I get some black specks in mine and have a few green specks too. On the whole the majority of the ABV is a dark brown colour. If the black specks are indeed combusted material, is that such a bad thing? There isnt much of it.

From the description it seems to do everything you would want it to do. Personally I have a La Crosse Technology BC-900 which I would highly recommend. I cant say if the AT-1268 is as good or not, but from the description it seems to do everything the BC-900 does.
