not really because if you swapped the tip out for a pen tip then the actual tip will have to be kept somewhere, chances of losing it are a lot higher than taking the tip off just to lead it

I don't really know much about the batteries and all that but I would say why risk it to save a few $? like you said, they aren't all that expensive and it comes with 2, so get an extra set and you're fine... if you need more than 4 batteries to where you can't keep at least 1 charged at all...

The Solo or Air are great options for your needs, I would also look into the Haze. Very portable, rechargeable batteries which you can carry extra on trips and has a ton of different options for its use.
