Can you vape through a Ashcatcher?

So, I have been on the search for some new glass because I do enjoy combusting from time to time... I intend on vaping through the new glass as well, but I have heard that having an ashcatcher might be too much filtration for vaping with my setup.

I'm not 100% sure what too much filtration is, but if anyone knows their glass, mind giving me a hand?

I was planning on picking up a Syn Dome Perc Tube, SG Downstem, and Headford Inline A/C for combusting/vaping, but I don't know if it's overkill for my cause? Do I even need an A/C?

I have only ever owned a small bubbler, so excuse the noobiness ~_~

It is my impression that most of the folks around here agree that one stage of water filtration is adequate for vapor. I too would agree with that consensus. you really only need to cool the vapor down once.

For combusting, there are a number of reasons to use an ash catcher: smoother smoke, easier to clean than bong, allows you to consume a larger volume in one breath, etc. All of these considerations are only relevant with combusting, not vaporizing.

I first thought you meant just an ashcatcher

thats way overkill. just a perc tube like that is too much IMHO

for vapor you really want smaller pieces. bubblers, micro/ mini tubes, stuff like that.
the bigger the piece AND the more diffusion, the less flavor and less concentrated hits.

Get something solid and simple and you will be happy.

which vaporizer do you plan to use this setup with?

I'd be vaping with the Purple Days, I have been talking with a glass fanatic over at GC and he was helping me pick up my first higher quality glass set, and also my first tube.

Would you say even just a Syn Dome perc + SG 180 gridded downstem would be too much? I have heard only great things about the tube and was kind of set on it for a while, and also heard the stock stem sucked which is why I was going for the Sovereignty stem with it, but it sounds like that might be too much for vaping.

I don't know how the perc works exactly, but my buddy was saying I could just fill the dome part so I don't end up diffusing the vapor too much.

So when you filter too much would you essentially be losing some of the effectiveness of the herb?

THC isn't that water soluable
it makes it harder and harder to draw and you can't fill it as easy as with combustion so you loose efficiency per hit, not overall (though it isn't as efficient as direct draw)

the thing about smokers is they know whats good for SMOKE haha if they arent vaporists they wont get it.

you need a vapor specific setup. something designed more for smoke wont work as well.

I use the PD with only some setups I have because they work better then others I own. the best I have found was the 11" straight tube. SMALL and SIMPLE will help you here.

keep looking on ALT man, theres tons of vapor suitable pieces!

The Syn that you linked is cool, but for combusting sake, it seems like an extra $19 would be worth it for the Syn dome perc over on CK.

That inline bub by headford is pretty much the same as the inline A/C.. any chance they make adapters so you can use the A/C as a bubbler? Then maybe I could stick with the same glass setup I originally planned..

here is what I suggest.
if you like to smoke and vaporize, you can use the same piece, usually. remember that these pieces ARE originally meant for smoking

all the ones I listed would work fiiine for smoke. they are also small enough to work well with most vaporizers.

I HIGHLY highly recommend a carbon filter attachment only to be used when smoking from bongs. it filters pretty much all of the ash from the tube so the glass actually stays much more clean after multiple uses. it changes the taste of smoke(improves it in my taste) and makes it a whole lot smoother then smoke only filtered through water.

the only thing about carbon is that it is super important that you properly rinse and dry the carbon before use. You can rinse and dry a bunch of it at one time so it doesnt become a hassle. it must be rinsed thoroughly and soaked for a couple of hours and rinsed and strained again to get most of the carbon dust out(which is dangerous if you inhaled it and would dirty up your tube) and then just lay it spread out on some paper towels to dry.

edit! sorry for the double post. and FYI, a carbon filter does a lot more then an ashcatcher in terms of filtering, but you can add carbon to an ashcatcher BUT know that it adds drag during the hit(not on the clear when you remove teh carbon filter and bowl.
a straight tube with that ashcatcher, arm, and carbon filter would be nice! and not too draggy on the smoking

YES there are arm/mouthpiece attachments for ashcatchers to make them bubbler! I was just about to sggest you do that with the original setup you posted!!

My only fear is that I would end up inhaling the carbon and doing more harm than good (are they 100% safe/healthy?), but it seems to have a lot of really good reviews. Do you need to have 2 downstems for it to work, and how often do you have to replace the carbon?

I will probably end up going for a J-hook, and then the original setup I mentioned, the one from ALT is sooo long though, are they usually that long?

I've heard really good things about that ashcatcher, so it seems like a good choice for now

Yea that one is pretty big, but you can many different j hooks around the web.
oh man there are tons of threads on GC with people saying how they like the carbon. some people think its too much of a hassle but it really does remove some of the bad shit from the smoke, it also makes it smoother(always better on your throat) and keeps your piece cleaner. it surprisingly also helps with the odor of the smoke a decent amount!

Carbon is pretty safe after its been rinsed properly. plus it will then be going through at least 2 levels of water filtration in this case.

the carbon filter adapter is simple a piece that fits like a bowl but has 2 joints and goes between the downstem and the bowl. be sure to pull it when you clear the tube as it does add quite a bit of drag

I recommend every gram that you smoke through it, thats just me though I never got much time to give it a bunch of bowls back to back and I clean my pieces frequently.

Is it possible to use a carbon filter through an A/C? Seems like that would get rid of any risk of inhaling carbon particles whatsoever. These things sound awesome though...

For sure. You can use it through any water filtered piece pretty much. the only concern is drag but carbon wise i guess extra water diffusion could only help. you may not even find the need for the ashcatcher when you use the carbon but thats all up to you.

get a disc diffused carbon filter, those are the best and reduce the drag and filter better too.

+ 1 for a small tube. but don't let us stop you from getting a luxury (I haven't seen it but i am just assuming it is) piece if you want one! if you don't care about the money then you can buy 2 bongs! that one and a smaller one too.

I have a 100 ml ehle and i'm loving it. it's really small, has 13 punched holes in the stem, and 14 mm GonG fittings.

i hear anything under 1 ft is ideal for our vapor rigs mostly though.

fyi the less efficient big hitters are better for larger bong setups. SSV, Supreme etc...

I like the bubbler, been thinking of getting some new glass. Did you get it locally?

I've been meaning to check out City Haul and the Joint... been to either of em? I've been getting most of my stuff from Kustom for years and could use more variety.

BHOmb; for the moment, all of my glass piece ar purchased locally. The 12 arm bubbler I picked up from the Joint on Pembina Highway. I also picked up a double disk diffused stemless tube from there. That place is really good for glass, and they are starting to carry some high end pieces. They do glass repair (they're making a bowl stand for me) and they'll special order as well.

City Haul on Corydon is decent. They seem to focus mostly on lower cost pieces, but I haven't been there in about a month.

Both of those shops carry the Volcano, EQ, Herbal Aire, Solo, NO2 and other vaporizers.

The Joint on Pembina Highway is my number one 'go to' place because it is exactly half way between work and home (you can kinda figure out where I'm headed when I leave work).

Very cooling....and yes, some vapor will stick to the glass which is why a small water set up (as opposed to my larger bong) is ideal.
