Can't a hole be drilled into a glass stem with a proper carbide-tipped glass-cutting bit? There are all sorts of tutorial videos showing this. It would be nice to flame-polish a hole after drilling, but I don't know how the heat would affect the overall tempering/annealing of the glass piece...
