Saul's Mini-Meltdown Bingo Speech really moved me. Just fucking FLOORED me.
I've always liked Saul / Jimmy - how could you not? But he's always been a "gimmick" sort of character to me. He never seemed like a real person, only a caricature. After that scene, I felt like Jimmy is a real person, someone that I know, someone that I pity and bond with and laugh at and love. I feel for the guy now, and get the sense that I understand him. He's Jimmy, and Saul.
No one in that crowd gives a fuck - they just want to play Bingo. Ain't that always the way.
But I think that scene will prove to be the moment when Jimmy became Saul - though he certainly doesn't realize that. Still, I think he accepts himself and his world and his future in that scene - even though he may not like it. But accepting yourself isn't always some grand event like we're often led to believe - sometimes it means accepting that you're really not as great as you thought you were, and never will be. A nice mix of "This blows" with "This is the truth."
Much like, perhaps, when Walter becomes Heisenberg? (Hmm... when would that be?)
Fuck it, Dude. Let's go bowling.
I think many of us here on FC have had similar moments like this one - our own little meltdowns - and I'd be surprised if no one else felt connected with Jimmy in this scene.
I think that scene is the finest writing Better Call Saul has offered this season - a season which featured nearly limitless fantastic writing. Good writing is usually patient, and BCS has shown that it has patience in spades. Takes some serious huevos grandes to be a patient writer these days, particularly on television. People all want their instant gratification bullshit - JUST SUM IT UP FOR ME IN ONE EP, WILL YA??!! I HAVE TO WORK TOMORROW!!!
I respect the shit out of the Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul team for giving their audience something better - for FORCING their audience to accept better, even when they don't know they want it. That's what good fucking writers do. They challenge you.
And ol' Bobby really pulled out all his acting chops here. Wonderful to see how far he's come as a serious actor - who would have ever thought? He tells you what's coming in this scene from its opening moment. Hopelessness in his every word. Try re-watching it.
When BCS has had its run, viewers will return to this scene as one of its finest achievements.
I have been hopelessly impressed by the maturity shown by this series, and look forward to more, more, more. Draw it out as long as you'd like - I'll be there for every self-indulgent moment. For better or worse, I'm rooting for Jimmy / Saul - just like I, somehow, always rooted for Walt / Heisenberg - even to the bitter end.
"I've been paying for it ever since. That's why I'm here."
I hear ya, brother. I hear ya.
