Advice for choosing my first DHV (looking for a portable heavy hitter)

Hi everyone! I’m a newcomer to the vaporizer scene, and I’ve mainly stuck to combustion when it comes to getting high.

I’ve got a high tolerance, and I reached a point in my last year of college where I was spitting out tar all day from how many bowls I was downing. I’m looking to switch to vaporizers, and while I was considering an e-rig at first, I can get good quality flower for pretty cheap where I live, so I think a good quality flower vape is probably the better idea. I’m looking for something that can give me hits that rival my bong, but I realize I’ll need to spend a good amount of money to do that. I also would like something portable (as tempting as a ball vape sounds), because I’d like something I could take out in nature/with friends and hit (also to take home from college with me).

I’ve done a good bit of research, and I’ve narrowed my choices down to the Tornado with stem and wand (if I can get it), the Simrell, the Tempest v2, the Tafee Bowle 2.0, the Firewood 10, and the TM2 (though it seems to have a bit harsher vapor), but I am open to all other suggestions. Coming from combustion, I’ve never really properly tasted weed before so I would like a device that gives me very nice taste, but being a heavy-hitter with smooth vapor quality is probably my biggest priority. I just found this forum while looking into the Limelight Frolic, and I was wondering what everyone here suggested!

Welcome to FC! Would be good to look at more threads here to see other input, but you already have narrowed down some good choices, might be more capable with a home style unit, and there are others in more portable fashion... Especially on aftermarket resale etc. But I would also highly recommend aftermarket glass like hooks dry and more to step up the experience for any of the vapes that have the connectivity regardless. Whatever you get, try to spend the time only using it, so you can really get to know it and adjust to the differences

Oh getting glass is definitely a priority too, I’m thinking a nice beaker or the Orb for at home and a j-hook for something more portable. Thanks for the advice!

Nice, I would highly recommend different glass for water honestly, like the new FC mod, and a right angle hook specifically

Your list does have some good picks. I myself am looking for a portable that "does it all".

I own a Tafee Bowle 2 and it's an amazing vape, with great taste and great battery life but it's a clumsy shape as a portable. That being said, it's the best portable I've come across so far I would say.

The Frolic, if it lives up to the specs, looks like a great pick and I plan to get one when they're available but it's currently unreleased and untested. I think of it as a more portable Tafee Bowle 2 hopefully.

I don't own a TM2 or a Firewood but I've read that they're both very capable vapes. Their compact shapes and power however make it such that they eat through batteries, at least that's what I've read. Maybe not a problem if you just carry spares.

I have a Tornado and it's great but not really discreet if you're looking for that. You'll need a torch or an IH and they're both conspicuous. If that's not a problem it's an option.

Just some thoughts though... Vaping is *lot* more efficient than smoking so maybe you won't need a super heavy hitter? Also, the best heavy hitters are primarily desktops and not portables. I'm still searching for that Unicorn portable that can give me the desktop experience on the go. I'm hoping the Frolic may be it, as the specs look really good.

Hey, thanks for the response! Tafee bowle 2 seems amazing for it’s battery and quality, but it just sucks that for that price I’d have that form factor and non-compatibility with most glass. I am really excited for the Frolic though. How is your tornado? I always hear about how its the best of the manual vapes

How is your tornado? I always hear about how its the best of the manual vapes

I have nothing but good things to say about the Tornado. It's an efficient, powerful and tasty vape for me. I have only ever used induction (The Wand) and I think they work great together. Many will say that it's even better with more power (big torch or bigger IH). I've used it with glass and I bought a nice stem for it too because I like it so much.

It's a heavy hitter for sure but requires some technique and it's not really easily shareable unless each person has their own bowl.

The Simrell is fantastic, and even though it's quite expensive, it is arguably a great vape for beginners for the following reasons:

1. You'll be able to experience all three major types of heating with it: Conduction, Hybrid, and Convection. As you've probably read in your research, each heating type produces different flavors and effects, but until you actually experience each, it's hard to say what you'll like and won't like. Using the Simrell will give you a solid baseline understanding of how each heating profile works and feels. Also, each of the Simrell's heating profiles are pretty legit instances of their respective general concept. There's definitely gonna be spicier convection out there, and there's probably stonier conduction out there, but the Simrell's hits are nothing to slouch at if you dial in your technique. And the Hybrid hits are top of the line.

2. Like all TEDs (the hot stick analogue vapes), the Simrell is very ritualistic. A lot of us love TEDs specifically for their slow and mindful ritual; other just want to click a button and be done with it. Using the Simrell will help you discover your preferences. Heating it with a torch requires a bit of technique, but it's also quite forgiving / hard to combust in, so it's a good device to learn torching on, an important skill to have if you decide you like dry herb vaping. With an induction heater like the Wand, operation is dead simple.

3. The flavor is fantastic, and it'll give you a pretty good idea of what herb vaping has to offer on the flavor front. You'll get bright and sweet terpenes at the start of a bowl, and roasty and savory notes at the back half of the bowl. I find that no two vapes taste the same, and I love the unique flavor of most devices I own, but there are definitely vapes that are more and less flavorful. The Simrell definitely falls in the more flavorful category.

4. It works great both natively and with a WPA. You can milk a bong, or hit it natively with the vortex cooling stem. Hitting a TED natively is a pretty unique experience, unlike any other consumption method imo. Again, more opportunities to explore different types of vaping.

5. It holds its value pretty well in the second hand market at the moment, so if you decide it's not for you you can pretty easily get most or all of your money back.

Truth be told I don't think you can go wrong with any of the devices you listed, they're all fantastic. But I think there's something to be said about the versatility of the Simrell, and I think it'd make for an intriguing first vape.
