Hey folks,

I thought I'd start a thread for anyone here that digs drums and percussion, whether you're a musician or just someone who digs music in general! We can share info, pics, discuss our favorite drummers, and better yet - DRUM VIDS TO VAPE TO!

I'll start. I'm a drummer and percussionist who has been playing for 20 years. I try to learn and listen to as many styles of music as possible, especially the music of various cultures from around the world. My preference in drummers and my overall approach in general has more to do with what one has to say on the instrument as opposed to being flashy or playing a million notes a second. Below are a couple of examples of my playing so you can see what I'm about.

We drummers and bassists need to stick together! We are the crux of the rhythm section! Also, yes, Marco is a monster drummer and unique as hell.

I agree one hundred percent that playing music gives one a different perspective on life. For me, it allows me to communicate and express things that I could never convey using mere words. I truly believe that music is the universal language and it all started with rhythm.

Also, it's hard not to appreciate all of the cats you mentioned/posted. Gadd, Colaiuta, and Weckl are three of the greatest drummers to ever grace the instrument.

Here's a video of my biggest influence and favorite drummer, my dear friend/mentor Billy Martin of Medeski Martin & Wood. I absolutely love his loose and organic approach to music and the way he expresses himself on the instrument is unlike anyone else out there.

It's always awesome to meet fellow drummers who enjoy their cannabis.

Coleman is pretty beastly. I'm personally not a fan of the super busy/gospel chops/linear licks craze that's recently taken the drumming world by storm, but for me to say that Chris Coleman is anything less than an absolute monster would be just plain wrong.

I dig more of an organic, Max Roach-esque approach to soloing. Taking a phrase and slowly exploring and developing it around the set. I love it when I feel like a musician is saying something and speaking to me on their instrument and not simply shouting, so to speak.

A little Throwback Thursday action for you. This is a duet that Terry Bozzio and I performed back in 2010. Most people (including myself) are used to seeing Terry behind a monstrous kit, so this is a rare glimpse of the man on percussion. This piece is more of a soundscape, so it's a fun one to watch/listen to when vaped out of your gourd.

A little Throwback Thursday action. This was just a little experimental improv I had with a bassist from back in 2009. The beginning is pretty trippy and you may recognize the sound of one of the percussion instruments from sci-fi and horror films.

I just debuted a new instructional series that focuses on experimental techniques. The first lesson focuses on a technique called a cymbal scrape and also features a demonstration of how it can be applied to a groove situation.

Lesson 2 in the Experimental Techniques series shows how you can make some crazy sounds on your drum set, using rubber super (bouncy) balls.

I love Hangs and would kill to get my hands on one! Little known fact: The folks at Hang actually go out of their way to stress that they do not consider the Hang a drum. Instead, they consider it to be a unique instrument all its own. The reason they discourage the term "Hang Drum" is because they believe the word "drum" will encourage people to bang on them or hit them too hard. No matter what they claim, however, it's definitely a percussion instrument (and one of the coolest ever)!

You're correct, Steve Moore's playing always fits the song. That's what makes all of the flash and shtick so entertaining. His performance is over the top but his playing is always right on the money and in the pocket.

As an avid death metalhead, George Kollias (drummer of Nile, one of my all-time favs) is an easy favorite drummer of mine. His foot/leg technique is just amazing, can do faster kicks with one foot than most drummers could hope to with both lol

The Phil and Chester duet is a classic! The "This is Rock n Roll!" in the keyboard video had me crying though.

Kolias is a freaking monster. My friend is a huge death metal head (as are many of my friends) and drummer. He actually won the double bass portion of the World's Fastest Drummer contest back in '07. I'm sure I don't have to ask, but do you know about Derek Roddy? Dude is a BEAST. Most people only know him for his work with Hate Eternal but his drumming stretches way beyond simply metal.

Tomas is another beast. I don't listen to Meshuggah personally, but I made a personal challenge to myself about two years ago to try and learn the opening pattern to Bleed using one foot. Obviously it's impossible to get it up to actual speed, but the challenge helped me develop some crazy single pedal chops. Check it out!
