this milkshake, I had mixed up the ABV with peanutbutter and microwaved on medium for only 2 minutes.

Thanks man! Sounds like a fun time. My vaped bud has a decent amount of green left!

I was going to use 4 gs of fresh bud and match that with the alcohol is that a good idea? Thanks all! :) happy tokin

The same exact thing has happened to me on multiple occasion and I never knew why, but thanks to this lovely forum I have an answer. When making cannaoil with avb does mixing in some regular bud counteract this problem?

I've found it does make it smoother and not quite as "dopey", but it's tough to set a definite recipe - even for myself after doing it more than a half dozen times with ABV. Depends on what you vaped, how much you vaped it, what your non-vaped material is like and probably a few other things.

I guess it could be an exact science with a good bit of experimentation and more data collection than I feel is worth it. My work around is to make a pretty good sized batch of butter or oil with about 2/3 ABV and 1/3 shake or trim. Sometimes it's closer to 1/2 & 1/2 depending on how it works out with ingredients. I make cookies, or brownies or whatever and eat one for a test run. Sometimes, just butter up a toasted bagel. Then I kind of have a feel for potency and type of buzz to expect before I use it or share. I find better to do that than eat a couple brownies before going to a concert or something and wishing I ate more - or sometimes even worse - wishing I ate less!

Personally, I think the water/butter method is easiest to do in the long run and best, but oil can be easier for a recipe (like brownies). I generally do oil for smaller batches and use it up pretty fast. Butter I feel like I can keep a little longer and have had no probs with spoilage or loss of efficiency (not noticeable, anyway) after up to 2 months. If you do the water method, you're pretty much left with clarified butter (or ghee in Asian cooking). In many parts of the world, people don't even refrigerate it - but I always do.

Thanks flotntoke, I normally cook my avb with the double boiler method using coconut oil. Maybe I will give the boiling water and butter method to see if it will have a different result.

Oil Painter
One can of coconut milk (full-fat)
Two grams of ABV
Heat together until simmery
Three tablespoons Dark Cocoa Powder (I use an Equal Exchange/Fair Trade one) - unsweetened. This is not hot cocoa mix.
About 4 tablespoons of honey.
Hefty sprinkle of Ceylon Cinnamon (just plain old Cinnamon will work, of course)
One tablespoon of unflavored gelatin (totally optional, I was looking for a particular nutritional benefit)

Put it all in the blender - blend until smooth.

Made two 10oz servings of fudgy tasting goodness. It hasn't quite hit me yet, but I'm expecting AMAZING pain relief and deep sleep tonight.

Sorry, Dude. Lost track of this thread for a few weeks. Have only done the GD once myself and that was with fresh trimmings. Was OK I guess, but I like to keep my meds & booze separate for proper dosages of each. There's some good info on FC, but don't know if mixing fresh with ABV has come up.

Let us know how you do!
