Not really the right thread - but i always thought the rings in a coil could not touch - guess i was wrong? I guess a big spoil of coil wire is not that expensive. If you had to make coils regularly would it really be that bad? Never made one so i dont really know. Buying the official ones...

My splinter got very hot once. It was down to me packing too much in the stem so the air flow was restricted. I dont think TC is much to worry about. In theory TC should limit high temps obtainable it wattage mode.
