Best way to learn about oil rigs and other glass pieces?

Trying to figure all this stuff out. Diffusion, Percs, Recycling, Nails, etc, etc.

Do they make oil rigs that also has a bowl so that you could vape some flowers if you wanted to? Or can you take off the oil rig part and put on a bowl part and vice versa?


Is a $300 glass piece really that much better than a $100 piece? Are the expensive ones just for show?

Then I noticed that there are different styles and types of percs and diffusion. What difference does it actually make? Regardless of the style or size or whatever, the vapor is still going thru the water, so why are the bigger spendy ones better.

Also yes, its possible to get cheap fully functional glass (see DHGate bubblers for an example). So from that perspective more spendy options can be a "waste of money" to some. However by that same token, a BMW could seem a waste of money to a VW owner. Is build/material quality, refinement, and name prestige worth the premium? Thats up to you. And thats not taking worked (artsy) pieces into consideration.

Edit: I went the middle route with my Aeon Glass matrix bubbler. At $175 its middle of the road in cost (lower middle iMO). 100% functional with more than decent build quality. Not flawless and not artistic by any means however its not a POS and I enjoy using it.

That being said I wish I had saved a bit more for a Mobius.

you can get an inexpensive imported piece that performs as expected, with even firing percs and all that, and having clean well made connections that will stand up to miner abuse, but there is something to be said for glass artists that take pride in their work.

Yeah, I mean that gives you the definition, but it's still hard to put it all together. What works best with what you know? What type of perc is better. What nail is better. I guess I just need to start reading more.

Well I think part of the problem is that a lot of that is personal preference. Some people want more drag/chug while others want less. Some favor fizzy mass diffusion while others like a more direct type of diffusion (if any at all).

If you want to talk generalities, more diffusion = smoother hits and less flavor retention. That isnt to say you cant get good flavor retention with a high diffusion piece.

...and this isn't taking into account differences between using the rig for vapor only, oil only, or dual use...

my advice, grab a small water bottle, small mirror and hit your LHS. Give a few types a try... Decide on type. perc type, recycler, in-line, circ perc, donut etc. Size of can etc. Then decide on the quality of the piece. You can get top notch for 3-4X times cost or just go just enough and spend much less.

Its just a tool. Like a wrench you can buy a snap on or a china made of so so quality piece for 25% the snap on...

When it comes to art over function, the value is 100% subjective...

If you can find friends/cooperatives/local glass/head shops where you can sample a few, and get some advice, I have found doing this in person is best.

I am fortunate that I can try various types of glass through our mmj coop market. Today, I learned how to more accurately gauge when a Ti nail is really ready to dab on. An expert let me do that with the recycler!

If you have a facebook, check out some glass sales groups. You can literally browse for daaays looking at glass, figuring out brand names, prices, function, types of heady work. Also a good way to find cheaper, lesser known artists.

Or find a reputable head shop to get some advice. And I say reputable because some head shops dont know wtf they are saying, only trying to unload their glass.

I would suggest holding off on buying until you get a feel for what you are looking for. I would go with a cheaper, simple rig as a beginner, to figure out if you are really into oils. But avoid China glass! Support a real artist
