Bud Identification?

Is there any way to tell what variety a bud is just by looking at it? I'm from back when it could only be one of 4 or 5 breeds, but these days I'm at a loss.

We don't necessarily have a choice here in the midwest - often buy with no hint of what it is.

I couldn't find a thread dedicated to identification - please say so if this should be moved.

Most of the time one can tell the diff between an Indica and a Sativa, but not so much as far as identifying a specific strain.
