Yup, if you go back to proto-TA times, this is basically the original technique most of us used 👍🏽 and I still use it. I've tried using smaller lighters and not been able to get it to the same level of consistency as with a big flame.

Enano XL 😂 But it doesn't have temp-based control but a dial 1-10 but it's extremely sensitive and consistent, so you can get exactly the roast you would like with great power. I've never managed to overwhelm the heater and I've tried 😁

Nothing AFAIK, it's a shame as I love my lotus on the black stem. You might be able to pick one up second-hand though. @Vitolo +1 on using Newport gas, definitely the best IMO.

I had one of their torch ones and really liked it, then lost it and bought another and it stopped working not long after buying it and the company never replied to emails. Maybe I got unlucky or maybe they have a quality control issue, I'm not sure.
