Yep, he's right, a short will kill a transformer. If you don't have a meter there is a low tech way to check for a short. The car cord has an LED and fuse. Plug the car cord in and check for the LED. Next plug the PD in. If it's a short you will blow the car cord fuse and the LED will go off...
