My 2nd generation top cap arrived this morning. I was excited to finally be able to use my Alternate after two months, but with all these reports of cracking CUs I don't really know what to think... I'll probably end up doing the Crafty mod anyway. Disappointing though.

Check the bottom of the cap (the part that sits above the oven). If there's a metal ring, it's the new one. You can take a look at pics posted in this very thread or on Reddit; also @ohmygodimsohigh did a comparison on YT which clearly shows the differences.

Really? I usually heat it as soon as I hear the cool click, and it's ready to go in 5/6 seconds. I think - still new to this but it seems this way - that the sessions that give me the most clouds are the ones where I reheat the cap for the second or third time in a row. Where did you read this?

I'm pretty sure, for what I've read here and on Reddit about people who were in contact with Vivant, that the new CUs are not ready yet. This means that both your cooling units were "old" ones, while the real new CUs (that I believe @ohmygodimsohigh tested) don't seem to have that problem...
