I think what's happened is the circuits are tested when the units are open, nothing is tested with batteries it's just wires and voltage testing. Shouldn't happen no, the QA should have been tighter. :(

I've had 2 units, both perform identically and had no smell at all. You've had one unit and found this, does that mean it's common and we are the lucky ones to not have had the issue ? Maybe ask for a replacement.
