thanks for starting this thread OP. I've thought about giving my dog some abv because i assumed like a lot of ppl that it would be safe for dogs and pretty much most mammals. thankfully i've never wanted to waste abv lol

My friends have a dog who has been living around MJ his whole life. They always leave their baggies sitting on the table and he has never shown an interest in eating it. Last week however, I had about 1g of ABV sitting on a dvd case on the table.
We were watching TV, and after about an hour I see the dog licking the carpet and thought, "Why the fuck is he licking the carpet?". Then I noticed that the dvd case was lying on the ground and the ABV was nowhere to be seen :o, I think he accidently knocked it off the table with his tail.
Cue 2 hours later and he pukes on the floor, has trouble walking, jumps up on my mate's bed, lies down and refuses to move for hours. He's used to puking becuase he's always rooting through bins and eating stuff he shouldn't be eating, so he didn't seem all too bothered.

He was fine the next day though :)

Lesson learned.

Good to hear she is doing okay! Nobody wants to go through a scare like that with a family member. When living back at home, I would be sure to keep all ABV in a screw top jar to prevent any spills if it were to tip over. My room was upstairs, so I'd be up there vaping and what not when suddenly my dog would poke her nose through the bedroom door then come in to explore. Luckily the family dog was straight edge and thoroughly disliked both the smell of bud and beer, that helped prevent any possible accidents.

Thanks for the info, I will now trash all abv immediately after use.

:uhoh:

but but but

if you just keep it stored properly theres no way a dog can open up a jar and then you can make brownies or hash later for free~

(unless you're really heavily vaping the herb til its dark brown/black, then you arent losing out on much)

Yeah, wrong answer. As SD says, store it for later use. Just store it in something secure.

My friend's dog got into a couple of his brownies and he said his dog started acting really weird and whining a lot. Definitely agree with the OP and say that edibles or ABV and pets aren't great combinations.

I wonder though.. a lot of t he time I'm vaping one of my cats loves coming up to me and meowing at me until I blow a cloud his way.. maybe he's just interested in the way it looks, who knows.

So if you really do want to give your pet ABV, start with no more than a few crumbs.
Why would you want to?
Given all the variables,i highly recommend just NOT giving your pets ABV at all.

I would say do NOT give your pet abv. Blow a vapor cloud if you think your pet likes getting high. Give them the chance, but allow them to walk into the cloud if it is what they want. I never suggest getting a pet high. Chances are very very high that they do not like it and don't want it.

Altering another being's psychological state without their consent is a heavy matter, particularly when we know not (in the least) what that psychological state is like for them or how it is received. Very sound advice above IMO. Good thread.

Sure it is a heavy matter, but it's MJ we're talking about here. I would venture to say pets run into more harmful pesticides/etc while outdoors in comparison THC vapor flowing in open air... if you're hotboxing your pets or feeding them ABV that is a completely different story, like others have said dosage is incredibly different..

^^THIS.

1st post on FC btw...I know it may seem funny to occasionally shotgun the dog with ur hands over the nose or watever people do even casually blowing smoke in their ears and wierd stuff ive heard like that...

but just like this guy above said, think about it for a second....i know there are dogs who are seemingly eager to partake, but i think people are misinterpreting the dogs constant desire to please the owner as the dog actually wanting to get high....and if there is even a slight chance that its not enjoyable for them well I think its wrong for us to even risk putting them through it.

Another thing to consider: I was at the vet the other day and while I was waiting I read an article in a dog magazine on MMJ and your pet. The vet they interviewed said that animals and humans experience pain differently. In humans much of pain is processed as an emotion, not just as a sensation. This has huge implications for why cannabis may help us but may hurt animals or at the very least be cruel in its administration. The vet in the article heavily recommend against medicating pets with cannabis.

I'd go one step further even and i would also personally recommend NOT blowing clouds at them. ;)

Exactly. Do with yourself what you wish, but don't ever impose a state of consciousness on anybody or thing.

When I was young and dumb, I used to share the smoke with pets. Thought it was funny.

However, I don't ever have the desire to now. In fact, it repulses me. I think looking into your pet's eyes, seeing that trust and love... that forcing intoxication on them, is cruel.

I normally wouldn't bump a thread this old but this is not a normal occasion.

Somehow my little puppy got in to some ABV. I have no idea how this happened as I have had all of my ABV in a mason jar and use other containers pretty much because of this thread. She has just been taken to the vet but I am beside myself. If she got into anything she only got crumbs but still she just wouldn't move or drink or anything. I thought I was being careful but I guess I was not careful enough.

Mason jar is what I use to store mine. And then I put it in a drawer.

Oh..... been here, done this! I'm so sorry. It's so scary. But, my little guy was fine after a grueling 8 hours or so (and some vomiting). I'd say he probably ingested a good joints worth and he weighed about 24 pounds at the time.

Hang in there and just help him when he needs to move around or go outside. No jumping until he's got his legs back. ;)

I'm hoping and assuming she is all better now? Scary stuff big time.

Our old cat only vet (now retired) told us a 'funny' story along these lines. His only dog case, a late night emergency 'for a friend of a friend' who turned out to be one of the Oakland Raiders (he wouldn't say which, of course). The dog got into the hash box and was in a bad way, but they wanted to avoid the cops.

Using fast action and educated guesses he saved the dog, a few hours later the owner, friend and now stable and improving dog slipped back into the night....leaving the pan of 'already be ate' hash and assorted nasty stuff. With a wink, the vet said 'it washed off just fine....'.

In a similar vein I recall reading about some researchers pulling a still sealed jar of hash from a galley wreck in the med. Seems it was common fare in battle, kept guys focused on rowing not on getting rammed? Anyway, the fun bit was 'despite 2000 years under water it still retained it's potency'. Field test, I assume?

Hash is pretty tough stuff, I guess. But best in the owner, not the pet.

I am not trying to down play this fear or encourage anything potentially dangerous but I am not sure if this is really as big of deal as we are making this out to be. I have fed my dog ABV before when he was sick. It appeared to help him about an hr after dosing him (50lb dog maybe .3 g) he started eating again after not eating for a almost a full day. Was fully better within 24 hrs in which I dosed him similarly another 2 times. I have also heard of using Rick simpson oil ( https://www.greenpassion.org/index.php?/topic/30904-healing-a-very-sick-dog/ ) on dogs, that's pretty pure hash oil through oral ingestion with good results. Also didn't all of our testing way back in the day that determined how harmless cannabis is, that they shot some German shepherd up with a ridiculously high dose and all he did was go to sleep?

The problem is that we have no idea how this drug truly affects the canine brain and since we can't ask "bud how did you like that" we can't find out. Add in the fact that dogs can vary greatly in size and we have a really hard time finding the sweet spot for dosing. All I know is that when my dog got in to a very small amount, she did not take well to it and was a lifeless lump for almost an entire day. May not have been harmful; but it certainly can't be healthy.
