Acquire more herb than you can use?

I have a love for grass in my hand

The tastiest stuff goes to the back of the rotation and I always vape the least tasty first.

haha yep that is me. I got worried that some would go bad after I got my med card. Found out that the long cure only made it better.
I burn the worst first

Cannabis will continue to improve for 6 months of cure. After that there is no real benifit.

So I have been hoarding herb for almost 3 years now. I have some which is 2 years old.

Recently I stopped putting my herb into smaller containers as I used it. The 4 oz jelly jars seemed to work fine, even at half full. But all of a sudden all my old herb is turning really weak in the last 6 months in the jars with only a couple of grams or less and I like to take a load out here and there.

I was worried about it in the past so I stopped purchasing any cannabis since June/July of last year. Some strains are only about half as potent as they were 6 months ago! most of those are 2 years old or so. I think the curing process ceased at that point as some flowers are starting to become more brittle. But it was amazing how much potency a few strains dropped from 18-24 months. Up until 18 months they seemed fine, just a developing taste.

I think one of the problems is from opening up jars every blue moon to grab a little pinch, then wait another week or two to grab it out as well. So I think I am gonna keep reducing container size again. I just kinda liked the jelly jars because they all matched. I'd really like some jyarz but it would be hundreds of dollars worth. So I think what I am going to do is have a 6 month max on my herb (like above), maybe a year.

I use cannabis medicinally for many reasons, so I like to have many strains on hand so I like to take notes and pick the perfect cannabis for that moment. I don't NEED 31 different strains. Most any strain works for me.

As far as cure, I have noticed a couple of developments. One is that lemon seems to come out or become more pronounced after a month or two. With time it starts to taste more "hashy" too, probably due to decarboxylation. I like hashy flavored cannabis. Of course cannabis is covered in resin glands but In the past before BHO hash had a certain smell to it which I really liked. I like the taste of most BHO though, just two somewhat different things.

I think topical salves should work well, I rememember reading a thread by badkittysmiles mentioning straining oil with bare hands giving her some almost-immediate pain relief

[edit] found it..
I know the actual post is regarding edibles, but she briefly talks about straining the goodies without wearing gloves

I kept reading this thread and didn't see anyone mention this, but you can make ISOpropyl alcohol with weed for rubbing.

I get the high percentage iso and mix with ground up herb. let sit for at least two weeks and then use to rub on pained areas.

My grandma uses this as well to great effect.

Edit: Oh yeah on topic. I don't have more than what I use for a single month. I'll usually just pick up on the first or so and it'll last me the entire month.

I pick up from a connect who works in weed shops and he knows the growers. So I'll get him to throw some fire buds on top of my oz of shatter. He makes good wax.

If I go to a shop it's because my cousin dragged me there and we're splitting something. Usually really danky buds. He doesn't like getting super high with wax all the time.

I"ll usually roll a fat blunt once a month with all my "extra" lol. Or if I have an excess of wax I take larger dabs. I actually like the super high burning sensation that accompanies the front brain sometimes. I feel like it's the only moment I get to relax and hear my own thoughts. True story, being super dabbed out makes me better at video games. Like I can finally concentrate.

Do you have anything in with the herb in the 4 oz jelly jars?
Like a Boveda humidity control pack??

If you don't have the Boveda humidity packs your cannabis will lose potency over time. Also if your cannabis is in the light it will lose potency. I have a few Cvaults and I use the Boveda humidity packages.

You can use jars and keep them in a dark dry cool place and put a Boveda pack and you should be good to go. The Boveda packages need to be replaced every 4 months. You can buy them on Amazon.ive also seen them at the dispensary that I go to. I've noticed some growers at the Cannabis Farmers Market use the Beveda humidity packs.

Right now I have a very nice selection of many different kinds of cannabis.

I think your herb will stay potent and reasonably fresh for at least 3 months if stored in a mason jar or Jarz containers etc. Also as Carol stated, you need to store in a cool and dark area.. If you want it to stay fresh and potent for longer than around 3 months then the use of the boveda packs would be a wise decision

Boveda packs would probably help. But some was getting to be 18 months or so and I decided to dip in there more frequently. Amazing how fast it got crispy that way due to oxidation and I swear some of the sativa hybrid strains have lost half their potency.

As long as my cannabis is not crispy when I get it, as long as it is in a sealed jar with very little headroom it should stay good for long enough. I keep it in a safe in the dark in a place which stays around 60 degrees. My problem, like others, is that I hoard away all my most amazing cannabis for special occasions. So many of those strains may be much older than my cheaper ones.

I wonder if bodega packs makes a really tiny one for small jars? Over the years I have simply reduced container size so there isn't much headroom and have not had many issues like that, but as soon as I started dipping into my top shelf every night (which has a lot more headroom due to less cannabis) it was really rapid, how quickly it degraded.

The couple of really dense indicas I have which are approaching 2 years are doing fine, but then again I don't really dip into the indicas other than for recreation for the most part. But I checked this week and it was still great.

But heck yeah I get more herb than I use, but only to a point and then I acquire it at the rate I use it (empty a jar, get a new one). I just need to try to use it within 6 months or so. I have a habit of saving a gram or two for whatever the perfect moment is. It's the opening and closing of the jar to pull out 0.15 grams here and there introducing more oxygen and causing swings in humidity along with too much head room.

I have been a bit leery about boveda packs though, from contamination. I'm not sure what is in them, probably a salt of some kind. It's probably harmless, but the only thing I like touching my cannabis is glass, and clean hands, sometimes a grinder.

@HomeFree ,
Pure water and natural salt. They have a long history of protecting food, cigars, precious violins, etc.
Totally safe and they work. They arrive safely sealed, place in jars. Purer than the buds.
I just tried some 20 month old Green Crack and it was superb.
What size jars do you use? Packs are very flexible, can be folded over, like in a JyARZ Classic size.
Highly recommend using them !!!
......................................................... From Boveda site:

How Boveda Works for Herbal Medicine

Scientifically engineered to maintain a precise relative humidity in an enclosed space, and available in multiple RH levels.
Boveda will never humidify beyond the RH on the pack, so there’s no such thing as “too much”. You want to think in terms of using at least the minimum because the more you use, the more efficient Boveda works and the longer they last. You’ll know it’s time to replace when the entire Boveda begins turning hard.
Simply place the correct number of Boveda inside your container to maintain a precise relative humidity. Each Boveda consists of a specially prepared saturated solution of pure water and natural salt. This saturated solution is contained within a water-vapor permeable “reverse osmosis” membrane. Within a closed container Boveda maintains a predetermined level of (RH) by releasing or absorbing purified water-vapor, as needed, through the membrane.
Boveda provides the cleanest and most purified humidity of all other products available on the market today.

All hail boveda.

Has definately made life easier for me. After my initial slow dry over 2 weeks, boveda does the majority of my cure for 3 months, then looks after my cured flowers till I'm ready to vape.

I have no complaints, and it's fine touching the herb

I use 4 oz jelly jars so that size will be a tight fit. Maybe I will get some and fashion myself smaller ones or even experiment with different salts until I get the humidity I want. I have made makeshift RH chambers with different salts and water to check the accuracy of my RH probes. I found one of the sources I had been reading back then about salts and humidity.

http://www.omega.com/temperature/z/pdf/z103.pdf

But that requires making a solution, which would not be workable. I wonder if there is anything special about boveda packets to where I couldn't split some into more, smaller sachets which are sized better for the small jars.

I picked up some kind of black domina cross which tastes amazing. I would like to hold onto it for a good while, but not if it won't stay so tasty as long. I have considered using wax on the band lids but would rather not vape any wax.

So what I like to do is grab some herb, vape it until I know what it helps with and doesn't help with, nail the taste and potency down, and then save it for times when it would be ideal. But the truth is most cannabis does the job, just some are better at it than others. I noticed I have been subconsciously been identifying my needs, and trying to narrow them down and see if I need a little more for pain, more for stress, more for brightening mood, more for sleep, and so forth. that way I don't end up with too much of one and not enough for another.

@ShishkaBerry stop smoking and your flowers will last longer, then maybe accumulation can begin...

I vape a lot at home but my stone age friends haven't seen the light yet so I tend to smoke when out, the terms just melt together lol. I almost had one friend converted but he lost his vape pen and hasn't gotten another yet.

Iv given up trying to convert people now, all my narrow minded associates can carry on wasting their herb and damaging themselves, I'm sick of preaching to people who don't want to listen..I'm a happy vaper, and that's all that matters....
