Butane-Powered Vape for a Newbie

Marihuana

Iso Tensei
I've been thinking about getting my mother her first vaporizer for her coming birthday. It's high time she ditched combustion.

She is a longtime smoker of both cigarettes and cannabis, which makes me feel like a butane-powered vaporizer would be the best fit for someone who prefers cigarettes, chillums, and one-hitters. So far I've narrowed my choice down to the Lithe and the Vapcap M, slightly leaning toward the Lithe. However, I feel like the audible feedback given by the Vapcap when it is heated might be more useful to her as opposed to 'feeling' it out... The thing is though, I feel like the Lithe would be more up her alley because I know she's going to want big, fat clouds.

How do y'all feel about this situation? Should I go with my gut and get her a Lithe?

While I don't want to ruin the surprise, I have already ran the idea of the Vapcap past her with a rather barebones explanation as to how it worked. She expressed comfort with perfecting her technique. To me, that sounds like the go-ahead to pick up a Lithe. At the end of the day she's going to want thick vapor to scratch that itch.

I can get really thick clouds with the M and it's virtually idiot-proof if you obey the click and understand how heating closer/further from tip affects vaping temp. I haven't tried the lithe, but it's been on my radar so I've watched quite a few videos - it's never struck me as something I'd recommend to someone new to vaping :2c:

While I love my Dynavap and agree with you that the click feature would be great for a newbie you should consider the Vapman. It's small, beautiful, easy to use, very fast and stealth. Very difficult to combust with it and super efficient.

As everyone already mentionned vapcap is absolutely my choice too

And you should consider buying @Pipes induction heater, best stop smoking combo gift ever
I have both "In the Mail"! If all goes well I will be able to turn off Underdog after 3 years steady on. (you never know when )
On Demand , heavy hitter. Can't wait. (O yeah, I guess I have and will):myday:

Couldn't agree more with most posts here - VC FTW!!

I'd also suggest a triple jet lighter with triangle configuration. While I usually prefer a dual jet - IME 3 jet lighters are easiest to use by newbs. Plus it hits pretty fast while less likely to hit combustion than a heavy handed 4 jet. Show her how to heat using 3 jet with 2 jets out on end near tip, and 3rd inside (towards rest of VC). Pretty fool proof, very effective, quick and should give good hits. Works great with ground or tiny nugs - so no added expense or concern of old hands with a grinder needed.

One other suggestion for someone older you're trying to convert. Put a DV silicone mouthpiece on it. IME new people seem to respond to it better with the soft and shaped MP than the feel of metal near teeth (with "M"). This seems to give some people a bit of concern at first. Works well on a woody, too. Also think it helps newbs keep track or what end goes to your lips. Quite a handy addition for just a $1!

VM definitely small and beautiful, but don't know I would suggest it here for couple reasons unless Mom is a tinkerer and wants to play more with her vape. There is a lot to keep track of and you need "good eyes" (natural or with glasses for older and us getting older folks), small parts with tight actions that can be tough for old hands, and IME at least, it takes a good bit of technique, proper counting, and sometimes changing heating to get the most out of it. That's before you get to the danger factor when heating. I've roasted fingers (not severe but a little pain) more than a few times heating it. And, can be very frustrating unless you have a fine grind. Mine has been often neglected since VCs came into the picture (really should pull it out for some play time soon!), and it is one of the few vapes I have that isn't like riding a bike. What I mean is, it takes me a load or two to get back in the groove with it.

Nothing against VM! It is one I will never get rid of because of the lovely relationship we've had in the past. But, for ease of use and portability/subtlety the VC wins every time - even more so when you get your concentrate tech down with VC. On the plus sides for VM, I think flavor is much better with good tech and it is so F'n cool.

I've never heard of the Lithe. But I can assure your mom that a vapcap is Very easy to use unless she has hearing issues. I know there are pages on technique but really that's not necessary. It's tempting to hear the click and push a bit or other things that end up with combustion but if you follow the basic directions it is easy without any technique. If you don't mind spending a bit more money I think one of the ti-woody vapcaps are a bit nicer than the M. I got my first one when they initially came out and didn't know I needed to develop a technique. I totally destroyed the original glass one but ended up trying 1 more time with one of the early wood ones. Since I didn't know there was a technique I just used it and had no problem.
I say this because there have been quite a few vapes that either took me forever to figure out or never managed to figure out. The vapman is one that I never could work even though people describe it as easy.
As one of the older members I think a vapcap is one of the easiest butane vapes to use. You might also check out the Dobby vapes just because they are so attractive (to me). The have the same Triihouse design as the stickybricks do but are different shapes and colors. Also easy to use. (Almost a clone of my lily.)

I traded my Lithe away a couple years ago, but I when I did use it, I would use about the same technique as I use with the Sticky Brick. Just for fun, here's a vid on how not to use the Lithe. :disgust:

Oddly enough I have a harder time preventing combustion with the VapCap.

For anyone using a Lithe recommend method is to never point torch flame directly into the inlet diffuser. Just above it at an angle works best, watch the tip of flame getting sucked in.

@Marihuana for what its worth she might have to use a water piece every time with the Lithe, or a J-Hook or some kind of cooler.

Should she be using a water piece or j-hook simply due to the nature of the heating process, or because the vapor might be harsh? She's pretty used to a harsh hit. She normally combusts fully-packed bowls, hitting them as hard as she can, out of a micro-chillum.

I know you've gotten a lot of vapcap recommendations with users who have huge clouds with it and I'm not sure why but I suspect you have pretty much decided to get the lithe. It sounds like your mom will be happy no matter what you get her so you might as well just order it.

The one thing I would add is that I have a friend who combusts and over the years I've given her an MFLB. flowermate and another vape and the only one she actually uses is the vapcap.

Its harsh. Its a lot of heat with no production at the beginning which can be very irritating. Even when production starts it does not get better.

Out of all my vapes I'd never seriously use the Lithe native expecting a positive experience.

I was pretty much sold on the Vapcap until Payton chimed in regarding avoidance of combustion with the Lithe. I don't think my mom is the type of person to want to respect the click, rather to just blast it for the maximum amount of vapor production... But at the same time, I feel like the drop-dead simplicity offered by the Vapcap might take the cake here. I can't see her wanting to add more pieces to the equation of her experience. She used to like hitting the bong as a teenager, but as a grown woman, the only times she uses one are when I dab her out. Otherwise, she uses small glass pipes which she breaks on a frequent basis. I'm not sure whether she thinks a water pipe would be just another object to break, too much money to blow on anything but more herb, or too much effort to use. I'm open to the idea of buying her a piece or giving her one of my old rigs, but I don't completely understand her angle and I don't think I can without ruining the surprise!

What happened to all the fat Vapcap mouthpieces? Out of stock on Puffitup and the official site says nothing about them.

I wonder if they've stopped making them. They used to come as part of some of the early dynavaps. And the wood ones don't work with the M.

You might try emailing George to see if he has any even though they aren't selling them.

Sorry to laugh at your expense, but thanks for the entertaining vid! Your response same as mine when I occasionally find a way to do the same. Smoke is so harsh and rough after mostly vaping - but that's NOTHING compared to expecting vapor and hitting smoke! The absolute worst! :goat:

I'd just stick with the vape at this point, and think about a water piece later. There are a few small cheap pieces that pair well with the VC, but think anything is easier to get into once you've got your VC (or whatever vape) technique down.

Still think the VC would be best here - as long as she can hear the click. I have an older friend who just can't seem to hear it all the time. Of course he often doesn't hear other things, and swears he doesn't need his ears checked to me, his wife, and anyone else who comments about it.

If she can hear the click, and you can sit with her for a few loads, she'll probably enjoy the vapor over smoke and soon be to where most of us are when we overheat - coughing and "f'ng" repeatedly, as Stu demonstrated for us so well above. ;)

I just picked up a few of the fat DV mouthpieces with my sale order. When things are out of stock there, they usually just disappear and reappear when back in. As @little maggie suggested, I'd contact George or Arielle and see if they can hook you up. Whether just out of stock or being discontinued, I'm sure they'll be able to hook you up with a couple. Also, doubt they're discontinued unless there is some sort of cool replacement right around the corner. They're key to hooking up with glass unless you get a NonaVong, and doesn't seem like George/DV to pull this cool little item just to sell more NonaVongs.

Your mom sounds like mine, she tends to hit a small chillum or tiny push bowl bubbler. I got her a Vapcap but it didn't get her to stop combusting. I love the vapcap, but my mom thinks it's annoying with the cool down clicks and torch heatup. I've only used the glass one though, It seems like it's easier to get good performance out of the metal ones. I'd actually suggest an electronic vape if your mom is as impatient as mine is.
