From what I've heard, IR thermometers give unreliable readings on nails at dabbing temperatures. You want a thermometer with a K-Type thermocouple (rated for the appropriate temp range).

I find that it mostly depends on the rig. I have one that likes it more restricted, another with free air flow. For my prime driver I like the StormCell with two holes open.
