Athlete Vaporists?

High Everyone! I'm an avid endurance athlete--triathlons, endurance runs/challenges and the like. Not pro, just a hard-core amateur. I've often wondered if there are any others out there like me--serious endurance athletes that also get baked regularly. I've never had the forum to ask, until now thanks to FC.

I was a long-time combuster and recently converted to vaporizing at the end of January. I fell head-over-heels immediately, thanks to the taste and brief education I received about the health benefits versus combustion. The dude that turned me on had an Iolite and was patient in teaching me about draw speed, etc, which helped.

I now consider myself an obsessed vapor enthusiast. I've purchased two other vapes since getting the Iolite the day after I tried it (ordered my first higher-end glass piece last week and am waiting for the VXC and HI). I've not combusted since I converted, and I feel great. I wasn't a cig smoker before--just sparked herb via bong--and I never thought smoking herb hindered my training/racing all that much, especially since I'm not competitive anymore and do it because I like it and want to stay fit. But now that I've nailed my vapor preferences and routine (both portable with MFLB and at home with viVape), I certainly feel better and especially notice it when out for longer workouts (I like to get baked before long training sessions). I'm anxious to see what the next few months have in store as I further hone my vaporizing skills.

So, anyone else out there like me? Or am I a total loon as I've feared all along? :mental:

Vapinghole,,I see you changed your pic. Threw me off for a minute. I started vaping in the 90's with a glass adapter and heat gun. Vaping has come a long ways. Oh, and back then,,I ran 2 miles daily at lunch after working out. I sure hope you get the HI before the 'cloud'!

Ah, yes, sorry about that Jeppy! This pic seemed more appropriate...I'll stick with this for a while. Thanks for sharing.

Man - you're an OG vaporist! I agree with you--I'm more excited about the HI right now than the Cloud, especially given how well my viVape works--I can't imagine the taste gets much better. Though I'm stoked to have the Cloud too. Both the Cloud and HI will each have a special place in my vape collection. But I think I'll be finished for a while after those purchases

Emm, I wouldn't quite call myself an athlete as such but I am very keen on outdoor sports, particularly rock climbing which I do as often as possible (usually a couple times a week) and I must say. After combusting for five years its been 6 months+ since I had a smoke and I'm feeling great for it. I've really improved my climbing skills as well (might just be that I am practicing more) but vaping totally has me hooked. It just feels so much cleaner, and I'm not getting out of breath half as fast.

Not endurance, but I lift weights on a regular basis, hot yoga, run, and that Insanity known as Shaun-T! I try to keep my BF% in the single digits. I never vape before before those activities though, although from time to time I will to lift weights and it feels like i'm on roids lol I also maintain a very strict natural diet. I find chronic vaping keeps my BF% up and weight up about 5-10 lbs on average due to late night eating. I have just finished a 1 week T-break, and can noticably feel a difference in ease of breathing and my lungs. Plus i'm not congested like I used to be.

vape4life, i am curious about your ease of breating and congestion free after a 1week T-break.

After my recent conversion from combusting (2 months and 3 days, yes, i am keeping track. ), the benefits have been enormous.

How chronic is your vaping? Because, i dunno if i can improve much more than this.. i would smoke around 10 joints/day on average, sometimes more, although the last 6 months before stoping i was smoking around 5/day, more on the weekends, which would average about 5grams a week, sometimes more, depending whether it was flowers or hash.. and right now, i am more like a 2 LB trenches a day kinda guy.

I tend to postpone my first trench until after 4:20 (read recently an article in High Times about the difference between smart/stupid stoners, and although everybody is different, i find it helps me. ), that way i stay productive most of my day and start to relax after work, which has the plus side of helping tremendously in lowering my usage.

hey vorrage, my vaping was chronic but sporadic. Meaning, lotsa wake and bakes and hits throughout the day for maybe 3-4 days, and then i'd barely vape for the next few days (shift work). Altogether maybe vaped on average 2g/day. would go through 2oz/month or less, never more.

Do you have a link for that High Times article because i'm very curious about it. Thanks for the tip there because that's what i'm doing now, no more wake and bakes...and only vape (much less) in the evening, for the purposes of relaxation and sleep. I wanna take my 2g/day, and bring it down to .5g/night.

The difference in only a week has been MASSIVE! Weird I never noticed this last time I went 7 weeks, but shit I actually got 6 pack abs. I AM allergic to grass and trees, although I never have problems cutting the grass, so i'm assuming i'm allergic to marijuana too, because sometimes I will break out in massive sneezing fits, although I think it depends on the source/strain.

I'm hitting the bookstore and buying me a High Times....not sure why I never do!

It is not really informative, but what he said just clicked for me. Don't know why cause it is a rather simple and obvious advice IMO. But i have been doing that since and it helped me a lot.

I think it is possible to cut your usage to 0,5/night, when i first considered vaping i would never thought i could be okay with postponing until so late in the day. And yet, here i am.

I bought half oz in the beginning of the month, i think it will last me another month. In the first month since i stopped combusting, this seemed just impossible!

It is like, now i can choose to or not to vape. Before, i had to smoke to feel normal.

About being allergic, it is too soon to say if it is an allergy or abuse. Or maybe it is a minor allergy coupled with abuse. My advice is to monitor your usage, and do a couple more t-breaks. If it is strain related it will be easy to tell.

Thank you soooooooo much bro! I really respect you for being able to moderate and wait till later in the day, and your advice is perfect. That is pretty encouraging to hear you say that you can choose to vape or not, and I was in the same boat having to vape to feel normal, and even then I wouldn't really get "high". It was clearly abuse, and i'm not going back there again (even though i've said that before in the past), but you make a good point about a minor allergy coupled with abuse. I'm taking your advice dude, big time, and i'll do some more breaks and spread it out so I don't develop a tolerance again.

My main fucking problem now is the lack of sleep.... I can get 4-5 hours, but I need like 6-7 (or 8) to function at my best. I always wake up, and am never able to sleep usually around 4:45-5:15am

Wait, 5 j's a day would 35 a week. How in the hell where you rolling 35 joints out of 5 grams? I can see maybe 10 or 15...

Thanks, everyone, for your comments so far!

@vape4life and vorrange, I adhere to a regular vaping schedule (though it's daily). Yes, sometimes I wish I could vape all day, but I find there is a great satisfaction in the discipline of moderation. Being able to enjoy your vices without going overboard is easier said than done, and to do so successfully gives a sense of accomplishment...but that's just me. Different folks have different strokes.

Cheers!

i guess i jump the gun on 4:20 (that is, in addition to the morning sweat-and-bake and after lunch session). NPR/all things considered starts at 4:00 and my afternoon ritual is NPR, Merlot and a session ... unless i need to make a run to the post office.

one thing that tempts me to do more sessions during the day, is that i really love using my vape.

Man, I hear ya! After I first figured out how to vape correctly, I actually used MORE herb than I did when combusting because I fucking loved vaping so much relative to combusting, the taste especially. But now I've settled back down and am using less herb than I did when combusting. Plus, I feel much better.

And vape4life - I'd say hot yoga certainly involves endurance (or any type of high-energy yoga). Kudos to you!

i think i overmedicated.
I'm a retired-due-to-injury athlete. I swam at a Division I university and qualified for the 2008 Olympic Trials. I got injured in late 2006, had 2 surgeries and was forced to quit. I've had a total of 5 surgeries now and I have permanent nerve damage in my left arm. I never used marijuana until I got injured now I'm a vaporizing machine haha! Opiates suck, CBD and THC are now two of my best friends. I hate smoking, always have. I can't swim anymore but I do enjoy cycling. I love getting vaked and going for a long bike ride.

It seems vaping could increase lung capacity which would be great for athletes, especially endurance athletes. Its certainly great for post workout recovery!

Sorry about your injury, neve13. That sucks. But I'm glad vaping helps you and that you stay active. I had an ACL reconstruction (soccer-induced) in 2004, and I'm fortunate to have fully recovered.

And I've often wondered if vaping could increase lung capacity. Though I also realize it's probably best not to have anything in my lungs, but if I'm going to enjoy medicine, I'd rather it be in a healthier manner than combustion. Cheers!

I would say I don't consider myself an "athlete", but I have on many occasions done resistance training, long bike rides, and long runs while vaked. I think that it has helped to improve my performance in most cases, but is also fun to do sober as well.

Heres a funny story. My father in law and I were coaching my sons little league team,,,,many moons ago. My father in law was my wifes, stepfather. Well this guy,,,being very full of himself gave a speech to the parents shortly after practices started. That speech went something like this: "My name is 'ME' and I'M not a professional baseball player 'per se',,,,,but I am a professional athlete". A guy whose son was on the team,,,leaned over to me and whispered,,"what is he a professional in?",,,I whispered back,,"Roller derby". You would have thought I had just told this guy the funniest joke he had ever heard. :lmao:

Thanks dude, it's one of the hardest things i've ever done, and you're right my heart is pumping hard for the entire hour. The detox classes are murder, but the results are unreal.

I can empathize, I have two badly herniated discs in my neck (c6/c7) which has resulted in permanent nerve damage resulting in atrophy of my right pec, tricep, and upper back. Sucks, but I deal with it...at least the pain is now gone.

When I switched over from smoking to vaporizing, I noticed I could breath better during exercise. It felt like my lung capacity increased, I wouldn't get out of breath as quickly.

These days I like to have a vape before doing bodyweight exercises. The cannabanoids are supposed to decrease pain in your body, allowing you to go a little bit further. I also find the weed helps me focus.
