Any FC'ers around or nearby this Olympics mess?

Is there anyone showing up in Rio for this great event (I mean, giant mess) just about to start up next week and that will go on for a month? If so, anyone willing to meet up for a coffe, drink or vape session?

I'll be around, so if anyone is in for a meetup, please chime in.

It would be great if you can give us updates from Rio
as the Olympics are happening . You will have the up close
personal accounts of the events .

From what I've been hearing , Rio is not even ready yet .
The toxic water , housing issues for the athletes , and venues
not being completed . The criminality aspect and the safety for
the visitors , just to mention a few ...

I will be tuned in tho , because I grew up watching the Olympics .
But I do feel that , it's just a money making juggernaut for the
IOC Only . They don't care what happens to the country's
infra-structure afterwards or the debts they have incurred .

I still like the premise of a world sporting competition amongst
other countries . ( or which country can Cheat the best ) ...

Ya , if you have the time , keep us posted from where
you are .

Yeah guys, I'll try to survive and tell you what's going on from my point of view.... But basically we (the city population) will be excluded from the main events, stages and arenas, as usual. It's not targeted for us, you know?

We're used to sewage and dirt thrown out in the sea, bay and lakes. It looks like natives are quite more resistant to bacteria and all those kind of infections, as we've been exposed to alll types of contamnation from childhood. I believe local athletes will have some advantage on sail and rowing competitions, and maybe some foreign athletes will get sick....

What a pitty the greatest opportunity to really clean rivers, lakes, the bay and seawater just passed by, as the other chances we had, some guys took the money, that was supposed to be used on this cleaning and infraestructure projects, and left the shit as it was...

I would love that premise, @poonman as well, but in fact I gave up trying to believe in humanity whenever there is huge events, huge companies or huge amounts of money involved. Capitalism structure created this target-profit-above-all mindset where ethics, humanity and so on come in second, third or last place. Profit is always a must.

Another detail that really bothers me, those thousands of volunteers!!! People choosing to give their workforce for free to this mafia that is profiting billions!!! Would you work (AND for free!) to some criminals? That's crazy....

Well I'm not in Brazil, but the BBC iPlayer has half decent coverage on catch up, not sure why they won't give us sub-division two men's Gymnastics qualification, which includes team GB, perhaps it has the French guy breaking his legs on rings? What's odd is Women's sub-division two is also not available?

I've yet to catch up on the men's team final, but the USA women's Gymnastic team has blown me away, they are 10 points ahead of second place China and miles ahead of the pack and that's just in qualifying.

The precision skills and high difficulty was phenomenal to watch, well done USA, good luck with the final, you should blow the competition out of the water.

It's just a shame that the team is so good in the individuals they scored 1st, 2nd & 3rd, but only two from each country are allowed to compete! Even though we all know USA should probably have bronze, silver and gold!

So looking forward to the final, fingers crossed USA keep a tight ship!

So, its over!!

I could check a handball match (because some foreign guys invited me, as actually we cant afford those..) and that was just to confirm my assumptions on what usually goes on here. Random behavior depending on who you find on your way. As, for example, we did not have to pay for either subway or bus tickets, as we're supposed to, because there were so many peoole coming and going it was almost impossible for them to check. Found some local people on the way and they found out the same flaws and were using the system without paying as well....

The lines were huge as were the distances to get from one location to the other. It took us like more than 8 hours out to check a 1,5 hour match. And we got late to the game due to so many lines and security checks...

There is a public holiday this monday to "help try to get people out of here" and probably later this week the city will get back to its normal day by day problems and challenges. And in 3 more months there comes summer high season back again. Not to mention the paralimpics games coming in 2 weeks from now.

The funniest event that took place I read about was the american swimmers trying to pretend they were robbed while in fact they were just acting like drunk spoiled teenagers who became angry cause they had to go outside a gas station shop to reach the restrooms.... I can imagine if they were local (specially black skin guys) what would have happened....

But, most of all it looks to me it was a successful event and more people will leave the city willing to come back soon (as they always do).
