Sorry for the long delay in updating, the wire idea was a bad one, even the thinnest wire i found was too thick to allow the heater cover back on. So, I bent and bent and bent that shim over and over until I seemed to get a straighter fit. Even doing so, it still didnt feel as solid as I would...

Waddya think about maybe wrapping the element cover with a layer of some thin steel wire and them placing the shim over that? Hopefully that should thicken it enough to make the cover fit nice and snug. Hmmmm
