Any knife nuts here at FC?

I've noticed a bit of discussion on knives here at FC, but no place to discuss. Any steel junkies floating around? Do you collect or just use? What do you collect or use?

If you wanna discuss hunting, fishing, shooting, archery, bushcraft, or anything else like that, please feel free.

Personally, I am a collector of custom folders, but I buy and use quite a variety of production fixed and folding blades. I also head to Escanaba Michigan once a year with a bunch of other enthusiasts to make my own knife. I'll be back to post some pictures of my collection.

PIC HEAVY!!

Without getting into detail, here are some pictures of some of my favorites. I will say that the fixed blade was designed and made by me last year. The handle is dyed camel bone and it came out pretty damn nice.

I've been collecting knives for years. Folders or fixed blade,if it's cool I like it! Most of my "high end" knives are damascus,I love the patterns a good blade smith can produce. Lately I've been getting into tactical folders. A few years back I received an Emerson CQC7,hand made by the man himself,Ernest Emerson. It was an honor to meet the man in person. Hell of a nice guy. The fact he took the time to talk shop with a dick-weed like me says volumes about the man.
When true one off custom knives get to spendy,I turn to the likes of Benchmade,Sog,CRKT and a few others. Quality and design are top notch, and the prices are low enough I'm not afraid to actualy use them.
Right now I'm actively seeking out custom Tomahawks. In Afganistan I carried a one-off t-hawk by Bob Dosier. That piece of steel had way more uses than a standard issue knife, even saved my life in a dark shithole cave. I find it ironic in this day of smart weapons and hi-tech doodads that a good blade still has a place on the battlefield.
WOW!!
While I was tapping out the above post Deadshort posted his pics. My friend you have excellent taste! Anyone even remotely into knives would be proud to have them in their collection.
Yeah,I'll admit it,I drooled a little looking at the pics. Some say I have a "problem"'but a little stabbing shuts them right up.
Great stuff Deadshort, thank you for sharing.

Man, I used to have a shit ton of Daltons. Nice autos.

Shipdit, check out Zero Tolerance if you're getting into "tactical" folders. ZT is the tough as nails subsidiary of Kershaw. I'm always a Spyderco fan, they make excellent blades. If you are into THawks then check out Winkler Knives. The guy makes some of the finest custom T Hawks I've ever seen.

Edit: custom CQC-7's go for serious $$ now. He'll, any custom Emersons bring in big cash.

Sweet blades t-dub!
I like autos myself but don't have anything like that Dalton folder. Never even seen one with that blade profile, would I be out of line if I asked where/how you got it?
How is the action on the out-the-front model? All the otf knives are to finicky for daily use.
I know I'm not supposed to ask,and I'll probably get a friendly warning, but if you want to sell either one please give me a heads up...I promise I'll give them a good home?

Even though I dislike Microtech knives (at least the owner) very much, they make excellent OTF autos. Pricey, but they easily hold up to everyday tasks. I carried one at work for about a year and it's still ticking.

Hey ShipDit, when you check out Winkler's site make sure to click on the "Winkler's knives II" link, otherwise it takes you to his presentation stuff.

Thanks for the heads up on the Winkler Hawks. I'll definatly be checking them out. I know he makes great knives, but I didn't know about his 'hawks.
I've seen ZT knives before and wondered if they are the same quality Kershaw is know for. If they are that's excellent "bang for the buck".
Between blades, guns and vaporizers it's no wonder I'm broke!

I hear you. It seems that my money goes to the same things. Yeah, Winkler's axes are excellent. You will not be disappointed with Zero Tolerance. Check out the ZT0350. Under $100, stout as hell, excellent lockup, available in a variety of blade steel.

Purchased online from BladeHQ (no longer stocks) and Pioneer Valley Knife & Tool. This place looks promising as well: http://www.arizonacustomknives.com/Rob-Dalton.aspx

The action on the out the front hits like a hammer, you can feel it up your arm when it deploys ;)

Cold steel before they were bought by the EVIL EMPIRE!!!

Cold Steel is still based out of Ventura, CA. They produce different products at different factories in the US, Japan, PRC, and Taiwan, and a few others. The majority of their products are made in the PRC, Taiwan, and Japan though. I was never a big fan, but I do have an old Trailmaster from when they were still produced in Japan out of AUS-8 back in the day.

No nut, but,

I have this glorious SOG Trident
If you see that little "groove" under the "SOG Clip", it allows you to cut cord, or fishing line without opening up the knife.

Also have a sexy little Case Pocket Knife that came as a groomsman gift

SD Haze, does that little tab keep the blade locked in the closed position? That would be handy for a safety seatbelt cutter. That arc lock is supposed to be very strong. I haven't had a chance to check one out yet. I really like that blade shape a lot.

That little Case Trapper is good for when you can't whip out the SOG.

It has a two-step lock. The tab on the right is black when locked and RED=READY!
If it's set to the red tab, but the 2nd lock on left is set to down, then it still won't open.

Surprised they don't mention the seatbelt cutitng as an example on the product info. Great idea.

I was wondering the same thing,I guess great minds do think alike!
I only have one Cold Steel knife,a recon tanto I picked up like 10 years ago, pretty good blade IMHO.
Does anyone have any exp./thoughts about the Gerber MK 2? I have one my dad carried in Vietnam,so there is no way I'm gonna use that one. I do like the design but have heard some negative reviews. But ya can't always believe what some reviewer you've never heard of says. I figure we here at FC have a good,no bullshit community so I do value any input from a member. Well, make that most members.:)

The MK2 was made for one reason, a last ditch weapon. Double edged for slashing and a point built for penetration of soft tissue. Most of the gripe about the MK2 was blades bending easily in the field due to the wasp waisted blade. Early models were even worse because they offset the handle and blade by a few degrees to fit better in the sheath. The design was similar to the Fairbairne Sykes dagger which was never meant to be used as a field knife. It is exceptional as a fighting knife with slashing and thrusting in mind.

Not a collector, but as a budding outdoorsman/survivalist I've taken an interest. Mora knives have a really good reputation, and I found some surplus for $12 USD each so I pounced. They're quite good, great heft, hand feel, built durably and stainless blades (my preference, and not as common as carbon).

This may possibly push FC boundaries a bit, but if there are any hunters here, what are your thoughts on gut hooks? Should I be using one my first time or is basic coordination and a gleaming edge on my knife sufficient?

love a sharp edge. have collected a few since i was 6 or so. ill admit im not real picky so hardly have a collection that is show, just some ive kept since ive had them so long.

my current in use is an 18" machete i keep in the truck and mora2000 that goes with me when "outdoors".

tY3owcQ.jpg

not my photo, but i like the scenery, thats the mora2000 very sharp and easy to hold/use...right size kind of deal, not too big not too small. picked it up for 20 bucks a few years ago and still going strong.

what i keep on me is an old 3 blade pocket knife many grandpas would give as gifts...as did mine. ;)

Roger D, that fixed blade to the far right in the top picture is beautiful. Is that a Fox as well? Everyone should own at least one Opinel folder.
