Cannabis Cooking Questions

Got about 1.5 oz of ABV in a crock pot right now (with about 14oz of coconut oil) and wanted some clarification on a few things.

1. Straining. I know you can use cheese cloth, clean t-shirt, pantyhose, and more to strain, but is there any reason to use cheesecloth over a shirt? Seems like an extra expense you dont NEED to take?

2. It's on low, so is there ever a reason to take the lid off and give it a quick stir after a while? My oil seems pretty heavily saturated so I feel like it should be..

3. Time. Since ABV is already decarboxylated, is there any benefit to keeping the heat on for more than few hours realistically?

As far as what the cannaoil is going to be used for, how do Maple White Chocolate Chip ABV Brownies sound? :brow:

SD, I also have a lot of vape-poo to get rid of and I was also thinking about a coconut oil extraction since I am getting ready to make some hash caps soon anyways. ABV is definitely decarbed so you could just eat it if you wanted to and it would work. For straining, cheesecloth, t-shirt, its the physical process thats important. I have an old, gold, coffee filter that I plan to use. If your material is up to the task the next consideration would be toxicity, if your good on both then plan the next step.

If you were to use a shirt, you would really never be able to wear the shirt again, whereas you would only need about $1 worth of cheesecloth to strain that amount of ABV. So unless you are buying t-shirts for less than $1, it seems the cheesecloth is the less expensive option.

As long as the consistency is liquid enough, the convection going on inside will eliminate the need for stirring.

That is a good question; I hope somebody here knows enough to comment on it.

Sounds delicious! I assume the white chocolate is just in the chips, and that you will be using regular cacao for the brownies?

I think the leaving of the mixture on for an extended period of time is more of a 'feel good' motion. As long as you dont go over a temp that will destroy your actives, leaving it on longer would be better than leaving it on not long enough. (IMO)

Your recipe sounds good and tasty - hopefully the 'Earthy' flavor imparted on your cocoghee wont be too strong. Personally, I have had much success with using Creme De Menthe chips in my brownies/edibles - they more than do the trick with a recipe that DOESNT strain out the ABV :)

Take that for what its worth :ko:

toxicity? :hmm:

Well . . . if you have to use a t-shirt, or something else, there might be dye or silkscreen paints or who knows what else on the fabric you are being forced to use to strain. I was merely pointing this out.

For those that are really into cooking with and without ABV, you can get a Chinois and Pestle to filter out the butter from the ABV. This is what I use. I then strain that butter through a gold coffee filter. I find that I "lose" less butter this way instead of using cheesecloth or a T-shirt. They soak the butter up and I can never get all out.

The price is high but the quality is top shelf and as I said earlier, if you are into cooking food, it can have a whole lot of different uses for you. I've owned mine for over 10 years.

The Chinois and Pestle looks PERFECT for making cannabutter/oil
Great tip

Thanks but I must give credit where credit is due. My wife is the cook in the house (her second career would have been a chef) and it was her idea to use the Chinois to filter the butter. All props go to her :)

MY :2c:
1. I always use an old tee clean 100% cotton tee shirt for straining. we always seem to have a few holy ones around that would otherwise be thrown out, but will work for straining herbal materials out and can then be composted. cheesecloth also has a tendency to burst with the pressure being used to squeeze all the drops of goodness out. if you pick the right piece of tee shirt, it's less likely to explode and coat your kitchen with canna infused goodness. i know this from experience :) dipping the shirt piece in some un infused liquid medium can prevent the cloth from absorbing some of the precious infused oil. a chinois is vastly a better choice, but i don't have one to use and i'm cheap so shirts it is for almost all of my herbal infusion straining.

2. when infusing any herb into any liquid, with or without heat, some agitation is needed just to make sure that the actives infuse evenly into the carrier liquid. I say stir it and get the lid back on quickly so you don't release too many of the actives into the air.

3. IMO, Since the ABV is already decarboxylated, no more than a few hours is strictly needed in the crock-pot.

the brownies sound delicious! how did they end up?

Ended up making cookies with organic maple syrup (extra dark), white chocolate chips, brown sugar, and ABV coconut oil.

The white chocolate chips do an EXCELLENT job covering up the ABV taste, even with the coconut oil being especially bad tasting since I left it cooking for many hours.

Highly recommend.

Heres the solid coconut oil melting down changing from green to dark dark dark green

Came out pretty flat due to improper measurements I'm sure, but they separate with ease on parchment paper
