I v tried for the first time to make butter with my abv.
I v used 15 gr of dark abv (vapor genie) plus 30 gr of butter and two glasses of water.
Actually some of the abv was kind of black...the Vapor genie is quite heavy on it -:))
I v let it boiling for more or less 4 hours at very slow pace , I v filtered , It is kind of green in colour, now it is in my freezer ...
Will update for result as soon as I ll get it out from the freezer.

cheers

I'm looking forward to your report. I recently started saving my ABV and have been researching various methods for making ABV butter. Never in my life have I tried edibles so I am embarking on some uncharted territory.

Edibles are great! Just remember to have a rough idea of your ratios, and when you start munching don't rush things. Start small and be patient. The last batch I used a mix of Abv and fresh herb as I was a bit short, and now I have fresh herb scones on the counter that are lovely and mellow for breakfast :)

When mixing ABV with butter, what is a good ratio to start with for a first-timer? I know there are many variables to consider, depending on strain, how cooked the ABV is, etc. I'm just looking for a starting point.

The butter is ready but before to give it a try I have a question :
after taking it out from the freezer the iced\butter is at the top and at the ice water at the bottom...actually the ice at the bottom is quite dark brown...what should I do ? keep only the butter and put the rest in the trash ? Not sure about what happen : is all the thc absorbed into the butter and there fore the rest is useless ? Or I should have been waiting till all water was vaporized and only at that point rinse it and put it in the freezer ? Not sure abt what to do now ....put it back in a pot and wait till all water is gone and again put in the freezer or just cut away the ice and keep the butter ?
Thanks in advance...

As you found out ABV can be very potent, approach with caution. A little bit at a time. I try something out towards evening, then if it's too potent I can just go to bed. It's hard to get the dosing down for me. I'm either too medicated or not enough.

I finally bought some Rick Simpson Oil at the dispensary and use it hidden in food at night a couple hours before bed. It's helping with evening pain and sleep.

You only want the solid block. The water gets poured down the drain. There is likely some sludge on the bottom of the butter - I scrape this off with a knife if not too thick, or heat it up once more and filtering again should have it clear and ready to go.

I just realized that You froze the butter and water. That's not required, but shouldn't hurt it. I usually just leave it in the fridge until the budder is solid. I use a container with sloped sides, and some light pressure on one side usually lifts one end of the block from the water.

Yes I have frozen whatever was remaining after boiling 4 hours. So Water and butter were still mixed together. Is there any specific handling to do in order to separate the butter from the water ? Now I have lifted the butter and it came off all at once from the water. Still the water (actually ice) is quite dark so my question is : is also the ice from the water full of THC or the THC all went in the butter ? Probably there is some chemical reaction which I m not aware of...shell I just boil it again and wait till all water is gone ?

No special handling - the water and butter will naturally separate. Just toss the water. There isn't any reason to freeze that I know of, but none of the active ingredients will be in the water - it's all just smelly goo.

If you do a gentle reheat and filter through a coffee filter (roll it up and squeeze hard to get the liquid out, but don't burn your fingers). Then I pour the budder into a flat tray and let cool in the fridge, then cut it into useable chunks and store in ziplock in the freezer (usually 1/2 cup portions are good for recipes), then you can just use this budder in any recipe, simply substitute budder for butter.

The same recipe works for coconut oil. Oil and water don't mix, and none of the goodness is in the water.

Enjoy :)

Thanks Killick, this is helpful ! I ll give it a try asap and report here...let's see if the heavily toasted vapor genie ABV has still some active medicine inside ! I must say that the taste of the budder so far is not really inviting...probably while using it I ll have to mask it somehow with some other ingredient with a stronger personality ...

Next time try it without the water, just herb and butter/oil in a double boiler. :)

Chocolate pairs well with ABV flavor in my kitchen, my edibles are not merely tolerable but actually delicious.

But if you are after strong THC effect then try using green herb not ABV.

With pure herb would be quite costly here ! I would love it but it is above my budget...
Only butter without water? ...but how much butter u need in order to have 15 gr of ABV submerged into it? Why the double boiler ? Sorry for my stupid questions but abv butter is a totally new subject for me and I would like to learn the job well !

I use water in the slow cooker just for volume. A smaller volume of butter may get too hot and boil instead of simmer, so adding water will keep our from boiling.

The double boiler method means you can't boil your butter, so no water required.

@puddleglum - sharesies on the delicious recipes? I have some that turn out OK, but always on the lookout for more!

A double boiler accomplishes the same thing as your water method: control the temperature so you don't burn the material and ruin the batch. Both methods have their pros and I am not necessarily saying my way is better. I have however noticed that THC crystals sink (not float) in water.

By the way, you don't necessarily need to purchase a special double boiler; you can improvise one from a bowl and a pot.

As far as how much oil to use, the simple answer is, however much you need for the recipe. For my tolerance, 15g would make 3 trays of brownies, so I'd use 1.5 cups of oil (1/2 cup per batch). If your tolerance is different than mine please adjust accordingly.

Edibles are the most cost effective delivery system in my opinion. (However different people have varying levels of sensitivity.)

Embarrassed to say I mostly use packaged brownie mix. King Arthur is my current favorite.

hmmm...so according to you the THC crystals can be found also in the frozen water if you mix water and butter ?

I prefer the ABV+water+butter in a crockpot method, the water helps soak up all those weird flavours/chlorophyll/non-active components

"Trichomes" is the name for those THC crystal glands. Frankly I doubt dark brown ABV has many intact trichomes. For green bud with intact trichomes, it might be a bigger concern.

I personally avoid the water method these days. In the past when I used this method I always discarded the water.

@puddleglum i started with those, but needed to find a lower sugar option, so started making cookies and stuff with stevia and coconut sugar instead. Also a batch of cheddar scones, which were way too big. Next time will try keep the sizes manageable...

yes probably you are right...I would like to consume my medicine only trough food. The problem is that I m still a beginner in the edible field and before trying with the fresh material I want to learn a secure method so that I ll not loose a costly batch in case I fail ....

The zero-sugar option is just to fill some capsules (see my avatar).

Oddly enough, while picking up some soy lecithin, I found a bag of empty capsules at the market. I remember reading that some people use coconut med oil to fill caps. Now I'm trying to figure out how they do that. Or is it simply a matter of scooping Abv directly into the cap?
