Replacing batteries on some built in units is possible, for example a Mighty or Crafty. On others it may not be very worthwhile as it might cause damage or if the unit is cheap enough it may just be considered disposable. I have no idea if the mgear4 vaporizer you mention is worth fixing or...

This is perfectly normal in my experience. I do believe that it's oils from one's fingers (on the cap) that are burning off. When heating with an IH, the temperature ramps up slowly enough that the oils smoke off as they burn. With a torch though, the oils get vaporized pretty much...
