this is the exact reason why i usually dont let people hit my LB native, they slobber their nasty lips all over my precious box! i always make sure my lips are very dry when hitting my launchbox, and thus do not have to deal with residual buildup from saliva. i definitely prefer using it...

is the 17-85mm f2.8 an older lens? i too am a canon user and have never heard of that lens before, but the focal length and f-stop speed sound prime! i also need to get an extension tube, the macro lens i use is only a macro because the adapter spaces it out too far to focus properly to...

i wouldn't worry about melting the acrylic, it is quite resilient and torched trenches usually will extinguish themselves shortly due to the lack of oxygen. (keep your lid closed if it flames up! i made the mistake of opening it once and it burned for a lot longer than it should have)

sometimes fresh fruits and vegetables are my favorite things to much on! coincidentally i am eating some pretty juicy cantaloupe at the moment which is quite good

who needs healthy eating when you have a ridiculously fast metabolism :P no but really, i participate in a decent amount of physical activity everyday due to my job and my hobbies, so the more calories, the better :D
